BlueRayDick: Exactly. Maybe he has special interest in Igbo orthography. You can say Chidimma is the correct or more appropriate spelling but saying Chidinma does not exist at all is a bit wild. 2 Likes |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by afrodoc2: 11:50am On Aug 08 |
swiz123: You can’t force spelling convention on a person’s name if he or she decides to spell it in a particular manner, even if it does not follow conventional rules. Your statement that Chidinma as a name does not exist is wrong. Several people use that spelling on official documents and have done so for decades. You might not agree with it. It might not be the correct or conventional spelling. But it exists. And when it comes to people’s names convention often bows to personal preference. 2 Likes |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 11:58am On Aug 08 |
swiz123: I have attached a picture of the Yoruba alphabet for you to see. Words like Basorun, Sola, Sina, are all the correct spellings following the Yoruba spelling rules . This is because the s is not the normal s but the s with a dot underneath it and it is pronounced “shi” in Yoruba alphabet . Also in like manner, the P in Pele is correct why ? Because “kpele “ amounts to contravening the Yoruba grammar rule of two consonants not following each other in any Yoruba word. The GB you see in Yoruba words is seen as one single alphabet and not a combination of G and B. A lot of these things have been anglicized due to colonial influence . You should also bear in mind that due to the dialects and accents different Yoruba people have, it is normal for some words to be pronounced differently by different people 7 Likes 2 Shares

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 12:04pm On Aug 08 |
afrodoc2: I think the bold is the partly the answer and also swiz appears to be a pan African to the core. He’s just like my dad that would be inside his house and be correcting Yoruba newscasters how they pronounce some Yoruba words on TV or Radio 😂 The thing usually amuses me cos he believes every Yoruba person should not be found wanting in reading Yoruba fluently and pronouncing words right. Shebi it was still swiz that was saying few weeks ago on Chelsea thread that African players should not be playing for European national teams . I think he said something like it’s a shame they abandon their parents’ country and are representing foreign countries . That’s a core pan-African talk |

swiz123: Now we are going to oral Yoruba Language. It is just like asking why the word FAM is spelt that way and not as FAME since the alphabet "A" is actually pronounced "ei" An alphabet doesn't have just one sound in English language, that is similar to what we have In Yoruba language. The name SINA pronounced as SHINOR because 1. The s is the one with " ṣ" 2. The last vowel"a" in the final part of the name gives the vowel sound "or" which is actually written as "à" in Yoruba writing. 2 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by swiz123(m): 12:33pm On Aug 08 |
Ibime: It doesn't make it any less embarrassing. Mma simply means "beautiful or beauty" Mmasinachi = "beauty comes from God". Mmachukwu = "beauty of God". Uremma = loosely means "Epitome of beauty". Chidimma = " God is beautiful ". What does Nma mean? Because it is only in Chidimma that I have seen people spelling Chidinma. Your ex should explain to you what Nma means in her own village because it has no meaning in Igbo Language. I am certain if you ask her to spell only mma, she will realize her goof. 3 Likes |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 12:42pm On Aug 08 |
swiz123: In order for you to know as a non-native speaker, u will need to learn oral Yoruba the same way you learnt oral English as part of English Language. Not most people can actually do that, so that's why we don't pick offence when some people wrongly spell our names or other words based on how it sounds in their ears without following the Yoruba grammar rules 1 Like |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 12:49pm On Aug 08 |
Unlimited22: Exactly my point. I don't need to tell you to go to Unilag, or LASU before you see fine girls. You don't even need to go to the Island Everywhere, you run into them. Surulere, Ikeja, Agege.. etc. The fact that you have to mention schools, or profer locations, perfectly explains my point. 1 Like |
