Before people hit the streets the prices were crazy hitting as high as 2600 Naira/L. Economic activity was quickly grinding to a halt. You have to keep in mind that we import all our oil so high prices are expected but Ruto had broken all records.

They were rose in 1970s when expelled/restricted from DUkawallas - retail and wholesale - 1967 Africanisation - they went into manufacturing
They made huge fortunes in 70s/80s/90s - from manufacturing
And of course some joined public procurement and contracting.
Now they have been replaced by Chinese

The basic fact is the govt is cushioning the oil prices which is the definition of subsidy. The govt was just trying to save face because accepting fuel subsidies would paint Ruto in bad light after all the bravado. You really think we are all low IQ Sudis and Farouks. Tell that to the dogs. The Indians who are into manufacturing are well known and are very few. The Indians that Moi used to loot public resources are the ones I am talking about. The Kamlesh Patttnis and the Kettan Somaia's. These are people who were looting as much as half the economy and helping Moi stash the money overseas in the Cayman Islands like Ruto is doing now with Adani and Jayesh.
