I understand, a lot of things have been anglicized as part of the after-effects of colonialism.

It was just the way swiz claimed no Igbo person bears Chidinma that puzzled me. If he had said the spelling was wrong but admitted those people were still Igbos nonetheless, I won't have any issues with his point.

It's just like me saying "Adebayor" is not Yoruba because of how he spelt his name with letter R after Adebayo(The actual Yoruba name)

Exactly. Maybe he has special interest in Igbo orthography.

You can say Chidimma is the correct or more appropriate spelling but saying Chidinma does not exist at all is a bit wild. cheesy

Spelling Igbo words are quite simple because they follow sound. We have Mmadu, Mmasinachi, Mmasi and others but when it comes to Chidimma, some people started Spelling Chidinma.

It's embarrassing.

You guys are capping

I know many Chidinmas, I dated one

One of your former Governor daughter is called Chidinma with N

Spelling follow recognized rules. If English people spell their name as Favour while others say Favor and you say Favoir, then the burden is on you to prove where you are from.

That's why there is affidavit for name correction if you had spelt rubbish.

You can’t force spelling convention on a person’s name if he or she decides to spell it in a particular manner, even if it does not follow conventional rules.

Your statement that Chidinma as a name does not exist is wrong. Several people use that spelling on official documents and have done so for decades.

You might not agree with it. It might not be the correct or conventional spelling. But it exists. And when it comes to people’s names convention often bows to personal preference.

There are MILLIONS of them, quite literally
It's, as BlueRayDick pointed out, like Shola and Sola, Adebayor and Adebayo etc

I have come to realize that Yoruba spelling don't follow sound unlike Igbo. Nma makes no sound and that's why it is Mma.

But in Yoruba, you have kpele as Pele, Shino as Shina, Lekoñ as Lekan. To make is more confusing, some Yoruba pronounce Simishola while some say Simisola, Bashorun and Basorun.

You can spell any Igbo word if you strictly follow the sound.

I have attached a picture of the Yoruba alphabet for you to see.

Words like Basorun, Sola, Sina, are all the correct spellings following the Yoruba spelling rules . This is because the s is not the normal s but the s with a dot underneath it and it is pronounced “shi” in Yoruba alphabet .

Also in like manner, the P in Pele is correct why ? Because “kpele “ amounts to contravening the Yoruba grammar rule of two consonants not following each other in any Yoruba word.

The GB you see in Yoruba words is seen as one single alphabet and not a combination of G and B.

A lot of these things have been anglicized due to colonial influence .

You should also bear in mind that due to the dialects and accents different Yoruba people have, it is normal for some words to be pronounced differently by different people

I think the bold is the partly the answer and also swiz appears to be a pan African to the core. He’s just like my dad that would be inside his house and be correcting Yoruba newscasters how they pronounce some Yoruba words on TV or Radio 😂

The thing usually amuses me cos he believes every Yoruba person should not be found wanting in reading Yoruba fluently and pronouncing words right.

Shebi it was still swiz that was saying few weeks ago on Chelsea thread that African players should not be playing for European national teams . I think he said something like it’s a shame they abandon their parents’ country and are representing foreign countries grin.

That’s a core pan-African talk

Why then is a pronounced as or like Sina to Sino.

Now we are going to oral Yoruba Language.

It is just like asking why the word FAM is spelt that way and not as FAME since the alphabet "A" is actually pronounced "ei"

An alphabet doesn't have just one sound in English language, that is similar to what we have In Yoruba language.

The name SINA pronounced as SHINOR because

1. The s is the one with " ṣ"
2. The last vowel"a" in the final part of the name gives the vowel sound "or" which is actually written as "à" in Yoruba writing.

It doesn't make it any less embarrassing. Mma simply means "beautiful or beauty"

Mmasinachi = "beauty comes from God".
Mmachukwu = "beauty of God".
Uremma = loosely means "Epitome of beauty".
Chidimma = " God is beautiful ".

What does Nma mean? Because it is only in Chidimma that I have seen people spelling Chidinma.

Your ex should explain to you what Nma means in her own village because it has no meaning in Igbo Language.

I am certain if you ask her to spell only mma, she will realize her goof.

In order for you to know as a non-native speaker, u will need to learn oral Yoruba the same way you learnt oral English as part of English Language.

Not most people can actually do that, so that's why we don't pick offence when some people wrongly spell our names or other words based on how it sounds in their ears without following the Yoruba grammar rules

Exactly my point.

I don't need to tell you to go to Unilag, or LASU before you see fine girls. You don't even need to go to the Island

Everywhere, you run into them. Surulere, Ikeja, Agege.. etc.

The fact that you have to mention schools, or profer locations, perfectly explains my point.

It is happening. The north has been lurching from one crisis to another all due to a large population of idle youths.

It was coedine and coke
Then it was islamist terrorism
Now it is banditry

These problems are going to be with them for generations because the giant numbers of impoverished youths are no longer content with stipend and begging.

They are already in trouble. And they know it. For the last 15 years there has been a mass exodus of middle class northerners to lagos.

It is not a ticking time bomb, it is a fire that is burning

And from where I stand it will continue as they are already breeding the next generations that will not be content to beg for alms and wait on Al Jannah

Like BlueRayDick said, Northern leaders collectively fked the masses. Awolowo pushed for ube
Tafawa balewa was more concerned with charity for the poor rather than empowerment. He could have also set up ube. the mentality continues to this day.

It is almost as if they see a society with millions of poor people who depend on the government for support via stipends as a good thing.

We all saw how Buharis admin was happy doling out n5000 per month as stipend

Even with Monday sit at home, SE is still at the top. Soon SW will be competing with NC.
