The Federal Government has said it is considering the employment of 2,000 teachers per state annually to address shortage of teachers in the country.

Which sums to 74,000 in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to the Ministry of Education, the government was considering December 2024 as deadline for the implementation of the policy.

This was disclosed in a roadmap of the ministry which was obtained by Saturday PUNCH in Abuja on Friday.

Recently, Sunday PUNCH exclusively reported that 18 states of the federation failed to recruit teachers in five years.

This comes amidst the outcry over the shortage of teachers across the country.

The Universal Basic Education Commission has also lamented the shortage of teachers in public schools.

To combat the shortage, the Ministry of Education’s roadmap stated, “states to recruit minimum of 2,000 qualified teachers and certified by the TRCN annually; the Minister of State for Education to meet with the state governors and get their buy in.”

The ministry set December 2024 as the deadline for implementation of first phase.

The shortage of teachers is so serious in Nigerian schools.

Even Lagos state-owned public schools don't have enough teaching staff. They have not recruited teachers in years! Most public primary schools in Lagos are using non-teaching staff as teachers and they don't want to employ qualified ones cos they don't wanna pay salaries... This is why the quality of education in public schools is no longer what it used to be.

A lot of things are being swept under the carpet in this country and the failure of politicians-cum-government is really affecting the well-being of the country.

Teaching is an art. Recruiting more teachers is good. But having quality teachers through a well organised and well structured Teachers training institutes is even better.

You can be very good at a subject, but you lack the art of passing the message across. The way you teach a nursery pupil is different from the way you skill a secondary school pupil.

Being able to raise the standards in Teachers Training Schools, Nursing schools and overall radical improvements in the academic curriculums of our universities and polytechnics/college of educations, will impact the quality of the graduating students even better.

It's not possible for all teachers to be certified. Even in Uk and Canada, there's what is called uncertified or unqualified teachers and the pay difference is not that much. Every year, thousands of qualified teachers quit, so how so you want schools or government to cope with such shortages?

And pay them the peanut of a monthly salary that can’t sustain them for a week.
Re: FG To Recruit 74,000 Teachers by Kukutenla: 11:45am On Oct 14
If true, this will be good for teachers especially those underpaid in the private schools. I will advise them to quickly go get registered with TRCN so that they can get this opportunity if it presents itself. The loss of teachers will also make those useless private schools sit up and stop paying peanuts to their teachers out of wickedness
