Africa’s Richest Man Versus Nigerian Government Is Uncharted Territory by Racoon(m): 4:42pm On Jul 26
A standoff is building between Africa’s richest man and the president of the continent’s most populous economthat stung by accusations from his home nation’s government that he’s seeking a monopoly for his $20 billion oil refinery, Aliko Dangote said he’s dropped plans to build a huge steel mill in the country for fear of similar allegations.

At stake is the health of an economy that’s struggled to attract investment, and the fate of Dangote’s refinery, the continent’s biggest, is in the balance. Without it, Nigeria — Africa’s largest crude-oil producer — will need to import almost all of its motor fuel.

Nigeria’s downstream regulator has said Dangote is seeking a ban on diesel imports to boost the viability of the plant and questioned the quality of its fuel. That follows the billionaire saying the state oil company has reneged on a deal to supply it with 300,000 barrels of crude a day.

“Building a refinery like this is supposed to be a pride for everybody,” the billionaire said, accusing the regulator of wanting to continue issuing import licenses for fuel (a lucrative source of income for Nigeria’s elite for decades) instead of allowing his refinery to thrive.

For Dangote, whose business empire was allowed to flourish under previous administrations in return for him investing billions of dollars, the dispute is a shock.

“Access and favors matter. And Dangote in cement was always accused of benefiting from a monopoly,” said Antony Goldman, founder of Promedia Consulting, a political risk-advisory firm.

“Some critics say they fear a monopoly but omit to mention a status quo that relies on imports, importers and intermediaries.”There’s unlikely to be a winner in this clash of titans, and ordinary Nigerians will also pay a hefty price.

It be like we don get emergency lovers of everything for Nigeria oo

Between Dangote and FG, who should Nigerians be supporting? Dangote is not the only business man in Nigeria to have been granted some unnecessary waivers. Those must be rectified.

Since those policies have been favouring him, we didn't hear peem

Yes south west is safe for investment.
Whatever is happening is just business challenges even in the first world countries it happens.

There is nothing bad if the government exemplify Dangote from certain taxes so that the business can benefit Nigeria.
Do you know how many people is directly and indirectly employed by Dangote in Nigeria?

This is a case of petroleum marketers Vs dangote

The MD of NNPC has refinery in Malta hence he wants to frustrate locally made petrol.

I used to think that Dangote can’t talk. This Drug baron’s Koboko go reach everyone. For your Info Dangote is one of the beneficiaries of this corrupt system. Do you think that he will be crying if Buhari and Emefiele were in power now?

This is really bad for Nigeria and the economy.

Things might get so worse for Nigeria if Tinubu does not take decisive actions to calm things down.

No matter the accusation against Dangote, it is still far far better than reallying on foreign products and foreigners.

I really feel bad for Dangote, I really do but when he was enjoying during OBJ, GEJ and Buhari regime.. he was smiling while others were crying..

Just like they say, it is turn by turn..

I remember when Obj withdrew Ibeto cement license and dangote cement rose in popularity because Ibeto covered most of the SE, SS and some SW and these are the region with the most new construction.. so , somehow ibeto was squeezed out of the game..

During ObJ tenure, once Dangote sugar refinery was almost complete.. obasanjo banned importation of sugar.. then later ban this and that because it was alleged dangote was involved in those business enterprises...

As far as I'm concerned, the only effective protest that can work in Nigeria is one which is organized and scheduled during an election year and carried out during elections.

If our leaders know we await them during the polling period they will be careful about their actions during the years preceding elections.

You cannot be docile, senseless, greedy or tribalistic during elections and expect not to reap the rewards.

Please let us reap the rewards of our collective idiocy in peace and wait for the next election and see if we have àctually learnt our lessons.

Basic problem is, the government does not want to remove subsidy.

If Dangote refinery comes on line, it means that fuel would be sold at a high price of over N1000 for it to work well. The government knows that, hence the delay tactics.

Also, those who benefit from the importation of refined products and the subsidy money would lose out. The winners would be Dangote and other domestic refineries that are coming up.

The truth is, most Nigerians prefer cheap fuel, most of the elite prefer the subsidy mechansim and imports to continue. Their interests coincide. The result is that we never ever get to domestic refining.

All because of cheap fuel.

Dangote is just a government stooge tool to impoverish so many Nigerian Masses.

nairalanda1:

If you charged me N20000 for a job you did for me, and I paid you N5000 and told you that you have to forgive the rest because i am a poor man, you won't have much of a business left, eh, Wittyness?

If you did that for all your customers, you would be broke.

Demanding cheap fuel is why we are where we are. Calling people who want to sell that fuel at the approrpiate market price government stooges is why we are where we are.

Maybe i should call you a government stooge for demanding your full pay.

Learn to read for comprehension rather than comment.
Try reread to get my point.
nairalanda1:

I understand you guys. You are socialists at heart.

You want things to be cheap and cheap as can be..from food to housing to all other stuff.

I get you. But the sad thing is that it is impossible. A lot of countries tried what you want, and they ended up being impoverished eventually because the debts got too much.

Plus, is BUA, Lafarge and IBETO government stooge too? Are the many companies that have refineries coming up government stooge?

(Plus yes, government has helped dangote....because it is in the interest of government to do so. If they had not, dangote would have been an importer and all the jobs his industries create would have been non-existent)

You hate capitalism. Nothing wrong with that. But at the end, people have got to be paid...and that is why we cannot have cement at N400 as you want it now.

And yes, you can say I don't comprehend you. I do, very well. You don't know it.
You don't comprehend....my point isn't about cheap or expensive.

Wittyness.

So, many of you still believe in BAT with his empty promises? Lol! That was how Nigerians were deceived before that Buhari should be given enough time that things will come around. As if the mass looting in his era was not enough, the idiat took loans with our oil reserves. That's the same psychology BAT is using currently. After one year plus in office, Nigerians should give you more time to do what exactly sad!?

For the richest man in Africa to be affected, then you should have seen the end from the beginning...

It is Dangote vs Asiwaju and his nephews!

Dangote ground is clear, if you build refinery in Nigeria, sell to Nigerians but you can not be controlling Policies in Nigeria and also have a refinery or blending plants in Europe!

Wallahi..... Asiwaju is going in 2027..... I trust Dangote and he brothers tondo the needful. That's if Asiwaju Govt reach 2027 Sha ..
