From a frustrated Kenyan living in SA.

I did tell everyone here that Ruto was a disaster in and of himself.

''In the early 90s, Moi’s despotic regime crushed our resistance with unprecedented brutal force- Ruto ni mwanafunzi haswa! Frustrated and utterly hopeless, I left Kenya at the age of 20 to chase the dreams my country had failed to deliver—I hear you, Gen Zs.

I traveled to South Africa on a one-way ticket, bright-eyed and bushy tailed, with nothing but 15K and my mother’s unwavering support. I hustled—kuosha vyombo, braiding hair, and trading curios—just to pay my way through my studies at the University of Cape Town. It was difficult living away from home with limited resources. So Ruto, stop this modern-day slave trade disguised as job creation for the youth. Our communities thrive better together, and there is plenty within our borders if you would just stop stealing the entire country.

I have lived in South Africa for 30 years, witnessing this great nation rise to glory, only to later unravel into chaos. Yet, we still stand because the constitution reigns supreme and the rule of law remains the bedrock of our society. However, there is still much room for improvement.

Getting back to my thought process... Under the leadership of Nelson Mandela and the formidable Thabo Mbeki, South Africa rose from the ashes of apartheid. The Black middle class flourished, long-neglected communities finally gained access to basic services, and justice became accessible. Social welfare reached the most vulnerable, affordable healthcare was within reach, and it felt like anything was possible. The constitution wasn’t just a suggestion—it was implemented, albeit imperfectly.

Then, Stage Left, Zuma entered. Corruption, impunity, greed, and selfishness devoured everything South Africa had built. In collusion with his Indian cronies, the Guptas, Zuma dismantled the economy over his '9 wasted years.' Today, South Africa is trapped in dysfunction. Clean water and sanitation have become luxuries, electricity is expensive and rationed, and the Rand is in free fall. Youth unemployment is at a crisis point, xenophobia is tearing apart communities, and local industries have collapsed. It’s a long, sordid story, all rooted in the rot at the head—a moral decay that has permeated through every facet of our society.

I now watch with horror as Kenya, my mother land, treads the same doomed path once again— as if we learned nothing from the mkoloni’s installation of Kenyatta I, and the subsequent Moi and Uhuruto regimes that Kenya’s electorate willingly endorsed. And now, we find ourselves with this cretin, Ruto, displaying the dangerous tendencies of notorious dictators like Idi Amin, Mobutu, and Bokassa.

He is also following Zuma’s playbook, with his own Adani playing the role of the notorious Gupta Indian oligarchs. This is no ordinary corruption—this is state capture by force. It’s the systematic dismantling of Kenya’s future, and if we don’t act swiftly and decisively, we are barreling towards anarchy—if we are not there already.
I am angry because I know Kenya’s potential, and it is slipping away under our watch. I am angry because I’ve seen this playbook before, and I know exactly how it ends. But more than anything, I am hopeful—because Kenya’s youth is woke, politically engaged, and fired up to reclaim the soul of our Nation- Ndugu Zetu, mumeamka.

The South African youth uprising of June 1976 forever altered the course of this country’s liberation struggle. Their clarion call, Amandla! Awethu!—Power to the People!—resonates through history. And now, 48 years later, in June 2024, the Kenyan youth made their mark in our history books. You are exactly who you think you are: the leaders of Kenya’s 3rd liberation struggle.

To the youth—I urge you to remember, we the older generation are not your enemy. We stand with you, ready to support this movement with our skills, resources, and experience. Battles are fought not only in the streets but in offices, courtrooms, oceans, and across the diaspora. #TaifaMpya ni yetu sote.

To the older generation—we must resist the temptation of retreating into the "mwizi wangu" tribal cocoons that have long defined our politics. It’s time to wake up and focus on midwifing a #TaifaMpya that works for all 55 million shareholders. Competence, servant leadership, and respect for the rule of law must guide our choices for leaders in 2027.

I am angry but hopeful- Kuna Mpango''

I think we finally have a video that aptly covers the world-class amenities at Konza Technopolis. The laying of horizontal infrastructure is finally done at this Smart City - smartest in Africa. Some of the advanced features shown in this excellent video include; automatic waste management through vending machines (street garbage is automatically sucked into a tunnel for instant incineration and/or recycling), humongous utility tunnels crisscrossing the city, smart poles (panic/emergency buttons on every street light and smart sensors and cameras connected to fast-speed wifi for monitoring the weather, traffic, and security), advanced water/sewer management system, underground powerlines, drone corridor, etc etc. The second phase has kicked off in earnest which is the building of vertical infrastructure, i.e buildings.

That’s the thing most everything is included though the list above posted has been modified and not totally accurate. It’s like how a single ship class can be filed differently depending on what country it’s in. In one country it’s a destroyer in another it’s a frigate, corvette, etc.

The list goes by what’s filed by the individual country which can count everything from large International Airports to micro landing/takeoff strips that see little to no actual use.

It’s why countries like Bolivia are listed as having more Airports than Japan or Zimbabwe having more than Turkey.

That definitely includes small airstrips and private airstrips. National parks in Kenya have lots of those, plus private ranches like Vipingo Golf Course have their own. JKIA & Wilson - Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Isiolo, and Lamu are the major airports in Kenya. The rest are small airstrips with several in each county.

CEMENT: Demand soars amidst price hikes, declining purchasing power

Financial Vanguard findings on the operating environment of the companies indicated that macroeconomic headwinds such as inflationary pressures, foreign exchange volatility, rising cost of production, and declines in purchasing power, have escalated since the beginning of this year.

But the cement producers have recorded superlative financial performance within the same period, indicating that a section of the consumers are still retaining strong purchasing power enabling them to spend beyond basic necessities of life such as food.

Domestic prices of cement have remained elevated with retail price ranging between N7,400 and N8,000 per 50 kg bag up from about N6,000 market average a year ago, reflecting the broader macroeconomic challenges.

But at the backdrop of the challenges demand for the product considered non-essential for the larger populace in Nigeria, has continued to rise.

Volume of products sold recorded significant increases across all the leading producers with the sector leader, Dangote Cement Plc, already growing volume by 3.8 percent in the six month period.

The combined outcome of the rising volume of sales and the product price increases during the period was a massive growth in net sales revenue for the major cement producers which rose by 76.6 percent in the first half of the year (H1’24).

The biggest industry player, Dangote Cement Plc, recorded overall sales volume increase of 3.8 percent to 13.934 MMt in H1’24 from 13.420mmt in the corresponding period of 2023.

But its Nigeria operation saw a huge 10.93 percent volume increase to 8.994MMT from 8.108mmts in H1 2023.

The local cement market continues to exhibit robust demand, fueled by increased construction activities from ongoing housing developments and road infrastructure projects, driven by significant public and private sector investments.”

Going forward, they said: “Our outlook on domestic demand remains buoyant, bolstered by the FG’s increased capital expenditure allocation of N13.77 trillion, with an anticipated implementation rate of 37.8%. “Consequently, we project sales volume growth of 3.1% y/y for Dangote Cement, 10.4% y/y for Lafarge Africa, and 21.7% y/y for BUA Cement in 2024.”

They stated that the producers would take advantage of the anticipated ramp-up in the FG’s capital expenditure allocation from the various ongoing construction projects nationwide and investments in private construction activities, especially in urban areas, to grow sales volume coupled with an upward revision in prices.

Chinazom Izuorah, Senior Associate, Parthian Partners, said: “Looking at recent developments, policy pronouncements and government initiatives, even without insight into partnerships or collaborations between these firms and contractors, we can ascribe these volume increases among the cement manufacturers to the present administration’s capital projects.

As for Tinubu, remember I was always saying it here in 2022 in my argument with rvp2018 that removing subsidy is not really a big issue but we have to always be careful with policies around currency.
This in my opinion is the major thing that should be looked into more critically in the Tinubu Government. No palliative can cure the headaches that come with a wobbling currency.

As a Nigerian living in India for past 25 years ,

I can offer insights into Adani group of companies .

Adani knows the mumu button of all indian politicians and parties of whatever ideologies ,like Dangote . He is very close to ruling party of India and it also explain his meteoric rise . He controls majority of new Ports and Airports in India .

A case in point is in South western state of Kerala which is ruled by communists, a very ideological opponent of right wing party of Modi and who shouts Adani this and that, like Kenyans are doing now , The end result is the communist government opened fire on protestors and killing them and handing over the project for Adani to complete .

Adani will build world class ports and aiports and that not a question , But the question is what is after it .

Adani business model is so much similar to the model employed by Chinese companies operating in Africa and Korean Chaebols .

You bribe everyone from Ruling party down to opposition parties including fringe parties .

The only good thing about Adani,Chinese, korean batch is they spend 50 dollars and extract 100 dollars and Infrastructure will be build , Unlike western influenced batch like Dangote,Chagoury etc ,who will build for 10 dollars and extract 100 dollars in the process .

Whichever way you look the corruption is on . embarassed embarassed embarassed

Nigeria was spending too much to defend the naira. Did you think it would have been better to keep borrowing to defend the naira?

Kenya's problem on the other hand seems to be their craving for debts
