She is born of a Jamaican dad and Indian mother who immigrated to the US. There is no pure African American if that is what you are thinking. Every African American is or is a descendent of someone who immigrated here or was forced here from another country.

As to the identity, a person of mixed ancestry can choose which one to identify with or both. It's simple. She can choose to identify with the culture of her Jamaican, Indian or because she was raised in American as an African American or all three. Her choice. Her joining a black sorority says it all.
