Before I continue with this conversation, what's the bone of contention? That some thugs did not carry knives and daggers in Birmingham and they were not far right? That they incited violence but did not say rape women? That they are not MDL? That they did not beat innocent people as well? That they are not extremists? Or that it is false information? We are not allowed to talk about other extremists on this forum unless it is far right? I said I am afraid of those carrying daggers and knives in my city as well as far right. What's wrong with saying that? I did not know that on this forum, we are only allowed to mention the evil perpetrated by far right. Any other information is false? Goodenoch: 5 Likes |

dupyshoo: I'm not contending anything. I asked one very simple question about something you claimed with certainty and you haven't been able to substantiate it. I won't be drawn into this attempt to muddy the waters with random irrelevant points. I'm certain the pattern I outlined is clear to anyone who takes a look now. Up to you to self-reflect...or not. ✌🏿️ 1 Like |

I dont care which water is being muddied. I care that all extremists views should be dealt with. No one should incite violence in our nation and nobody should be afraid to go out. Goodenoch: 3 Likes |

dupyshoo: This article was a good read, thanks for sharing. The writer (a former government commissioner and adviser, plus a BAME woman and a human rights activist) was very balanced, what some here might call "sitting on the fence" but actually shows her ability to think critically and in the round. It also shows that now that the dust is settling thankfully, the government, think tanks, the media etc are turning their attention to analysing the root causes of the riots (ergo it is possible for someone to mention "causes" without justifying the riots!). The writer already alluded to a number of probable causes in her article; as you've mentioned, hopefully the government will take action to correct and prevent extremism, far right and all forms. #copied from the article: The government... should also commit to a review into the riots to help understand the causes and provide answers to questions including why some towns and cities did not erupt in riots or violence while others did. Some data provides clues. Research from the 2011 English riots suggests that strong community cohesion, a shared identity, community pride and having a stake in their neighbourhood stopped or reduced people rioting in their area, with analysis highlighting that 71% of the riots occurred in the areas ranked in the worst 10% for social cohesion. Lack of belonging, self-worth, sense of equity and democratic participation in communities facing hardships can also create the conditions in which extremist narratives take hold. It is easy to take our plural and cohesive society for granted. Threats old and new continue to undermine our ability to live well together and yet we lack the necessary strategic approach to prevent this. This must now be addressed. 3 Likes |

Hello, Please can someone guide me on what to buy to access free TV channels? Tired of using Apps to watch BBC News et al. I want access to all UK local channels. |
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Zahra29: 4:13pm On Aug 12 |
Akorkor: Hey, a Freeview box like below should give you access to local and many cable channels with the ability to record, rewind etc plus a one-off fee (no subscription charges) https://amzn.eu/d/gcMtcJ8 There might be more sophisticated options however so wait for the gurus like Lexus to advise further 😊 3 Likes 3 Shares |

BTW, @Zahra29, if I get the amazon stuff, do I need antenna or satellite outside? Baba Lexus, let me know your suggestion. The £25 is for what? Is this monthly or yearly? |

ahn ahn Lets not get biased here please.... Both sides have been violent.. seen the videos myself.... the beauty (can also be a pain) of this era is everyone got phones out and recording 2 guys were sentenced last week for an attack on anti-immigration participants draped in the Union Jack flags Infact, one of the men already had two previous convictions (1 was for racially/religious aggravated assault) Lets not act brand new here please Duppysho is right... we should condemn all forms of violence, from both sides, irrespective of our stance The wild part is there were live videos of muslims openly threatening on the live interviews.. There was one recent video where as the police held an anti-immigration participant, the muslims attacked and some even hit the police.. A man was attacked by a mob of muslim youths at a pub, with his head kicked multiple times.. The Muslim community leader and some activists have apologised A Labour councillor asking for far-right demonstrators throats to be cut is what He has also been charged Common man... this cant continue from both sides There must be another way Goodenoch: 9 Likes |

Been quiet for months and just reading.... I don't understand why anyone will ask Zahra to not type here or go to another platform just because he or they don't support her views.. She didn't break any rules.... She didn't attack anyone etc What is the point of this forum if we all have same opinion? Can you speak on this issue without a deep-dive into the whole immigration issue? What has she done wrong? I don't see a single place where she supported the violence etc Trying to bully someone or push them away from the forum just because they're not typing what you want to see is a No No.. especially as no rules were broken Some of y'all need to chill and stop acting out...... 9 Likes |

I can equally say, I condemned but understand why some Muslim thugs were rioting as they were responding to the initial attacks, if I want to go by zahra logic and yours too… or justify kicking of the man in that pub because he was racist to them, I’m sure you follow that particular case (the man has been kicked out of the pub twice before, for been racist). Its okay not to like Muslims or its practice but its sad how some people try to paint all Muslims as terrorist or extremists. profemebee: 4 Likes |

I am never against peaceful protest against far right thugs but bringing out knives and dagger while wearing balaclavas is crossing the line. This seem to me like an intention to kill. While condemning far right thugs,we should not turn to them or even worse than them. If we can't condemn that, the we are hypocrites. kaybee3: 1 Like |

What logic? My point: Dupyshoo was right.... both sides did stuff.... we need to condemn every act of violence.. let the Police do their job of preventing and detecting disturbances Peace will always be the answer War/violence never solves anything There has to be another way..... Grateful that the dust has settled and things are getting back to normal wrt the unrest that happened in several places in the UK. BBC in-depth article on titled - Starmer will be judged on how he tackles root causes of riots https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5ykr900my8o I wanted to paste the whole article but decided not to because its a bit long, i'll just post a few points from the article. If interested, the link is up there. Yet the prime minister and his aides have pointedly avoided answering questions about the underlying causes of the riots. I’m told the reason for this message discipline is a concern that discussing causes might be misinterpreted as suggesting some of the unrest was justified. For now the government has avoided discussing immigration, again for fear of suggesting any of the unrest was justified. But in time they are likely to remind voters that the prime minister believes many people do have legitimate concerns about legal and illegal migration. Some in the Labour Party want their leader to call out racism as a major factor. Others diagnose poverty and a lack of opportunity as a root cause. Mental health and addiction are repeatedly mentioned in mitigation in courtrooms this week, but others were drunk or carried by the moment. Most of the towns and cities affected in recent days have high levels of deprivation and above average levels of asylum seeker housing, according to analysis of Home Office statistics. |
Re: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) by Cyberknight: 4:41pm On Aug 13 |
dupyshoo: Various reasons. Some are full-time carers. Some are women/parents who have dropped out of the workforce to raise children. Quite a few older people left work during Covid and decided to start their retirement from there. There are some who were self-employed outside IR35 and got sick of the whole IR35 thing and don't bother working (or declaring income) anymore and just do their own thing. There are also people who want to work but cannot access jobs - they may be in towns/villages where there are few opportunities but can't travel/commute/relocate to where jobs are either because they can't afford to or there is no available transport (high cost of train fares, for instance) or they have support networks they cannot leave or the tight housing market won't allow it. The actual number of people who are the Telegraph's enemies, i.e. so-called persons on benefits who supposedly actually can work is debatable. 2 Likes |

If there is no benefit all you mentioned here will not stop even a disabled person from getting a job. benefit money is good to a large number of them, take away benefit then the story wil be different 1 Like |

profemebee: At this point, we need to consider opening a "UK - Politics" thread so we can leave this thread for "Life in the UK"... I pity new folks who would want to read through the thread to gain knowledge like some of us did when we landed here. Nowadays, no one asks questions anymore because the thread is so heated with far-this and that arguments. When people ask questions, there's barely answers. Even US Politics goes on for days and I wonder. It was almost tolerable before the Elections since it was assumed to be campaign but now it's just name-calling and ideology-dragging talk that barely benefits anyone. Again, maybe the group has matured so much that people don't need those childish yarns about jobs, housing, driving, visa, credit, travel, etc and are now more focused on the big British talk 21 Likes 1 Share |

justwise: Slightly more than half of the UK's population take out more from the system than they pay in in taxes, whether or not they are receiving cash back from the government in the form of what we commonly think of as "'benefits''. Non-cash benefits in the form of how much it costs the government to educate one child in school (for those who have children), or how much to cover an average GP or hospital visit are also included. 1 Like |
