One thing people don't realize is that the statue in Catholic church is not being worshipped. It's only a representation of God or a reminder of his presence. That's all wink

Michael547:

Ok....can images be used alongside worship of God? For example, praying through an image to God.

Why not? We can see God through the eyes of his created things. Psalm 19 says, and I quote:

ā€Psalms 19:1-6 NIVā€¬
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth"

So if I put a beautiful painting of a green scenery in my room, I look at it and marvel at wonders of God, it spurns me to worship him. When we were children, our parents have this beautiful picture of Jesus in the house, even when they were not around, we look at the picture and believe that Jesus is there watching us. That alone prevented us from doing nasty things around the house.

My question is a prelude to answering your question. If you I go ahead to answer your question you already affirmed positive to my question, which is you already agreed God permits the making of an image?

God told Moses to make a snake for them that were bitten so that they can be healed.

He didn't say they should worship it.

That's why he said that if they look at it they will be healed.

He didn't say they should pray to it

So first, you agree that God did not exclusively forbade making of imagery, good. Next, no one has ever told you that God said people should worship image, if you arrive at that conclusion, it was taken from your preconceived idea. The priest in question didn't say people should worship images, he said presence of images can spurn people to piety.
Finally, the image of snake itself is an imagery of Christ who would hang on the cross. To Israelites, it was a mere imagery of snake but to a knowledgeable Christian it was more than a snake. Christ said Just as Moses lifted up a snake in the desert, so shall the son of man be lifted. He further said that when I am lifted up, I will draw up all men unto me.
Old testament has no meaning in itself, they are imagery of things to be fulfilled in Christ in the new testament. The scripture is Christo-centric. From the Genesis when God called out the light to the end of Revelation, we see Christ revealed as the way to salvation. So when images are properly utilised, they can draw you to the truth about God. No one I repeat tells you to worship images, but images can help you draw close to God. I leave you with quotes from Psalm 19:

ā€Psalms 19:1-6 NIVā€¬
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. You're not vast with history dude. Mention one Islamic scholar that won a Nobel prize in physics or medicine. Or mention one innovation by the Islamic world. The age of enlightenment came when the catholic started building cathedrals and founding of universities. U know nothing
Now you show your deep ignorance. The first Nobel prize was won in 1901. This was hundreds of years after the great catholic and Islamic dynasties.
The Islamic technology dominated the best of the Catholic world.
So using the Nobel prize as an argument is super odd because the Noble came much after both religions have waned in both political and scientific influence.
Did the Catholic church add anything to civilization? Yes they did and so did every other major group. So saying that the catholics brought about technology is only laughable.
Yes the first university was catholic but even before the Catholics built cathedrals, the ancient Egyptians were building pyramids to their gods.
Every major religion added or improved architecture and education.
Below is the Arabic contribution to mathematics please mention the Catholic contribution to the field if you can.
algebra, number theory and number systems. They also made considerable contributions to geometry, trigonometry and mathematical astronomy.
You need to get it out of your head that Catholics brought about technology.
Technology as we know and define it today took off in the early 20th century much after the greatest catholic period.
It was fueled by a very diverse group. Jews, protestants, Catholic, and even atheist all took part in the movement. Its roots are not in the Catholic church or any religion in particular.

'The priest in question didn't say people should worship images, he said presence of images can spurn people to piety.'

This is a very dangerous line of thought o.
What stupid piety is that thru images?

It's just like people who make certain places or grounds their prayer ground as if God resides there. When Jesus explicitly said in john;:

Woman,ā€ Jesus replied, ā€œbelieve me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

God does not need to have sympathy thru an image.

Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
No one comes to the father except through Jesus.

Not thru images or sculptures or Mary but thru Christ.

Ur trying to twist things to suit ur conscience but the Bible is key.

Perhaps you will scrutinize more the meaning of worship.

Can any of those idols be used without first blessing it and sprinkling holy water on it?

After which the owner will now attach more importance to it.

That's where Satan did the abracadabra and deceive you to be devoting your precious time to rubbers, woods, stones and metals.

That's idolatry.

@ topic: Father there is no explanation you can give to cover the idolatry of bowing down before images which Catholics are known for.
The command is already there in the Bible. There is no white or black interpretation to this. DON'T BOW DOWN BEFORE IMAGES OF ANY KIND IN WHATEVER GUISE YOU WANT TO PRESENT IT.

The LORD said to Moses, "Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live."

But as the priest explained, if God said we shouldn't make images at all, why did he command Moses to make the image of a snake or cherubs? Can you answer? Moreover, you heard him stress that the images are not meant to be worship, so why are you talking about worshiping it?

Every catholic priest will misquote the bible to defend their faith.

Where did Jesus christ told us to pray to Mary? All through the book of acts of apostles, no apostle was praying to Mary.

You didn't say anything about images again because his explanation was biblical. Now it's about praying to whoever. When he explains that one too to you you would be silence about it again and look for another childish accusation against Catholic. Catholic pass you guys.

Thou shall not make an image, though shall not worship the image made. Two instructions in one. If you have been forbidden from making images, and no image exists to worship, why the second part of the instruction? Thought provoking, I never even saw it this way until now. Moses indeed according to the scripture made images - first the snake, second the cherub on the ark of the covenant. Maybe even the entire ark is an image carried around to represent presence of God among the Israelites. In it you even have Aron's budded staff. And did Israelite not even bow and worship before the ark?
The Priest made sense die. Only those who have their mind fixed and invulnerable to reasoning won't try to see his logic. God can't contradict himself and scripture can't equally contradict itself.

Ask yourself .... Catholics do bow/worship the carved images of Mary ... Jesus etc. Two part instruction.... don't make them .... don't bow to /worship them. If it were only the first part instruction ... don't make them .... then you as a Catholic would be free to bow down to the statue because you didn't make them. Hope you see the logic in the second part.
