Yeah, I'm hardly feeling Middle Earth vibes in it but the storyline looks interesting.

Lol, there's already hate on it on social media with many people angered by the female character Hera gaining prominence in this story.
Trust the anti-woke crowd to farm clout anywhere there's backlash

Alien Romulus 7.5/10

Finally, the Alien franchise went back to its horror roots!!

I like some subtle references to the earlier movies.

The lighting (or lack thereof) added to the scary vibes.

One drawback that the film does have is a "final girl trope". Cliche, isn't it?

Great movie. I'm going to see the whole Alien franchise again, even though I know that this movie is mostly related to the first movie in the franchise

A review i culled from IMDB below, kinda of encapsulates how I feel about this, and to some extent aligns with your review, because i didn't think for the life of me, they had more meaningful story to tell beyond part 2, they even egged out a separate "Minions" movie sometime ago, that didn't really hit so i wondered why there was need for this, if not for the serial nostalgic baiting milking scheme, that seems to be a theme recently in Hollywood, I mean a new "Toy Story" and "Frozen" is also planned, even "The Lion King" is getting another remix soon 😩.

Media that isn't based on existing IP or franchise is such a rare find now, and i think this kind stifles creativity but they should totally carry on, as it seems that's what the people want 👍🏿

This thought makes me ponder, can there actually be an "original" idea for a film or a show going forward? Like 100% fresh, and never seen before idea? 🤔.

I highly doubt, but i think there are so many materials and books that films and show can adapt from, and there is a way for screen writers to tweak existing IPs, to maintain some certain degree of originality and keep things fresh.

Depends on what you mean by original idea.

You can borrow from previous works while adding a new spin that makes it feel fresh. A combination of multiple genres can also lead to great works like Attack on Titan or the Songs of Ice and Fire

If you mean whether it's possible to make a new movie without any idea that has been explored before, that's unlikely

For example, the fantasy genre has limitless possibilities as it's basically up to the extent of the writer's imaginations... (Unlike the fraudulent multiverse).

Unfortunately most fantasy shows/movies especially from Hollywood just rehash the same thing --- dragons, magic spells, fairies, goblins, vampires, etc

All of these fantasy/mythical creatures and powers were created by people, why can't others invent new ones?

Lol... Funny enough its one of my fave animation franchise. It's mostly dumb but I guess it's one of my guilty pleasures. I know it's hardly got any plot but I enjoy the fun and entertainment it gives me.

I needed it to wash off the morose content I've been watching the past few days. It was just the reset I needed.

It's a billion dollar franchise na. And people seem to love it as all the movies in the IP averages $900mn worldwide. So Universal ain't stopping from churning this out every two to three years. It's easily Universal's biggest cash cow alongside the Jurassic World movies.

This one has a chance of hitting a billion dollar too despite the middling reviews. So you'll see more of this.

Hence my last paragraph. Thousands of idea have existed that it has become so difficult to flesh out an entirely new one, but there is a way to creatively "rebrand" existing ideas to make them somewhat new.

However, like you have alluded, these writers would rather play safe and dance around the same idea for ages, leading to more garbage media out these days than actual good ones.

I mean, our imagination are literally limitless, it can't be that hard.

Yup, at the end of the day, it's a money making business and the astronomical bread in B.O numbers is all the motivation they need to keep going.

So, I was too tired to point out some other things in the movie.

1. In every Alien movie, there is usually a new type of xenomorph. Sha , it is understandable because the Alien DNA parasitically strong enough to mutate and overwhelm any other being's DNA.

2. Aforementioned final girl trope.

3. It's best to watch in a cinema that has great sound- IMAX? Because the sound gets loud at intense scenes.

4. Space.....I'm inspired by space. Maybe I'll give Joseph1832 a run for his money in poetry about space.

Hollywood has always been about playing it safe.
That is why we get constant reboots or revival of dead franchises to milk and squeeze them to the last drop...

Look at the superhero genre. most superhero fights in Hollywood come down to simple punching and kicking despite the vast powers of many characters....

There is always the issue that directors feel something is too bizarre for the but screen

Yep, you are right....... it's not that hard but it's not called the movie Business for nothing and new stories are always out but they don't take the spotlight the way existing IPs do. Audiences scream and beg for new stories but tends to disappear immediately they are out and the movie flops, the director pays for it in director jail. how on earth is this motivating for filmmakers?

When faced with original ideas in movies, the same people will call it boring. Most original ideas now do better in series because of more time to do world-building.

How many Nigerians went to watch bladerunner and its sequel? Even when inception came out, I watched it in the UK and came to Nigeria. It was as if I was talking gibberish when I was hailing the movie- until six months to a year later when shalaye masters went to download it.

As new technology comes out, there will be more original ideas but they will be chased cautiously. No investor/producer/director wants a box office failure.

If a movie fails, these same shalaye masters will come and be laughing at the movie. Can you imagine the basterds? That same shalaye goat that is asking for original ideas was hyping Barbie non-stop while not realising that the Barbie movie was not an original idea (as it is not the first Barbie movie).

True...True...

Indie filmmakers used to have stories closer to almost 100% originality far from the madness of blockbusters but the allure has always been low, because at the end of the day, they still use money to produce and not getting that investment back is bad business.

A24 used to be a haven for indie filmmakers, but even they are moving away from making many arthouse flicks, in favor of commercial flicks, just to stay in business.

Even the streaming/VOD pipeline seemed like a huge break for arthouse flicks but blockbusters are running away from long cinematic runs, and releasing earlier on streaming platforms and competing with them.

The biggest film playing right now is Alien Romulus, this film has been going on since the 70s, meaning they have been recycling it for 45 years!, this year alone, we have had a Kong movie, a Kung Fu panda flick, A Ghost busters flick, A mad max flick etc...zero new ideas, just throw in some woke nonsense and agenda, and call it a day. Some of these franchises should have been retired by now. I know the aim for these prod companies is to make money and nostalgic bait is a safe net for them, but i totally detest the state of movies now.

I feel your pain but Hollywood aren't the only ones to blame when the audience aren't there to holly up their wood especially when new stories are released.

It was when A24 started slightly shifting gears that I knew sh1t has hit the fan because frankly they weren't making any money. It's sad to watch art be devoured by corporate greed but it's still a business in a capitalist world at the end of the day

Say it louder. About 60-70% of movies with new stories flopped last year compared to existing IPs that were moderately successful, I was so mad when one of my favorites , The creator didn't even score but we swear we want new stories. Why won't Disney release toy story 100 or DreamWorks release Shrek 8 when audiences are flocking to go see those compared to "new stories"? Hollywood is barely scraping by even with existing IPs, investors are playing it safe with their money because d economy sef dey nack dem for head
