Crypto is a gamble..a friend of mine bought 3 btc in 2013 it was a gamble and institutional investors had none....Once you become old money u become more cautious

1. early April 2013, the price per bitcoin dropped from $266 to around $50 and then rose to around $100. Over two weeks starting late June 2013 the price dropped steadily to $70. The price began to recover, peaking once again on 1 October at $140.

2. Bitcoin (BTC) price again reached an all-time high in 2024, as values exceeded over 73,000 USD in March 2024.

Tell me if it's not a better investment over time now if he was able to keep his 3 BTC, he will have over $200,000 USD in crypto asset by now. Consider the post and these BTC value now.
My point is not that crypto is not risky, government and company share are risky too. Devaluation of currency, inflation, country debt profile. Company collapse etc can turn your shares to dust. Institutional share is even more of a gamble as you are not a custodial of your investment, in crypto, if the value are falling drastically, you can withdraw asset or convert to a stable token. Everything is about our pool of knowledge.

As for me, I prefer crypto to company and govt shares anytime anyday.

Good day,
These could not be far from the real thing.
Your father has invested in a small share, whereas some investors are having 100k unit, 1mil unit etc.
How it work dividend is nothing when it comes to shareholding but buying & selling of it.
If you want to sell this 1050 unit now, you may sell it at #10k depending on the worth of Transcop share then.
Meanwhile, Transcop share as at today is about #11.05 per share.

I finally gave up on buying shares, when i saw an alart of the first bank I bought almost 20years ago..

Alert of 1k, N500, is that supposed to be money?

Anything that won't be physical investment that would yield return almost immediately, I'm not putting my money again

He didn't buy much shares to begin with, considering the price then in 2013 was just N1.65 per share (from a quick Google search) resulting in a total of N1732.5 for his 1050 shares. That seemed like a trial purchase rather than a solid investment for the future.
If he had put that money into crypto then I'm sure the return on investment would be in millions by now.

Millions or billions?

My point remains that shares is less profitable in Nigeria compared to other investments, read between the lines.

No reasonable investor will tie down a whole N4m down since 1999 or whatever year you are quoting till date .

Investments don't work that way. Only analysis does.

If only you know what N1M is then.

Let's assume in 2009, someone purchased 2,000,000 shares at the rate of N2. This will be a total of N4M invested.

In 2024 which is 15 years later, the shares is currently at N11.
2,000,000 share = N22M + those petty dividends they paid.

Looks like a good investment.

Let's look at what who held dollar would have made just by putting N4M into dollars in 2009 when dollar was $150.

4,000,00 ÷ 150 = $26,666

In 2024, $1 = 1650

$26,666 x 1650 = N43, 998,900 (that's roughly twice the amount from shares in that company)

What about who gambled on BTC?

In 2009 bitcoin was $0.10 cheesy

Just $1,000 would have given you 10,000BTC

In 2024, 10,000BTC = $672,344,400. grin grin grin

Only if we can see the future

It's still staring at us, btc will still make 10× in ten yrs time

You guys don't know the difference between shares and dividends, yet you rush to comment.

Dividends per share in Nigeria is usually between 1kobo to 2naira, and so, the total amount earned will depend on the quantity of shares the person is holding.

Even if Transcorp pay the highest dividends of 2naira per share, someone who's holding a total shares of just 1050 like the Op's Dad can't still hammer from it. He'll get only 2x1050= 2100 per year. And I'm sure Transcorp can even pay upto that 2naira per share.
Only Zenith, Gtb, etc, can pay upto that amount of dividends per share.

I was talking about the dividends in 13 years.

You're right sha. But how many people have that "free money" to invest in shares. I prefer landed properties, that one can yield profit even after one year, depending on the location.

You can never go wrong with land banking if you buy GENUINE ones. Cos it comes with problems too. It’s either omo-onile, Baale, Oba, state or federal government.

The moment that value skyrockets, attacks starts coming, if you don’t buy genuine properties. It’s scary out there.
