Nigerian Bar Association Seeks Investigation Into Bobrisky Bribery Allegations, Cautions Nigerians Against Hasty Judgment

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has urgently called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate serious allegations that some of its officers received ₦15 million from Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky.

This comes in light of allegations that a convict paid a bribe to serve his prison sentence in a private residence rather than in a correctional facility.

However, there are claims that a bribe was demanded in exchange for a government pardon.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), President of the NBA, emphasized the need for a thorough and independent inquiry involving the Attorney General of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Furthermore, the NBA addressed the reputation of Femi Falana (SAN), a highly respected legal practitioner known for his integrity and commitment to human rights.

The NBA urged the public to avoid jumping to conclusions regarding his or anyone else's alleged participation in these matters, stressing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the legal profession during this investigation.

The statement reads, "The investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should determine whether or not there was any financial inducement by Bobrisky or anyone on his behalf in exchange for the dropping of money laundering charges against him. Any person found complicit must face the full weight of the law.

"The NBA acknowledges that all individuals and institutions accused are entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. However, we insist that a swift and thorough investigation be carried out to establish the truth. If any public official is found culpable, appropriate legal actions must be taken to hold them accountable.”

Osigwe, therefore demands that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) not only respond to the allegation that Bobrisky did not serve his time in a correctional facility but also provide transparent details on the conditions under which Bobrisky served his sentence.

He noted that if it is proven that he was allowed to serve his sentence outside a correctional facility, in breach of the law and a court order, the officers and officials responsible must be prosecuted and dismissed from service.

It said, "We also call upon the Attorney General of the Federation, EFCC, and the Office of the National Security Adviser to independently investigate allegations that a convict paid a bribe to be allowed to serve prison time in a private residence instead of in a Correctional Facility, as well as the allegation that a bribe was demanded in exchange for a government pardon.

"The suggestion that convicts can freely serve their time in private residences and potentially procure a pardon by paying a bribe undermines the very foundation of our criminal justice system and erodes public confidence in the system.

"We believe that this investigation will provide the individuals named in these allegations the opportunity to clarify their roles (if any) in this matter. If these allegations are found to be true, it would not only mock our correctional system but also serve as a wake-up call for necessary reforms in our prosecutorial and correctional processes."

Osigwe stated that the NBA shall appoint eminent members of the legal profession to monitor the situation and ensure that due process is followed.

He said, "The NBA is especially concerned with the allegation involving one of Nigeria’s foremost legal luminaries, Femi Falana, SAN, and his son, Folarin Falana, Esq. (aka FALZ). The video claims that Mr. Folarin Falana reached out to Bobrisky, and his father, Femi Falana, SAN, allegedly discussed the possibility of applying for a presidential pardon for Bobrisky. We note that Femi Falana SAN has denied this allegation.

"It is important to note that the law allows convicts to apply for a presidential pardon under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). This provision empowers the President to grant pardons to individuals convicted of offenses, subject to certain conditions and upon the recommendation of the Council of State.”

The NBA acknowledges that applying for a presidential pardon is a legitimate legal recourse available to any convict, as stipulated by law.

However, it is crucial to clarify that such a process must follow due procedure and be devoid of any form of influence peddling or unethical practices.

According to Osigwe, Femi Falana, SAN, is a highly respected legal practitioner known for his integrity and long-standing commitment to human rights and justice.

He said Falana has denied the allegation against him. The Nigerian Bar Association urges the public to refrain from making premature conclusions regarding Mr. Falana’s or indeed any person’s alleged involvement in these matters.

The Nigerian Bar Association reiterates its commitment to upholding justice, fairness, and the rule of law. We will continue to support all efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in our prosecutorial, law enforcement, and correctional systems.

"We also call for calm and restraint while investigations are carried out, and we assure the public that we will monitor these investigations closely to ensure they are conducted in a transparent and unbiased manner," Osigwe added.

Hope them know that we all know that the cross dresser had a special arrangement. Nobody could say that the man woman was in the same prison with him her. I knew something wasn't right but Nigerians are possible people, they can make senseless thing look OK.
To be fair he she didn't deserve to go to prison in the first place. I don't hate him just that he should keep his life style private. To say a lawyer don't know anything anything about it is just impossible.

Case will die a natural death..

There is no case here, even if Bob didn’t stay in prison, the document shows she stayed and no court will listen to an audio which bob can claim was an AI or was playing prank on the guy.

VDM should have consulted with an expert lawyer before going public.

It’s like the case of Rivers PDP law makers, everyone saw they decamped on video , but there are no documents, even if they were, Wike must have ordered Rivers APC to destroy the documents.

You wan to pin down a SAN? To earn SAN isn’t the same way as growing social medial followers.

If VDM doesn’t apologize within 24hrs, he better go and do Go Fund Me to hire a SAN as his defense counsel against Femi Falana.

Abi na prophet Jeremiah pray VDM enter Falana trap ? cheesy

Body go tell am sha

I was just filled with awe the way Nigerians were just running their mouths celebrating very dark man, whose day's would soon be dark in a cell. Every alleged allegations must be proven and substantiated in Court...not the gallery of public opinion.

VDM made valid points as reasons for this expose and I respect him for that.
If nothing is done a jailed corrupt politician could still commit money laundering and fraud. And a jailed murderer could still arrange a killer squad and commit other crimes while in jail and they will never be prosecuted for it since they are in jail as we thought and not a separate apartment.
And whistleblowers who had exposed this two when they were prosecuted in court are just living corpses

To start with, many persons are hypocrites including the boy, VDM,

1) Why did they sentence BOB for what almost all Nigerians have done?!

Why were so many others pardoned while he was made scapegoat for almost a normal thing in Nigeria. Those activist didn't see that.

2) VDM made a big blunder- he was just a random boy going about his cloutchasing and as characteristic of Nigerian youths (dignifying random people), he got famous. However, he started using it for the right course though selective witch hunt.

3) He accused Falz and Falana. There was an innuendo. He later made a video yesterday night stylishly begging Falana.

4) Nigeria is a corrupt Nation. What VDM has started is a good course. It would reset a lot of things. He should just restrict his youthful exuberance to low oppressive people jn the society if he doesn't have the wherewithal to chase big cases. He lacks legal knowledge of how things should go.

Even if Falz and Falana worked on the case, they are lawyers and they are known for that.

What’s there to investigate? The people involved have already recounted or blamed the fake news media for whatever. Bob says it was fake. It’s one’s word against another without witnesses.

Folarin Falana said the audio with Bobrisky is real but he told Bob not to pay.

When you reach poor man tentacles will rise.. All the big politicians stealing from this country in different ways through subsidy and inflated contracts, NBA and efcc are seeing them.

The rule of law is now to be tested on bobrisky.. it looks like the bane of our problem is accidental value and not what we think it is.

They should start with the judges who pronounce judgments we know isn't true.

As for Bobrisky's allegation, a man called into a program on Inspiration fm, Lagos yesterday and said something similar happened to him as far back as 2014. In essence, it isn't a new practice.

You guys are under estimating VDM. This case will only die because the government will want to use it to silent a particular party involved and also to cover up for one anti corruption agency.... Allegedly o
