Those that served in the North knows you can get assaulted by a child's parents for not allowing their children leave the class once it's time to farm and they come at random.

The culture there has illiteracy as its foundation and this makes most northerners socially awkward to those from the south.

If you are employed to teach in any of those Almajiri schools which the society hates, you are just playing with your life

The narrative will simply be you are taking kids away from where they are learning from Ulamas about the religion and way of God to be teaching them pagan Western things

Bill Gates is spending billions on polio vaccine and its wasting away, yet you are proposing what will now be termed anti culture/religion

The key thing about Almajiri schools why it was a waste of time is that unless the people buy into the idea and change the cultural mindset, they will find it insulting and reject it. How many times have you seen Northern elders defend Almajiri system as their culture and religious way of life

Ordinary telling people to give birth to kids they can cater for is a sensitive topic as they will tell you God takes care of children. To even get people to take polio vaccine its war. There was a time Northern Nigeria was the only place polio was thriving and I was at the forefront cos I was involved in a UNICEF project to vaccinate people. Take vaccine to protct your child should be the easiest thing to get people onboard with yet it was an issue

A people who started a terror organzation and named it "Western Education is a sin" those are the ones you built Almajiri schools for? Dey play my people

Until the North decides to change many things we are just wasting our time

But there are schools there.

Is it Igbo and Yoruba children that are attending GSS Koko?

The children of the top and middle class attend those schools, the children of the poor are sent to almajiri schools even if GSS koko is totally free

We'd never know the level of success the initiative would have achieved because it was frustrated, abandoned and ultimately amounted to nothing.

Bill Gates has been investing in polio vaccination for as long as I can remember, I'm sure the success they achieved in the first couple of years can't be compared to the success the program has enjoyed decades later. You keep pointing at the cultural problem the North has, the alternative can't be complete abandonment until they all come around and say we love western education or love vaccines.

The way Bill Gates would measure success in Microsoft would be very different from the way he'd measure success in his NGO initiatives, two very different things.

Polio vaccines didnt get much traction until they got prominent Northerners to speak for it. In my time the Sultan of Sokoto and many Emirs spoke in support of it. On the radio everyday yet some people resisted

Are these elites ready to speak against the Almajiri system today? One Northern elite tweeted that killing Deborah Samuel was bad and quickly deleted it.
If he is scared to condemn outright murder, na Almajiri he wan condemn?

Oga, the poor ones attend there. That was my PPA, and we don't teach on Fridays because it is a market day, and they have to take their harvests to sell

Almajiri school failing is purely political, and not a waste of resources.

The schools there are burdened, but somehow, building more schools is a waste of money. How?

Even if you suggest they learn a trade or vocation, isn't reading and writing necessary?

in the middle east friday is the weekend. friday is their sunday. for all intents and purposes the same applies in the north. even in unilorin, there were never any classes on friday

what number of the total poor attend those schools? are they more than the almajiri numbers?
there will always be those who will decide to go against the grain and put their children in western schools, but what is their ratio to those who conform?

Classes close by 12 in the next local government

But in my own, they do not come on Fridays.

So, nothing is happening on Friday in North Western states abi?

Or if WAEC puts a paper on Friday, they won't write?

What don't you understand?

The student loan is into 2. Institutional and upkeep. The school fees is paid directly to the school while the upkeep is paid directly to the students. 20k every month for 12 month.

So who are the children enrolled in Almajiri schools? You think anyone close to middle class will send his own kids to Almajiri ?
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Ibime(m): 4:38pm On Aug 06
A Rwandan Christian boy suffering from autism kills 3 children

Few far-right thugs start attacking mosques in retaliation wey no get anything to do with the matter

Some Muslims come out to answer fire with fire (not attacking communities, just counterattacking aggressors)

And Apartheid boy Elon Musk is capping nonsense.

And for those wondering, everywhere is calm over here. Few tens of people making noise in smallfolk locations, we dey watch on TV like una. Nothing dey happen.

There is no one that will pass through any major Northern city and miss them
The point is na people born those almajiri they didnt drop from the sky and those parents are the bottom barrel in terms of poverty.
When you build something for people wey no want am, then you have achieved nothing
If the inhabitants are culturally opposed to it you will achieve nothing

The same way US spent trillions on Afghanistan to train their army, equip their army, opened schools for them, sent the girls to school to make them a better society according to western standard

Immediately the US left, less than 48hrs the trained army respectfully handed everything to the Taliban, the girls chased away from school back to the house and shard them to husbands

Read what Amoto94 wrote. All gej did was throw school buildings at a cultural problem. Bill gates has also spent billions on polio vaccines but the north is still one of the world's last polio reservoirs.

If no leaders are ready to teach that western education of any form is a gateway to a better life. And that a better life is desirable (since as Muslims we are taught that this world is a trial and a short test for a much longer hereafter) then any investment in western education for the northern masses is dead on arrival

Especially in a place that celebrates Islam as a way of life and all that.
This reminds me of David Hundeyin's article —Whisper It Quietly: Poverty Is Sometimes A Choice "https://businessday.ng/columnist/article/whisper-it-quietly-poverty-is-sometimes-a-choice/

You can see that Sanusi's position here(As a northerner) is different from Fashola's criticism of the Almajari school system.

While Fashola is talking down on the Almajari system lamenting that Almajari graduates will not be equipped with necessary employable skills, Sanusi actually thinks an Almajari is as good as a regular literate person.

If Sanusi a core northern elite believes an Almajari being able to read and write in Arabic is enough, where does that leave southerners who believe otherwise?

What is the actual value of 'Islamic literacy'?

Sanusi got his Islamic degrees after he got western degrees and worked in a bank. On its own Islamic literacy will have done the same thing for Sanusi it did for the almajiris - nothing. Could he have become CBN governor with that?

Even in the west you do not have hundreds of people studying theology in university.

You know the way liberal arts degrees are often mocked? This is the same thing. What is the monetary value of Islamic literacy beyond a communal flex where you are addressed as 'mallam'?

Then again I am a lowercase Muslim concerned with the distractions of this brief world tongue

I remember the guy who was teaching us Arabic as kids. He is now on a state pilgrimage board I think. He did well for himself. But How many pilgrimage boards are there? What is there for 'islamically literate' people outside of packaged ilekewu for children of the rich?

APC at the center is evil and has failed, an experiment gone awry, we need course correct. Some states might be better served with APC in charge, but then again, doesn't that help APC maintain their grip at the center...an interesting dilemma.

Is Arabic all that Almajiri schools were supposed to teach?

Why can't they learn the regular Boko (Western Education) like the rest of the country. They can even learn it in Arabic, Fulfude or Hausa. Even Saudi children are learning Boko. Are they more pious than the Holy land?

I don't think politicians, regardless of political party are saints, but for whatever reason, this APC isn't working, let's try something else.
