Award-winning stand-up comedian and actor, Bovi Ugboma, has weighed in on the roles of husbands and wives in families.

The actor was reacting to Kanayo O. Kanayo’s statement emphasizing men’s financial responsibility during a recent interview on TVC’s Your View.

Bovi acknowledged that culturally, men are expected to provide for their families, but also stressed the importance of empowering women to pursue their ambitions and become financially independent.

The comedian said if a woman’s passion drives her to provide, her contributions should be recognized and respected.

Bovi also highlighted the practical benefits of women’s financial independence, citing scenarios where a woman can support herself and her family if her husband passes away or leaves.

“You have to understand that even those of us who are providing, our egos are easily bruised, not to talk of you sitting at home and expecting her to provide,” he said.

“And it is the spiral effect that is the issue. If you want to sit at home. If you want to do 50/50 with your wife, do it in peace. But understand that there are effects for your wives providing for you.

“Generally speaking, man is the provider. However, if the passion of a woman has pushed her to a level she can provide, you must recognise that power in the woman.

“I like a man who provides. That is what is cultural. If your woman is ambitious, then you have to find the middle ground. I provide everything in my home.

“Personally, a man should provide for his family. I also believe in today’s world, a woman should be encouraged to chase her dream.

“And if those dreams make her economically powerful then it is welcome. If a man dies what happens to the woman when she is not economically powerful? And if a man chooses to misbehave and say leave my house, what happens to the woman?”

Bovi is married to Kris Asimonye Ugboma and they have three children.

It is sad that we women don't want to provide. We just want to sit and collect yet we turn around and insult those men that struggle daily to meet our needs.

God bless Bovi.

We women should do better.

In this present day Nigeria, investing in a girl who is not your wife, sister or mother is a sign of mental instability.

Most modern men know this, including the barely educated. Those days of the woman in the kitchen and the man in the office died with Boomers. Gen X and below know two partners build a home.

Women are generally stingy with their resources. As a man, do not pray to be in a situation where your wife is the provider or where you have to depend on your wife. It never ends well. Yes, there are exceptions no doubt but in a vast majority of cases, it'd not augur well. While I am not averse to women making own money, as a man, make sure you're constantly developing yourself so that you can be in a position where you never run out of money. Develop yourself to an extent where you can always provide value. What some men do is stop developing and prioritizing themselves and instead focus on their spouse. They prioritize the ambitions of their spouse. Some will even expend all their savings to sponsor their wife's ambitions all in the name of being woke. I have a friend who is earning moderate salary but is borrowing money everywhere including from me to fund his wife's master's program in the UK with the hope that when he gets to the UK, his wife will be the provider. Till today, he has failed to return the total amount he borrowed from me. I have made up my mind not to borrow him any dime as. I have dropped subtle hints to this guy just to make him realize the path he has chosen is risky and urge him to instead spend the money on himself to acquire advanced degree that might position him to earn more or relocate. but i guess love is blind and experience they say is the best teacher. Each time we talk, its always about what his good for his wife and never what is good for him. He will keep emphasizing on how his woman will take of the family when he gets there. I have rest my case. Different strokes for different folks. It may well turn out to be a good decision for him. Life's never a straight line. But that's a risk I personally will not take.

As African men, It is our pride to provide for our family and I wear that responsibility with pride, the same cannot be said of women. They are mostly selfish and stingy regardless of how rich they might be. Statistically speaking, most charity work is done by men.

Personally, I work really hard to make money and provide for my family. I also do not lose sight of taking care of myself while at it - very important.

Yes, man is supposed to be the undisputed breadwinner and provider...!

But, how does a woman simply fold her hands and do nothing?!! How can any woman not have her own livelihood?!!

Like how now?!!

How can you be in a union and can't support the man in anyway?!!

A human Liability is worse than a disease!

The comments on this post is disturbing, because Nigeria women with all their wahala have been running homes since the time of old. Our mothers invested all their money on us, like, we are their only retirement plan.

But almost every corner I turn I see women hustling; white collar jobs, blue collar jobs, hawking under the sun, selling in shops or in the market. Where are they keeping all the money they're making if men are the sole providers as they claim? A lot of homes are being held together by the efforts of the wife, some wives are the sole providers yet cover up for the husband by saying he's the one providing. Gow are they appreciated? Constant bickering, nagging and wailing by idiotic entitled men who believe women came to the world to please them. That's why I don't feel sorry for them anymore whenever they're given men's children as theirs, majority of them are useless and don't deserve any loyalty.
