Last week my mother in-law was sent an iPhone 12, Samsung s23 and Samsung S4 watch from UK, the sender didn't inform me she will be using DHL and I didn't know she will be sending brand new phones. She once used DHL to send few items in the past, so she believed she wouldn't have any problem with them.

She said they charged her close to 200k there to have all 3 items sent.

Item got to Nigeria and I got a link to make a payment of over 1.2m to clear the items. They claim Nigeria custom took over the items after they noticed the original amount was not declared.

The sender declared a total amount of 1,200$.
DHL claimed custom reviewed the amount n inflated it 2500$
The sender after this provided them with screenshot of her purchase from Argos yet this fee wasn't reviewed.

I was advised to go to their stand for airport and negotiate with them which I'll do before the week runs out.

If you've experienced this before or know a way out or you know how I can bring down this amount, kindly drop comment. My number is also available Incase you want to DM. I don't want to go there without knowing how to go about this.

Thanks

Buying things from abroad can work smoothly at times.

At other times, the Nigerian factor will hit you with a nasty shock.

The item is in DHL custody and not with customs. Customs do not individually charge fees on items coming into the country. Tell the sender to go back to their office in UK and report the agent threatening. Do not bulge. Stand your ground.

It’s either they return it or they replace the items if it gets missing.

It’s normal thing oooo just close eye and pay it or just ignore it and let them keep the products. I remember when I was in the uk I ordered some linen material from the USA via dhl. When they showed up at my door they showed up with tax form, I think it’s VAT which was like a fifth of what I ordered. They said if I don’t pay the tax they can’t give me the goods. I had to close eye and pay the tax before they gave me my linens.

So it’s standard practice. Pay it or forfeit it. It’s only phones anyway

Someone received cloths (2) and was charged £15 about 20,000 naira). Those cloths may not be worth more than 10k.
If you don't pay it, the item may be returned to the sender. Then his sending money will be gone.

Your decision

Next time, tell them to send the money.

If you have contacts at the customs you will get your item out for some meager amount, don't rush to pay. These guys are making a lot of money from inflating the cost and their target is electronics (phones, smart devices, iPads). I went through hell trying to get some used IPads cleared. After that, I promised myself that I would never purchase any of the items listed above.

400k to 500k will buy you iPhone 12.

200k she use to send the items will buy you the gold. Then the remaining balance will buy you the Samsung.

What rubbish is all this. Next time tell sender to send you the money to buy them here.

Nigeria customs are part of the inflation in the country currently.
