dhl is following a laid down rule by custom to avoid problems. It is easier for them. I sent phone, a computer and other items last year home.. and I got the email for extra payment to customs, because I added my email as the receiver. The amount wasn’t this much… but I guess this is the standard now. Better to send money than all this stress

The import duties in this country is just unbelievably high and it is being calculated in dollars, why not charge a fix fee for each category of goods and stop calculating using price of goods, that's bad, very bad...and our exchange rate is the worst in west africa... a whole giant of Africa...

To clear 2007 Toyota camry at warf is 6.5million currently... in 2008, it was cleared for N500,000...

It makes me to wonder is Nigeria going forward or backwards... what sort of country is this?

Last week my mother in-law was sent an iPhone 12, Samsung s23 and Samsung S4 watch from UK, the sender didn't inform me she will be using DHL and I didn't know she will be sending brand new phones. She once used DHL to send few items in the past, so she believed she wouldn't have any problem with them.

She said they charged her close to 200k there to have all 3 items sent.

Item got to Nigeria and I got a link to make a payment of over 1.2m to clear the items. They claim Nigeria custom took over the items after they noticed the original amount was not declared.

The sender declared a total amount of 1,200$.
DHL claimed custom reviewed the amount n inflated it 2500$
The sender after this provided them with screenshot of her purchase from Argos yet this fee wasn't reviewed.

I was advised to go to their stand for airport and negotiate with them which I'll do before the week runs out.

If you've experienced this before or know a way out or you know how I can bring down this amount, kindly drop comment. My number is also available Incase you want to DM. I don't want to go there without knowing how to go about this.

There is no fixed cost for customs duty only fixed rates e.g 10% etc. You claim to know that what was sent was not from customs. How is that? Do you know the intricacies of computing and finalizing duty assessments till the exit note stage? I guess not. You are talking to someone with years of experience in this field, I own a customs duty software as well.. lol.

Duties are computed based on the cost of the item, insurance and freight and other landing cost. Mind you as an importing country, this is not done using your local currency as base. They use the foreign currency you purchase in, and then convert it to naira. So the higher your exchange rate and cost the higher the duty. See how govt policies can affect all strata of your life?

You should just learn from me, what I am telling you is real and correct. I am not arguing for anything. I know this process like the back of my palm.

This is exactly the same situation I am presently in, I sent clothes of 179 pounds to my sister as a birthday gift, the asked me to pay 474k to clear which is close to 250pounds, I paid DHL 110 to send fro Nigeria to Uk.
I have sent receipt of the goods to DHL, but they responded today that Nigeria custom can not do anything.
I will just leave the clothes and give her the 250 pounds than giving the custom.

I onced paid 320k because of 2 12pro max in 2021 but later discovered it was all lies after Custome fees …Yoh will pay Dss fees and after that you be ask to pay NDLEA fees …fees plenty if actually pay the first one

The sender requested they send it back. She was told its not with them anymore, d agent said it was handed over to custom. One of their agent even threatened the lady by saying even if she didn't collect the items, she will still pay the fee.

Next time, the op would rather get the money and buy locally.

Europe is very good with that, Canada and Australia too. Especially food and agricultural products, you will pay high Customs duties over there. They do that to protect their farmers.

Oga you’re only blowing grammar that we all know. Duties are charged by certain % of the value of goods declared by the importer. The op clearly showed the cost of those items in the screenshot. They were bought online. The seller or the store would provide proof of purchase for those items and that’s what is supposed to be used to calculate the duty fees.

1.2M naira divided by current rate of 1600 is $750. The item costs from the screenshots attached is $1433.66 when converted to USD.

Why would the customs charge you $750 for items worth $1433.66? They claimed they used the value of the items now. Those two phones are old phones and not brand new. Check on Apple website and see if you’ll find that particular iPhone 12 still selling there.

The second phone is S23FE it is clearly written in the description as “mint” that means it’s not a new phone.

How did DHL and customs come about the valuation they gave both phones to warrant a duty fee of $750?

Explain the intricacies that warrant the duty cost $750 based on the value they were purchased for and not some made up value by the DHL and customs as they claim.

A few months ago, I sent three brand-new laptops to my staff in Nigeria, but they couldn’t get them cleared. The shipment was passed from one agency to another. After paying the duty that Nigerian Customs charged, I was informed that the DSS had also seized it - suspected of being a proceed of crime. Even after bribing a DSS official, who they gave me his contact number, I was then told the laptops had been transferred to the drug agency.

It was a real nightmare until I petitioned UPS here in London, accusing them of taking no action against their staff in Nigeria while they are colluding with Customs, DSS, and Immigration to extort people sending goods to Nigeria. I informed them that I would be recalling the items if no action was taken. I sent a copy of my official complaint against UPS to all those corrupt agencies in Nigeria. Two days later, the DSS officer called to inform me that the laptops had been sent back to UPS for delivery to my office in Nigeria.
