Dumebi Kachikwu: Nobody Is Out To Sabotage Dangote’s Refinery, He’s Now In An Industry With Bigger Players

Dumebi Kachikwu says it’s illogical for anyone to want to frustrate Dangote Refinery, especially during an FX crisis.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA7leQMzhFg

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2023 general elections, Dumebi Kachikwu, has said that there is no sabotage against the Dangote Refinery but rather, Aliko Dangote has just stepped into an industry where there are bigger players, different from his when he had a monopoly or was part of a duopoly in Nigeria’s food and cement sectors.

He said this in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, while responding to the allegations of sabotage against the Dangote Refinery, as he said that since the issue between the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Dangote Refinery came into the public sphere, it has been blown out of proportion.

Giving his personal take on the matter, Kachikwu said, “Dangote has operated in a space for the longest time in the food sector where he’s akin to being a monopoly. He’s operated in the cement sector where he’s probably part of a duopoly. This is the first time Dangote is entering waters where you have mega players, probably bigger than his company is, and he cannot understand that Dangote the superstar in food production or in cement production is not a superstar in oil and gas where you have the likes of Shell, Mobil and the rest. So, I think that that’s one of the issues that is at play here.”

Addressing the allegations of conspiracy against the Dangote Refinery, he said, “I don’t believe that it’s in the government’s interest, in a country that is suffering a foreign exchange crisis, to frustrate a Dangote Refinery when it’s in their interest to have domestic production so we don’t spend all the dollars we’re spending every month to import oil. So, I don’t understand why anyone will think that.

“And again, when people have made allegations that people have conspired to frustrate Dangote Refinery – let me ask a question. If all the refineries in the world, all refineries in the world, barring none, are all importing oil from different parts of the world, why will anyone want to frustrate a refinery in Nigeria who is going to be like the other players who can import oil from any part of the world? It doesn’t make any sense to me. So, I believe that the argument is emotive.

“We do understand that our government has failures – serious systemic failures, serious operational failures – but we don’t have to bring that into every conversation, because in this conversation, that’s not what the issue is, especially when the government has come, brought out figures to say this is what we allocated to the different refineries, and if we do understand that the government has forward sold a lot of oil that they should have at this moment because their refineries were not working, that’s the conversation.”

He then added, “I don’t think we are on the right path when we make this whole issue about government, NUPRC, NNPC not giving Dangote enough crude oil. I believe that because this matter got into the public space, sentiments entered this matter, and it’s being blown out of proportion. When you have a refinery as large as Dangote’s refinery, because when it’s fully on stream, that’s going to be the 7th largest refinery in the world, you have to have planned or forecasted properly, you have to had, four years before, have your contracts in place.”

Kachikwu then spoke on Dangote Refinery complaining about not receiving the 29 million barrels of oil that the NUPRC claimed to have allocated to the refinery, saying, “We hear that something was promised Dangote. In the oil and gas sector, you don’t work with promises, you work with contracts. Does Dangote have contracts with anybody for that product? If he does have a contract, and if they failed to meet their contractual obligations, Dangote can head to court. I suspect that there might not be any contract.”

The country alone fights progress, I pray they don't cripple the refinery like every other abandoned government facility.

Here we go again. Always trying to make it look as if Dangote held other people's brocus and told them not to invest in the same sector that he is investing in.
As a matter of fact, it has been shown that there is no sector where Dangote is a monopoly. He may have a larger market share but definitely not a monopoly.

If anything, it is even in the refinery that he may even enjoy some sort of monopoly since there are always no one with a working refinery in the country.

he had a monopoly or was part of a duopoly in Nigeria’s food and cement sectors.

These ones - Dumebi and Oseni(and the entire Arise News with the newspaper) are hired hands to speak ill of Dangote Refinery. Dangote has operated in the cement industry with many major players, same as food industry, again with many players both local and international. So where is the monopoly that these people are singing about. These are the ones that the external forces have bought over with money just like they wanted to do to Hudeyin. Hudeyin has exposed them, hence they looked for hatchet men and organizations.

It is shameful that these set of people and organizations can sell their soul for $ (silly amount) and it shows that they can even sell their mother for a cup of coffee.

I really dont understand this, why can't NNPC give him crude oil contracts?. NNPC is now operating more as a profit making organisation rather than a government agency. We currently consume 63 million litres a day, while dangote can refine 650,000 barrels a day, when converted to litres that is about 103 million litres, meaning that dangote only needs just 400,000 barrels of crude oil perday to take care of the whole country. then we dont need to get crude oil from abroad and we can save our FX. If NNPC really wanted us to refine crude oil in nigeria, they would have paid off their 20% stake in dangote refinery, but they havent. I am sure few persons are making millions of dollars from the crude oil we refine abroad which is why even the port harcourt refinery is still yet to start working. God has to save us from these cabals

I've never liked this man. He's always offpoint.

Are shell and Mobil operating refineries in Nigeria? Is Dangote refinery competing in the same space with Mobil and Shell? This man just muddled up everything.

Every big entrepreneur in every country gets some level of government leverage and concessions. That's what built the likes of Mobil and Shell to be what they are today.

We were all alive when NNPC and Co was promising Dangote enough crude to drink and bath. They were even his biggest promoters, getting CBN and even the presidency to grant concessions on forex and loans to him only to turn around and start saying rubbish now that the man wants them to live up to the promises they made.

There's no serious business that goes about publicly making statements it can't back up at the critical juncture.

This is the reason why the likes of Total, Shell etc are divesting fast from Nigeria's uncertain business environ where politics and political considerations top everything else.

When you have politicians running your economy, the result is always a fractured and dysfunctional rent- seeking economy like we have now.
