"I was hungry" - Man says as court sentences him to six months imprisonment for stealing three yam tubers in Osun

An Osun State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Osogbo on Monday, September 23, sentenced an aluminium worker, Sunday Ejoh, to six months imprisonment for stealing three tubers of yam.

Ejoh who appeared before Magistrate Mr M. Olatunji, had been arraigned on one count of theft of the yam, valued at N3,000.

Giving the facts of the case, the prosecutor in charge, Mr Jacob Akintunde, said, “Ejoh, on September 22nd, 2024, did steal three tubers of yam valued at N3,000 belonging to one Oluwole Durojaye.”

The prosecutor stated that the stolen tubers, a cutlass, and a pair of slippers were recovered from the defendant.

He added that the offence committed was contrary to and punishable under “Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Law of Osun State, Nigeria 2002.”

The artisan, who had no legal representation, pleaded guilty, stating that hunger had compelled him to commit the crime.

"I was hungry, and I have a family," he told the court.

Delivering judgment on the matter, Magistrate Olatunji found the defendant guilty and subsequently sentenced him to “six months’ imprisonment with an option of a N25,000 fine.”

Olatunji also directed that the stolen yam should be returned to the owner.

So it’s easier to sentence one for stealing 3 tubers of yam because of hunger to those that loot in billions and rip the public off good standard of living…. undecided

Without the option of fine, I would have opined that this was a miscarriage of justice. 6 months in prison for 3 tubers of Yam is too much.

Buhari stole billions of dollars with his Fulani brothers and yet he is free in Daura with no measure of punishment. In Nigeria, there is no consequences of bad behaviours. Just few tubers of yam because he is trying to survive, the judiciary suddenly developed the tentacle to administer justice to bad behaviours while Buhari live with his loots in Kastina

Well said. They sold their vote for Peanut; they must face the hard truth and the consequences of their actions. In the future, fight for the right to vote out corrupt governments and die of hunger.

Nigeria and it's failed Judicial System...he was without a lawyer and his case is a very minute one. He stole 3 tubers of yam worth 3,000 and would be jailed for 6 months?

I no blame the judge...na the people wey carry that case go court I blame.

If the man try commiting suicide, you will all call him weak and cowardy. For those judging him, may you not be in his shoes where you see your family famished and kids helpless, Especially with a nagging wife.

The economy is really crazy. I don't blame folks trying out suicide as what Tinubu is dishing out is slow and painful death that comes with emotional and mental shatter.

I don't support crime in any guise.
But the judge should have given him 10 tubers of yam with a stringent warning that if caught in future in any crime again, he would be sentenced with a triple punishment for the crime.

Some crimes can be permanently solved by pulling people out of poverty because, about 80% of recorded crimes are poverty induced while the rest are greed induced.

My one pence though!

This is the height of wickedness.

While some people are using pen and papers to siphon the destiny of our people.

I dont blame the magistrate or the judge...the law is the law but I ask,why is the law lenient and less harsh to those stealing in billions?

And now that criminals are being elected in to offices...they are going to be making laws that can only suit their criminal organisation.

Election truly has consequences.
