Last week my mother in-law was sent an iPhone 12, Samsung s23 and Samsung S4 watch from UK, the sender didn't inform me she will be using DHL and I didn't know she will be sending brand new phones. She once used DHL to send few items in the past, so she believed she wouldn't have any problem with them.

She said they charged her close to 200k there to have all 3 items sent.

Item got to Nigeria and I got a link to make a payment of over 1.2m to clear the items. They claim Nigeria custom took over the items after they noticed the original amount was not declared.

The sender declared a total amount of 1,200$.
DHL claimed custom reviewed the amount n inflated it 2500$
The sender after this provided them with screenshot of her purchase from Argos yet this fee wasn't reviewed.

I was advised to go to their stand for airport and negotiate with them which I'll do before the week runs out.

If you've experienced this before or know a way out or you know how I can bring down this amount, kindly drop comment. My number is also available Incase you want to DM. I don't want to go there without knowing how to go about this.

Thanks
If you wanted to you would have done it before
The price came out
I wanted to clear my iPhone 14 pro max and series 8 ultra back in 2022 when it came out they charged me 500k
I tried explaining to them that it was a gift but they said that I should have contacted them before the
Bill came out

My own smart wrist watch is still with the Nigerian customs for over two months, according to the shipping company. It's just a less than 200 dollars smart watch and they have refused to release the watch. Nobody has contacted me from the customs, the courier company said the item is still with Nigerian customs and this is over two months. Some people are saying that the item has been stolen and I am wondering, "stolen by who?" This country na wa!

If you have your proof of payment you can go there and present the receipt. It will be worked on. The only reason customs revalued it will be because the shipper understated the value.

Tell them to return it. If they refuse, the sender has a right to file a claim over there in the DHL UK office and they’ll pay her. Don’t mind that uncouth Nigerian DHL staff threatening her.

The item is in DHL facility and not with customs. Don’t bend to their wills. They do the valuation and customs fees right in their office. Customs do not charge them per item but as bulk for duties.

Lol you speak with a lot of ignorance.

All facilities in the Aiport belongs to the government, it is managed by them even when you take a lease on them.
Customs duty are done per piece and not in bulk. Thats why it is called Single Goods Declaration. Google SGD and don't lead peope astray

Are you also aware that any item that comes into the country is an import and duty must be paid? And for you to export out you must first clear the shipment?

Eeyah.....

There's an e-evaluation and e-invoicing platform that the CBN introduced to the customs and it uses a kind of universal pricing for the goods. Most times, people who br8ng in goods under-invoice to reduce customs rates to pay while those who export over-invoice so that they can attract export incentives. The e-evaluation and e-invoicing was introduced to curb this and was introduced during the Emefiele-led CBN era.
The best thing to do now is to pay or else your goods will not be released to you. If you go and settle the wrong guys you may end up with double jeopardy niyen.

It's always better to have an idea of the costs of these goods ahead before sending them because a bargain sale may not be the same as the price on the e-evaluation and e-invoicing platform.

It is amazing and annoying to see how you yoruba folks support every evil and rubbish that are currently happening in Nigeria just because your kinsmen are now in power.
This is a disgusting and lowly behaviour!
How can you expect him to pay such an outrageously inflated price that was based on a hypothetical cost price manufactured by those criminally minded people at the customs?

I already told the sender to call back the item. She just asked me to make the attempt of going to their office for her first if nothing positive show after this. Then she will

Someone received cloths (2) and was charged £15 about 20,000 naira). Those cloths may not be worth more than 10k.
If you don't pay it, the item may be returned to the sender. Then his sending money will be gone.

Your decision

Pls don't pay, this is scam, if you want to send anything from any country, the sender is the one to pay for the shipping and not the receiver, once it comes for you the receiver paying that means it's a scam, pls don't pay any money....this is pure scam and not from DHL....that msg was cloned

The reason why it's better to buy from Amazon. They will cost everything including shipping and custom clearing fees. You will see the prices and pay upfront. You won't pay anything again after placing the order on the site.

Spot on! DHL are neck deep in this. Reason I stopped using DHL account. They pick up an item from a location abroad for you and when it gets to Naija you are billed hundreds of thousands or even a Million+.
OP, I advise you put up a strong worded letter/petition to the DHL office where the item originated from citing attempts to rip you off from the Nigerian end. Tell them you want your package back.
I strongly believe the DHL Nigeria shall soft pedal.
This is from experience. I eventually abandoned the item with them since it cost me less than $200 to buy during Buhari' first tenure and $1 was less than N500 and they(DHL) were asking for over 200k. I leave the package for them and they called and emailed their ass*s out, pleading I come pick up at a much lower rate.

And people are here in Nigeria, their businesses of selling these same items are failing because of no patronage. What do you think they would think of this person?

The ones I also suffered customs/ndlea/courier wahala from in 2022, most of them are still unsold.
