Nearly a decade after its much-anticipated launch, Addis Ababa's light-rail system is facing significant challenges, with only 15 of the original 41 trains still operational. The decline in service is attributed to a shortage of spare parts, inadequate maintenance facilities, and frequent power outages.

Ato Worku Desta, Deputy Head of the Research and Technology Department at the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau, confirmed that the city's rail service has deteriorated over time and failed to live up to expectations. To keep some trains running, damaged units have been cannibalized for spare parts, but this approach has proven unsustainable.

The rail system was part of a broader USD 14.8 billion loan-funded infrastructure initiative by China, which included the Ethio-Djibouti railway, airport expansions, and road projects. While initially hailed as transformative, the rail service has been hampered by poor planning and insufficient arrangements for maintenance, spare parts, and local expertise.

The entry of Dangote into the oil market is indeed a game changer.

There is no solution that can be merely evaluated as a wrong or a bad idea except tried or properly evaluated.

Government policies must first be enforced with the law to strengthen its adherence and there after, implemented to solve critical problems in the country such as the fuel problem.

Schools of thought believe the Government should handle government affairs and leave business of government to the private sector. This isn't a bad idea. Obasanjo probably saw a solution in this idea and encouraged Dangote and Otedola to buy up the refinery.

The government is an institution with limitations and the citizens must acknowledge it. Businesses, technocrats and passionate citizens should work with the government to help it.

How exactly is Dangote's refinery a game changer? It can be ... but is it? It has already gone into production ... what has changed? Is the cost of petrol lower at the pump? ... is the burden of subsidy being relieved and the money used to boost infrastructure? ... is our foreign reserves being boosted? If not...how is this a game changer?
Mass transit.... most cities abroad do not have a mass transit rail system. Does Lagos need one?...no doubt ...long overdue. Most cities have a robust bus system ...a car reaching bus network. Lagos needs to have both. No doubt the BRT lanes are important and should be there. But here is the writer claiming the lanes are underutilized therefore they should be turned into rail lanes. Why not shout for buses to utilize the lanes as planned? Why not have new paths for trains? Why not build new roads to ease congestion? The cities he visited and talk about have good urban planners with foresight Lagos has much room for new roads and rail tracks...why be fixated on the present only? New York City has a very good and extensive public transportation system to the extent that one does not need a car to get around . It is set up this way. Lagos has the population density that does require an extensive mass transportation system ... trains....buses ...and ferry. Do other cities have the density to follow Lagos? ...if not why should any other city in Nigeria follow ?...for bragging rights?...the same as building unnecessary flyovers? We need to plan accordingly to our situation and not just do copy copy .

This OP should be ashamed of himself. First his is not from Lagos state.

How would you compare Lagos state with other states in terms of development? Why not compare Lagos state with Rabat, Tunis, Cairo and Johannesburg? Which of the other states of Nigeria was the Federal capital and enjoyed the benefits of that status? Building the refinery in Lagos state was an afterthought. The original location was Ogun state.

All the states know what they should do, for your information and not Lagos state alone.

Are their resources the same? Why not compare the growth and development of Lagos with Kebbi, Yobe, Jigawa, Zamfara and Adamawa states?

What do you want to say about BUA’s ongoing 250,000 BPD refinery construction in Akwa Ibom state? What about the 20,000 BPD refinery in Edo state or Anambra state? What about the combined capacity 450,000 PH 1 & 2, and Warri refineries undergoing refitting? Are they not going to provide the same petrol needed? What’s the game changer with Dangote refinery?

Give people alternatives like I had in Santorini. Divert away from excessive consumption of fuel and use the money saved to further enhance the public transportation system. When it is well developed, restrict the number of cars in all the CBDs using plate number codes. That way, people will be forced to leave the cars behind at home and use the public transportation system

Yes, as it's done in Singapore. Also make parking along the streets illegal unless at designated spots or spots owned by the building owners as it's done in Japan. I'm glad the Lagos train system is being developed as nothing beats a safe, affordable, clean, efficient and fast train network system in a densely populated area. Lagos, being Nigeria's richest and smallest state, is best positioned to implement these policies and infrastructure.

Reality is always different from how you guys usually predict things, this is not video game and fantasy, will dividing the country change the evil and corrupt nature of Nigerians ? how will dividing the country suddenly make Nigerians to change from their corrupt and greedy lifestyle ? Corruption, greed and selfishness are the core problems of Nigerians, it is what gave birth to the corrupt system we are using in Nigeria. Corrupt , greedy and selfish people can't create a fair and development oriented system, they will design something that they can exploit and something that suit their corrupt, greedy and selfish lifestyle.

Lagos don't have to convert BRT lanes to rail lines as each system is important. Perhaps, the advocacy should be on improvement, not eradication. After all, there are some couple of LRMT rail lines already planned to run inbetween the highways alongside vehicles, including the BRT. Perfect example are the BLUE LINES, about-to-commenced GREEN LINE, and the MONORAIL in the pipeline. So, BRT and Laswa LAGFERRY are systems that must not be sacrificed so as to encourage multiple options like the article claimed essential.

A game can only be changed if you give it time to work. It's barely a year since Dangote refinery began it operations. Judgments cannot be made yet.

The limitations that citizens must acknowledge are the facts that (1) the Government has limited resources (finance) for its high population. (2) the country has low social development such as poor education which affects the population and in effect, leads to a delinquent population that create risks such as crime and corruption. These limit government's functions.

Businesses, technocrats and passionate citizens should help the government in areas of expertise where the government lacks. The government neither knows it all nor have it all and may be required to seek partnerships and support from these groups. The citizens who are passionate enough can help by participating in passive governance and also adhering to the rules of the land such as payments of taxes and obeying basic laws and orders.

Someone got supplied crude oil in naira , refined it and instead of selling to the public, afterall the market has been deregulated.

The smart cunny simply supplies the NNPC with his petrol to determine price

In essence DANGOTE refinery never solved the problem

It simply went round the problem.

Now just like cement, DANGOTE is simply using NIGERIA NATURAL resources to run a business and make money for humself and his family.

Like I am sure everyone knows today if DANGOTE refinery burnt down and petrol stopped coming out, NNPC would simply go back abroad to import petrol for the country and sell at the same price DANGOTE refinery produced his.

SO WHAT EXACTLY was the point of the refinery

All the subsidies being paid to the different corrupt people is now simply being paid to DANGOTE.

Nigeria now has functional refineries, a Petrochemical plant, and a fertiliser plant in Lagos, a game changer. Nigeria now has two major petrochemical hubs, Lagos and Onne (River State)
