Senate Enabling Executive Recklessness With Ndume’s Removal As Chief Whip- Atiku by BeeBeeOoh(m): 5:51am On Jul 19
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says the national assembly is becoming an “enabler of executive recklessness”.

In a post on X on Thursday, Abubakar condemned the removal of Ali Ndume, senator representing Borno south, as the chief whip of the senate.

On Wednesday, Tahir Monguno, senator representing Borno north, took Ndume’s position following a request by Abdullahi Ganduje, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Ajibola Basiru, national secretary of the party.

Ndume has been critical of the government over the state of the nation with his recent claim that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is populated by kleptocrats.

Reacting to Ndume’s removal as the senate chief whip, the former vice-president alleged the Tinubu-led administration is clamping down on people speaking truth to power.

“In the evolution of systems of government, a major concern for thinkers was a governmental framework that will reduce the highhandedness of the executive arm of government,” he wrote.

“It was thought, and rightly so too, that a participatory approach to governance, such that will make the government derive its legitimacy from the people will better serve the interest of the masses.

"And thus, to make sure that the executive does not go overboard in the application of its powers, the legislative arm of government was conceived as a means of protecting the people from the authoritarian tendencies of wielders of state powers.

“Regrettably, however, the democracy in Nigeria in the current administration of President Bola Tinubu has become an anathema to that general principle of democracy as providing primary protection for the people against executive excesses.

“This ugly tendency is being manifested by the steady posturing of our National Assembly, especially the Senate, of taking a reverse course in its core function and becoming a puppet in the hands of the President.

“It is uncharitable that whenever members of the Senate stand on the floor of the red chamber to perform their statutory duty of calling the executive to order, they are immediately reprimanded for so doing.

"When Senator Abdul Ningi called attention of the country to the incident of budget padding in the 2024 Appropriation bill, rather than calling for a thorough investigation into the observation, the reaction of the Senate was to hand him a suspension.

“Today, the people of Nigeria are victims of ambiguous budget framework upon which appropriations for the current fiscal year are hinged in the face of a multiplicity of appropriations.

“Only yesterday, Senator Ali Ndume called for the President to wake up to his responsibilities and provide succour to address the biting hunger and poverty in the country. Ironically, the response of the senate to his patriotic warning is to relieve him of his principal office as the Chief Whip of the Senate.

“Also, despite persistent solicitations that government put its priorities on cancelling the excruciating hardship in the land and suspend the idea of spending scarce resources on the purchase of new aircraft for the presidential fleet, the Senate took a stand against the people and ignored the voices of altruism by decorating the President with controversial purchases of an aircraft and a yacht amidst the worst material conditions of the average citizen in the history of our country.

“We are, therefore, beginning to see a pattern in which the National Assembly has become an enabler of executive recklessness, and the concerns of the people stand in the nadir of priority list of the legislature. This emerging reality must stop.”

Abubakar said the nation’s democracy is being “compromised” by an “unholy alliance” between the executive and the legislature and “portends a dictatorship that will worsen a lot of the people”.

One of the demands of citizens is that the Senate has to be scrapped. It is useless!

Only the house of representatives will be spared and they must be on civil service salary structure

I disagree with Atiku. The position of Senate chief whip is the APC's decision and at any time, the APC can decide who they want as chief whip.

Many do not know that the term Chief Whip simply means Majority Chief Whip. Ndume holds the position on the request of the party and it isn't an elective one.

APC can wake up tomorrow and ask for the Senate leader to be removed, it is their right and choice. So if the party feels the person occupying that position is demarketing the party, they can choose another person.

In as much as we know that the party has the sole right to remove him as the chief whip does that mean that any one or member of the party must be silent when things are going wrong in the Nation? Is that your view on politics ? No na, you have the right to criticize your leader when things aren’t going right. That is what democracy is about (freedom), what the President ought to do it make adjustments and listen to criticism and not bring down the hammer on such a person. If tomorrow Akpabio is affected by such poor governance and he “mistakenly” criticizes the Executive that means he will be impeached na, and some people will say yey!! It’s party issue.

Fact is that such control over the legislature by the executive is bad for our democracy, it is horrible. They are both different arms of government that function independently, non is greater than the other and non should be more powerful than the other, infact categorically looking at it, the Legislature wields more power than the executive, but they have abused this power. I hope we get it right some day.

PDP didn't appoint him as chief whip.

The party that appointed him can discipline him anyday anytime.

Alhaji Siddiq, when you become President you should reappoint him as the chamber's chief whip.

It all started from you papa.
Your manipulation of the Senate by the executive started from you when you were the vice president.
In other not to say that it is a good development, I will say that this Senate was constituted by the intervention of the executive which makes it fraudulent. So acts like this is expected until a greater percentage of the Senate members frees themselves from executive control and there is no stooge to use to replace lawmakers that liberate themselves from executive control. But this can never happen in our country.

My dear friend it goes beyond what you have written, in as much as we want to sound politically correct let’s also be mindful of the fact that whatever happens up there has an indirect effect on the masses. It is wrong for the executive to always call the shot for the legislature, they are both different arms of government with their own powers, and therefore should act independently of each other. But sadly the legislature has become a slave to the Executive, doing whatsoever the executive so pleases, remove or punish anyone the executive chooses to punish, haba it makes no sense na. When the Executive is going out to line it is the duty of the Legislature to checkmate them and put them in line. Remember how on their toes the Executive was when Saraki was in power ? You don’t approve every request that comes to your table until due diligence has been done to it. The Legislature under Ahmed Lawan and Akpabio have just been an annex of the executive which isn’t healthy for our democracy.

Atiku, Ali Ndume could not control himself. His outburst was more of an ego thing than altruism. He was not removed from the senate; he was removed as a leader in the senate as he had no maturity for that position.

This was what we expected from you when you were asked to ask Iyorchia Ayu to resign when he could not control himself and publicly proved he was a biased party chairman. Had you won, you'd have given him a bigger position like SGF, but were you thinking far and deep?

Flashback: How Bola Tinubu spoke highly of Buhari in 2015, named PDP ‘Poverty Development Party

National leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu had during the presidential campaign in 2015, referred to President Muhammadu Buhari as the only solution for the security and economic challenges facing Nigeria.

During a mega presidential rally, the former governor of Lagos State recalled how some powerful nations in the world returned to army generals when they were challenged, saying “Major General Buhari would revive Nigeria’s economy”.

He named the current opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP as the “Poverty Development Party saying they had nothing to offer.

His words at the time were; “Every nation has a period of their own challenges, when America was challenged, they turned to one great man, their ex-military general, General Eisenhower. When the French were challenged, they turned to their general, Charles de Gaulle.

“When Britain was challenged, they turned to their general. Today, Nigeria is economically and physically challenged so we turn to General Muhammadu Buhari. He is the right man for the job. If you talk about military experience, he has it abundantly, he has courage, simplicity, he has it abundantly.

“If you talk about great determination, a combination of vision and ability to perform, honesty and integrity, he has it abundantly.

“I laugh when the incapable government, ‘Poverty Development Party’ PDP were talking. They have nothing again to say, they now want to question the qualifications of General Buhari and look for his certificate”.

Following the manifestos in 2015 which projected the APC presidential candidate as a ‘saviour’, Buhari defeated the then incumbent president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan with Nigerians expecting a total change in security and economy.
