The Federal Government has prohibited individuals under the age of 18 from taking part in the National Examinations Council and West African Examinations Council exams.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman disclosed this when he featured on Channels Television’s ‘Sunday Politics’ program on Sunday night.

Mamman explained that the federal government has directed WAEC, which conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination and NECO, which oversees the Senior School Certificate Examination to enforce the 18-year age requirement for candidates wishing to take these exams.

This, he said was not a new policy.

He added that the age limit for candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, administered by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, remains set at 18 years.

He said, “It is 18 (years). What we did at the meeting that we had with JAMB (in July) was to allow this year and for it to serve as a kind of notice for parents that this year, JAMB will admit students who are below that age but from next year, JAMB is going to insist that anybody applying to go to university in Nigeria meets the required age which is 18.

“For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a new policy; this is a policy that has been there for a long time.

“Even basically if you compute the number of years pupils, and learners are supposed to be in school, the number you will end up with is 17 and a half – from early child care to primary school to junior secondary school and then senior secondary school. You will end up with 17 and a half by the time they are ready for admission.

“So, we are not coming up with new policy contrary to what some people are saying; we are just simply reminding people of what is existing. In any case, NECO and WAEC, henceforth will not be allowing underage children to write their examinations. In other words, if somebody has not spent the requisite number of years in that particular level of study, WAEC and NECO will not allow them to write the examination.”

I know there are exceptional cases whereby a 17year old student can top his class in the Uni, but exceptions dont make the rules

So a child who's intelligent will have to wait till he or she reaches 18 before writing SSCE. This seems to me like a waste of time.

undecided undecided

This is quite retrogressive in this day and age of advanced technology.

I left secondary school at age 15, almost 3 decades ago. Qualified through JAMB at age 16, and it has been a great ride of life afterwards.

Presently, the average age to sit for WAEC/NECO for 6 sets of students in Secondary School is 16 years. What provision is in place for the proposed 2-year minimum lag? Should they just stop at their present class of study and continue when they fit the 18 years model?

Or, will the FG provide and encourage vocational centers for all to bridge the Post Secondary School/ Pre-University stage? If this is in place, it will make load of sense. Otherwise, it will be unfair to plunge our future leaders to an unfair loss of competitive advantage among their global peers

This was the standard we knew growing up in Nigeria of the 80s and 90s, with the exception of those who were 16yrs because they skipped primary 6 to enter secondary school from primary 5.

So I don't understand where this age 18 matter is coming from.

If I complete my secondary school at age 17 like I actually did, am I not supposed to be in the university by the September of that same year and age?

Still, I think the minimum age should be 16yrs, to weed out those who abuse age limitations from the early classes.

A lower limit of 18yrs is an anomaly.

Rootprof:
So what will happen to students that are in age bracket of 12-15 in ss3 ? Will they sit at home for 3-6 years ?

What are they doing in that class at that age?

It is such wanton and mindless abuse by parents and schools that has led to such wake up call from the policy makers.

In this age where maturity occurs early, we are supposed to be moving with the tides.

This very move is retrogressive, and do not portray best practices.

16 years is perfect for WAEC; but 18? Nah... That's too late!

Marriageable age should also be 18, if they want this policy to stand!!!

So what happens to students that would be 16 or 17 next year in SS3 to pass out next year.

Are they supposed to wait until they attain 18 years. What a crazy decision.

When they gain admission 18, use 5 years in University due to strike and graduate 23; wait for NYSC list to come out for close to a year and then finish NYSC 25 that's where problem will now start.

They may look for jobs for over a year and by then companies will start requesting for them to be not more than 25 years for a graduate trainee role(By that time they are already past 26 years).

The policy is a senseless one in view of how complex things are in the Nigerian labour market

Nonsense talk. Nothing exceptional about being in uni at 16, 17 and being focused. They are actually the ones that are even at the forefront. Train your child up properly, you have little to worry about. We just find ways to stunt greatness in the country.

U also need to understand the peculiarities of the country. What will a student ne doing after school in a country like Nigeria?

The options are many but most can lead to destruction:

Drugs
Bad friends
Prostitution
Drugs
Drugs
Lawlessness
Lazy

Even if u say he or she should enroll in a class, how many parents have the money?

Ur theory also fails the theory of use and disuse.

A brain not put to continual use will depreciate over time.

Time is of essence.

I finished high school at 16. So these folks are trying to tell me that I woulda waited for 2 years? Americans are celebrating 14 year olds having PHDs, we are stifling growth. Wait until it's their kids. They will find a way around it.

If they were busy doing their jobs properly, they won't have time for witchcraft laced policies such as these
