About three years ago. It was a bitter winter and I was dining at a restaurant around 11 pm in the night. It was very cold and if I remember correctly, it was -35 degrees Celsius below freezing point and [s]if you pee outside, it freezes before hitting the ground[/s]. cold.

The restaurant was filled with everyone white except myself. I looked behind me and it was crowded with delivery drivers working for the delivery app, Skip the Dishes, waiting to pick up food orders. Nine delivery drivers and all black guys mostly Nigerian looking.

Imagine what it means to have to drive constantly in the bitter cold to deliver food when most people are either sleeping or enjoying themselves in a warm restaurant.

Some of these guys are even delivering with brand new SUVs purchased on credits and after a deeper dive, I came to realize our people here live mostly above their means to impress fellow Nigerians. They buy houses or cars they cannot afford and now have to work three jobs and drive on the side to maintain their fake lifestyles.

This is not a healthy way to live guys, learn to relax and enjoy yourself once in a while, do not live above your means and the fact that you are pre-authorized for that big mortgage, loan, or line of credit does not mean you have to accept.

Learn to live your life without trying to please or impress anyone and occasionally, take time off to have fun and enjoy yourself, take vacations.

Oga, the only advice in this write-up that makes sense is the bolded.

You see the pee matter, na big lie bro.

Lastly, the guy who buys a house has made a huge investment. Saving up to make initial deposit, and the monthly principal repayment is a big win. The house can be sold anytime and deposit+contribution+appreciation will become his gain.

One can still work 3 jobs and have vacations and rest with good planning.

When you don't know people's story, don't come to portray yourself as living the best life. Life na turn by turn.
You were 'dining' amongst 'whites' does not make you better than the " Nine delivery drivers and all black guys mostly Nigerian looking".

Anonymity is what gives cover for all sorts of silly claims and tales. See this fellow that has likely never left Nigeria talking nonsense 🙄

Nigeria is the Poverty Capital of the World. It used to be India until 2018. Both India and Nigeria have been destroyed by socialism but India made big reforms in 1998 and started growing and left Nigeria behind. That's why rich Nigerian residents can be found on flights to India desperately seeking healthcare intervention of one kind or another.

A delivery driver in North America has a better lifestyle and HDI than 99% of Nigerians. The number of cars owned by people aged 21 and lower in Canada or California is likely higher than the total number of private use cars in Nigeria.

The TOTAL REVENUES of the Federal Government of Nigeria last year was $15 billion while those same Nigerian delivery drivers, hair braiders, nurses, cooks and security guards remitted over $20 billion to the country. I mentioned this on another thread and one guy was SHOCKED 😲 He said...."that's Lagos State revenue, not federal" grin

Very important article from Nigeria Businessday in 2019, read and know that the fakery is over!

https://www.google.com/amp/s/businessday.ng/columnist/article/time-to-end-the-nigeria-is-rich-myth/%3famp

I think many Nigerians are still psychologically reluctant to accept Nigeria’s true position in the global pecking order today. Our sense of national self is largely built around the notion that we are a country very rich in natural and human resources, just one good government away from greatness. Some optic illusions further render this belief hard to shake.

In every state, there are a few dozen people (usually involved in politics) who possess such visibly stupendous wealth, we can be forgiven for assuming there is a lot more where that came from. Thing is, there isn’t. If you shared Nigeria’s 8.83 trillion naira national budget equally among Nigerians, each citizen would receive a paltry 45,000 naira or so; hardly enough to keep you in Panadol for the year.

But the end result is that when you combine the authentic and visible wealth of a few hundred Nigerians living off the state with the lifestyles of all those trying hard to appear rich, the rest of society can be forgiven for believing there must be a lot of money in Nigeria.

This is bad because it encourages many intelligent people to focus not on thinking of how to create wealth, but on how to corner their own “share” of this fabulous national cake. Either by getting into government or by winning a government contract and then behaving as though the pockets of the state are bottomless.

Another factor fuelling this “there is money in Nigeria” belief is that many people pretend to have more of it than they actually do. My friend who runs a crèche in one of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Lagos says she has lost count of the number of parents who drive the most expensive Range Rovers yet struggle to pay their children’s nursery fees on time. Of course, aspirational Nigerians don’t live above their means just because, they do so in response to societal pressure for them to prove they are “somebodies”; worth talking business to, hanging out with and treating respectfully. Raise your hand if you have ever pretended to have more money than you really do so as to be treated respectfully somewhere in Nigeria (my hand is raised high).

The statistics are a good opening into the REALITY of Nigeria. Simple question that gives a lot of insight - how many Nigerian HOUSEHOLDS earn ₦1 million per month? The stats and lived experience tells us that it isn't more than 1% of the population.

₦1 million is equivalent to $650USD. This is an amount that low skill workers like cooks and taxi drivers regularly send home to Nigeria. The most popular default middle class occupation for Nigerians in the USA is nursing, it requires only a Nigeria equivalent of OND and today their starting salary is $33/hr with a bonus payment of $20K upfront. Just these people alone live better than 99% of the Nigerian public and they can EASILY save $650 per month if they want to.

What is more, over any 10 year period, a significant percentage of these low skilled Nigerian immigrant workers IMPROVE their skills AND earnings by substantial amounts....this part is often ignored by envious denizens of the Zoo as they desperately cope with their own constantly diminishing prospects.

Let's not even get into higher level professions or higher skilled labour or professional business owners...say owners of firms in the construction trades, healthcare businesses or janitorial firms, accounting businesses and such. There's no need to cause you to have a jealousy motivated stroke like this guy

https://www.nairaland.com/8118996/japa-people-now-liquidate-investments/9#130411377

Read and laugh. This is public data!

For people like you, your poverty addled brain can only handle the LOWEST GRADE jobs in the USA and the other Anglo-Western nations...and those workers still live better than 99% of Nigerians. That is FACT, it's the data, it's undeniable.

Good Luck to Nigerians!!!

There is challenging yourself to do big things, there is also living above your means. You have to realize some people thrive under pressure. I get a lot of people want security of that 8 to 5, everythingbsoft. But you have to understand life is boring for some people if something is not chasing them. The feeling of using ur hard and smart work to break down hurdles and conquering them is what some people live for.

Very apt. Even in Naija, people do things just to impress others, because of what people will say! A man will decide he needs three kids all because children are a blessing from God and his friends have four each.

I once worked as a financial Planner in a bank and I studied a particular ethnic group.

Ethiopian and Eritreans.

They are uneducated and do menial jobs like cleaning, construction and taxi driving.

Theses people are always frugal living within their means, most of them I came across have huge savings in their account up to $50,000.

They also invest a lot. I see a lot of cleaners saving huge money and also lots of professional with a six figure income living on overdraft all through the year with zero savings.

You fault his sample size and still had the audacity to talk about a few insignificant buddies who are either on vacation or planning to go on tours. The OP is very right about his assertion. Many Nigerians abroad who migrated for greener pastures are on this boat. They work overtime, hold up 3 jobs, just to keep up with the Joneses. This is not even something to argue about.

Some of them even succeed with a six figure income only to get into more debt, bigger cars, more houses and the the work circle continues.

I had a guy in my office about 7 years go, he was earning more than 140k dollars per album no savings and maxed out 10 credit cards with zero savings.

He told me he was building a house in Nigeria from his credit cards and my mouth fell open.

Nigerians actually think they are smarter than the whites.

I think you should be careful as some others have said of hasty conclusions. The person living in a shared room, is that normal Is that not what we call face me I slap you in Nigeria?Hostel style

What if the person wants to getaway from that stress? There are people who live like that in Nigeria and we don't complain. We live a communal life and we even have people on Nairaland abusing parents who bring up kids in such environments. How is that life normal?

Why is the white man living frugally smarter and a Nigerian living in a 3br abroad is not smart for living comfortably? Do you know what the past life of the white man is?Do you know whether he once declared bankruptcy. Do you think a Nigerian can cope with living like that and it won't affect his mental health? Everyone's story is different. This person living in a shared room is not enjoying. That's suffering and I don't care if he is black or white. I sense some level of inferiority complex here. That a white man does something does not make it right.

Highly qualified Nigerians are making a good life for themselves abroad and you want them to suffer to make it. Bros how far

I will take that Nigerian immigrant who is taking care of 2 families in 2 continents over someone who cannot afford to take care of another human being and not raise a family. Wherever you go, immigrants have the hustle power because they see opportunities homies take for granted. This is why sometimes you need to step outside your comfort zone to see your privilege.
