The rice biz he brought up shows how much he is detached from the reality in Nigeria...

No bizman will give a relatively unknow person his product for 3 days without collateral or otherwise here in Nigeria..

In as much as he meant well, but the proposed rice was too good to be true .

I think he was awashed by the person just to paint the wailing Nigerians liars.....

Even the biggest Tinubu supporters in Nigeria cannot make such bold claim. The guy took sycophancy to the next level.

Where are the regular government schools?

I served in the North and i taught Mathematics.

SS1 was from A to K, i think.. Only me be Maths teacher, and the students were not Almajiri oh.

I'm surprised you are downplaying the effect of schools in a region that had little or no presence of it.

Maybe it was to siphon funds or for politics, but if the school did run, it would have contributed to their literacy

My dad started school at 14 (I think) ,after his grandfather died. His grandfather wanted nothing to do with westerm education. So my grandfather had to wait for his father to pass away before putting his children in school. This is way back in the 50s/60s.and this was in ilorin.

The core north mentality has not changed much in this regard. If they want western education they will push for it.

This is about the serenity prayer. There is nothing I, you or anyone else can do if the northern leadership do not decide by themselves that they want emancipation for thier people.

Read what Amoto94 wrote. All gej did was throw school buildings at a cultural problem. Bill gates has also spent billions on polio vaccines but the north is still one of the world's last polio reservoirs.

If no leaders are ready to teach that western education of any form is a gateway to a better life. And that a better life is desirable (since as Muslims we are taught that this world is a trial and a short test for a much longer hereafter) then any investment in western education for the northern masses is dead on arrival

Especially in a place that celebrates Islam as a way of life and all that.

Oando sold it's downstream holding to vitol and helios.

This became ovhem. But they retained the oando brand.

Two years ago vitol and helios sold ovhem to nnpc (that's another long story).

So unipetrol to oando to oando marketing to ovhem to nnpc.

The circle is complete and unipetrol is back to being a govt company.

Why do u think Jonathan's government decided to formalize the almajari system of education in the first place? Hope u know prior Jonathan's attempt at formalizing the almajari system, there are millions of northern kids who ourightly shunned western education due to their beliefs/culture?

Jonthan was only looking at a situation where those kids are not completely ostracized from the rest of the society with no skill or knowledge whatsoever, thereby becoming ready-made reccuits for terrorists and fundamentalists. At least let the number of vulnerable kids be out of reach of boko haram and the likes.

You can't claim there was no arrangement beyond building of school structures. The same thing that happens where there's a change of government happened with the Almajari system; Jonathan lost the election and the new sheriff in town was not interested in continuing his initiative and the ends.

The crazy thing about all of this is that even if as a southerner u chose not to concern urself with what is happening in the north, u will feel it when there's scarcity of and hike in the prices of food commodity.

Those that served in the North knows you can get assaulted by a child's parents for not allowing their children leave the class once it's time to farm and they come at random.

The culture there has illiteracy as its foundation and this makes most northerners socially awkward to those from the south.

I need someone living in Austin, TX, that can help me receive this product from the manufacturer and ship it to Nigeria via GIG logistics station in Texas.

I had ordered it with GIGL address but it was returned stating they only ship to a residential address.

I'd be glad for anyone that can help.

The reality of northern workers is actually clear from the demographics of okada riders, security men and Labour on constitution sites.

The best most of them are trained in is farming. Which is why even as security they are nomadic. They will always travel to go to their farms up north at inopportune moments.

Despite free education in state government owned schools, most of the classes are always empty. Some of the governors used school feeding as the game changer to entice those kids to come to school.

But that is exactly what gej did. He attacked a cultural problem with a construction solution. Same mentality of governors building airports that no one will use.

The fuedal and poor northerners who listen first and foremost to the Islamic clerics have been taught that anything western is haram. Unless the clerics change the messaging this will remain. But the clerics will not change the messaging because the almaji give them power. Impoverished, uneducated easily manipulated.

An ulama says vote for Mr a and they dobut without blinking. Attack that house. They do it without thinking. Western education will take that power away from the. Everyone in the system prefers the status quo including the leaders as it means they have an easy way of controlling the impoverished masses

So any educational system that will emancipate and give free will to the millions of almajiris is dead on arrival. More so when it is a kafirun system.

Also less northerners going to school means more opportunities for the small educated class. That is how you have clowns like that guy who produced that rubbish Nigerian Twitter app as thought leaders. Or waspaping.

I understand your point now and you are correct.

So the two or three people listed in the article BlueRayDick posted are worth 15b investment?

Na so you dey run business

Should we also say that if one pump worked in the refineries after billions in TAM, small success is better than no success at all?

You are just capping agenda right now. You a business owner will throw big funds at a problem for 'small success'?

I have actually in the recent past advised people on this. Some dude wanted to demolish and rebuild a shopping mall. The argument was the mall was the only mall in a choice area in Abuja. I asked if they had actually crunched the numbers. It was not my business, but I asked. I have not heard from them since. But now they are renovating rather than demolish and rebuild.

Dey cap small success is better than no success on 15billion investment. Then also cap about Nigeria being broke.

We'd never know the level of success the initiative would have achieved because it was frustrated, abandoned and ultimately amounted to nothing.

Bill Gates has been investing in polio vaccination for as long as I can remember, I'm sure the success they achieved in the first couple of years can't be compared to the success the program has enjoyed decades later. You keep pointing at the cultural problem the North has, the alternative can't be complete abandonment until they all come around and say we love western education or love vaccines.

The way Bill Gates would measure success in Microsoft would be very different from the way he'd measure success in his NGO initiatives, two very different things.

Those clerics are the people. U can't separate a core northerner from his religion & culture. Some of these things go deeper than somebody just saying " Jonathan used the Almajari school system to enrich himself and his cronies"

Yes Jonathan the president failed and was shown the way out. But u should also be aware that Buhari a core northerner ruled for 8 years and nothing changed; in fact things got even worse. Why ? Because whether u call it backwater solutions or frontwater solutions, those clerics are the voice of the people. They are part and parcel of the people.

It was way back in SS1 studying Government as a subject I had long realized that the religion and culture thing is what the typical northerner holds dear. You will rarely see the people go against the opinion of their leaders. And that's one of the real reasons why the British's indirect rule was a huge success. The people listen to their traditional-cum-religious leaders whcih makes it easier for the colonial masters to have them on chokehold

You are missing the point. Bill gates is one of the world's richest men - he has achieved most of what he set out to achieve. He can afford to waste billions trying to solve a problem. A country like Nigeria should be doing proper cost benefit analysis before investing in significant amounts of cash into problems.

We can all agree the money gej spent was a a complete waste, whatever his intentions may have been

You saying Bill Gates can afford to waste money, makes it sound like he doesn't have tons of professionals in his employ managing these projects and setting metrics for success. Determinants for success in certain certain projects depends on the nature of the project. For example parameters for success in a back to school initiative in Southern Nigeria would differ greatly from Northern Nigeria, but investments would need be made either way and success measured by impact over time and on case by case basis.

Yea, while we can agree that the project failed, it's also important we consider why it failed and not just say it failed because Jonathan was a stupid man that wanted to waste money.

This is where leadership matters.

Jonathan will not leave his house 9 years after leaving government and be using his personal money (or stolen money) to be funding Almajiri school. His successors may not be interested in continuing on that path, but the governors, senators HoR members, etc have a huge role to play.

These elites know allowing the children to keep roaming the streets is a threat to public peace(maybe not now, but later in the future). The future is here now and everyone is acting all surprised.

How many of those elites has openly criticized giving birth to several children? Some of those elites have 4 wives. How will they tell the poor man he can't have 4 as well? That's where the problem is

The key thing about Almajiri schools why it was a waste of time is that unless the people buy into the idea and change the cultural mindset, they will find it insulting and reject it. How many times have you seen Northern elders defend Almajiri system as their culture and religious way of life

Ordinary telling people to give birth to kids they can cater for is a sensitive topic as they will tell you God takes care of children. To even get people to take polio vaccine its war. There was a time Northern Nigeria was the only place polio was thriving and I was at the forefront cos I was involved in a UNICEF project to vaccinate people. Take vaccine to protct your child should be the easiest thing to get people onboard with yet it was an issue

A people who started a terror organzation and named it "Western Education is a sin" those are the ones you built Almajiri schools for? Dey play my people

Until the North decides to change many things we are just wasting our time
