Community kicks over alleged diversion of Lagos-Calabar Expressway

The Okun Ajah Community Development Association, the apex body of indigenes and residents of Okun Ajah in the Eti Osa Local Government area of Lagos State, has raised the alarm over an alleged diversion of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Expressway into their community.

The community alleged that the road was diverted from the 2006 Gazetted Coastal Road Alignment to favour some set of persons.

The body in a statement sent to PUNCH Metro on Tuesday and signed by its chairman, Isah Noibi and secretary, Yusuf Odunuga, called for an investigation into the matter.

While noting that the people of Okun Ajah were aware of the intention of the Lagos State and Federal Government to construct a coastal road nearly 30 years ago, they stated that the community did not encroach on the Approved Establishment Right of Way for the road.

The statement read in part, “We are writing this open letter because the people and residents of Okun Ajah are being threatened with an illegal demolition of their properties, lifelong investment, houses, and estates, just for being law-abiding.

“The Okun Ajah town in Eti Osa Local Government area of Lagos State is an ancient town with a history going back to over 500 years ago. The population of Okun Ajah comprising both indigenes and residents is substantially large and diverse

“The Okun Ajah people, most of whom are law-abiding people, became aware of the intention of the Lagos State and Federal Government of Nigeria to construct a coastal road nearly 30 years ago. We are also aware that the Coastal Road Alignment was gazetted and approved in 2006, while Your Excellency (Bola Tinubu) was the Governor of Lagos State.

“Multibillions of naira worth of investments of Nigerians in the Diaspora and lifelong investment and retirement plans of the Etisalat Workers Cooperative Society, Addax Petroleum Workers Cooperative and Seplat Energy will be affected by the diversion of the road.”

The group however alleged that the supposed favoured group of persons purchased lands on the coastal road to influence the diversion to other areas of the community that did not encroach into the Right of Way.

The community also clarified that no telecommunications cable was present in the community, which was said to have warranted the diversion.

“For clarification purposes, the Okun Ajah Alignment is at chainage 16+500 – 17+500, while the MTN cable is at chainage 24+500, which is at ShopRite Road, Okun Mopo about seven kilometres away from Okun-Ajah “They, therefore, appealed to the President to kindly direct the Minister of Works to comply with the 2006 Approved and Enacted Coastal Road Alignment and to stop further deviation from it,” the statement added.

When contacted on Tuesday, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Keisha, declined comments on the matter. “Direct your question to the Honourable Minister of Works, please,” she said

Have they not been compensated?

People are just greedy.

Lousy touts

That means those beach resorts on that Okun Ajah axis like, Barracuda beach, Redline beach , Atican beach, white deck beach and the over 20 beach resort on that axis will be no more like they did to Landmark beach good beach, sol beach and Oniru beach.
So no more good beach for Lagosians staying on the island

Something that'll benefit the community in the long-run. Most Nigerians have no foresight.

You think he didn't receive orders from Gbajabiamila and above ?

Are you a novice to think he's acting on his own in a project the President has special interest ?

Hmm...

When sane Nigerians raised issues with the way and manner the contract was awarded, apc empowered social media 1diots were busy insulting.

This is just a tip of the iceberg of the problems along the way. Key Issues that should have been well resolved before commencing the project would continue flare up.

The coastal road is being powered by greed, hence the rush.

I dont think it has to do with the ethnicity of those involved, if anything, i even feel its a padi-padi thing that makes him wanna leave the intial plan to divert the road into another

Exactly. And he's stupidly stoking ethnic tension. Is this the best Yorubas can do to get what they want? Incite the nation with ethnic noise?

More new and recent new beaches will come up when the road is done.

This time there will be no more demolition as the road will have been constructed and already under toll.

They should call Umahi to order.. If Igbo properties are encroaching on the coastal roads, then those propeties should be demolished because nobody asked them to acquire lands in mapped out areas in the first instance. He can't be trespassing on other people's lands because he wants to save his Igbo people propeeties that are on the right of way of the coastal highway. That's complete illegality that must not be tolerated.

Yorubas must wake up and stop the destruction of Yoruba properties on Yoruba soil while the Igbo Minister of Works continue to sabotage Government's project to favour his Igbo people. Governor Sanwo Olu should not sit down idle in Alausa and allow Umahi cause Yorubas to revolt in Lagos.
Enough is enough.

Tribalism wan finish you. Igbo man is your president.

When i see that even in 2024 there are many forests and vast areas of bush and trees in Lagos, despite how relatively small the state is,I begin to wonder with this claim that the Oku Ajah community has been existing for 500years,where there any inhabitants in these lands 200 not to talk of 500 years ago?
Unless they count animals and trees as inhabitants.
In that same Ajah,Badore axis, you would find bushes and forested areas with no sign of it being developed in the next 10years.So will they later come out in 10byears time to claim any such community has befn in existence for 500 years?
