How is it an insult? You are going into a foreign land and English is one of the major global languages. Ok assuming you get to a foreign land and they ask you what is your mission in the country but you can't respond and then they put you in prison, then you will be sending us videos from the prison, shouting racism, black life matters etc |

This issue got exacerbated when Buhari took over. They realised that our president couldn't even speak clearly in English so hoe can you the ordinary citizen convince them you could speak better? 1 Like |

It isnt o. In a country where some tribes and zones have kept their people uneducTed to keep atracting inflow of funds, English language competency must be ascertained. 2 Likes 1 Share |

The truth of the matter is that, Many Nigerians don't know how to speak and write in English. On paper Nigeria is an English speaking country, but in reality Nigeria is not an English speaking country. Many Nigerians even the very educated onces can't pronounce English words properly, let's leave pronunciation at side, their written English is very bad. The issues I have with all these English people is that their English text exams are very expensive take the n Nigeria, the government should look into it. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Nuzo1: How about people from England who apply for Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Korean, etc visa? Do they pass some exam in Chinese? Russian? Japanese? You see, slavery and being controlled is now normal for most of you. The only thing you're at peace with is being thought of as inferior. You're taking about a culture that doesn't have any respect for anybody. Their language which we insist is better than ours has given them an unwarranted sense of superiority over us!! 2 Likes |

I use to think the same, that there's no reason for TEST but when I went out of Nigeria, I saw how limited our English level was. Chinese speak better English than us, Ghana speak better and all the east Africa countries. Why because they don't have pidgin or broken English. That's what is destroying our grammer 2 Likes |

Nuzo1: Just a test like IELTS is now the best criteria to measure one's intelligence ? Ask them, why English test if not for money. In school, people failed English and still graduated tops. Some Brits also speak bad English. It's all over the world. Don't the fooled & stop selling your country for 1naira. Go and read the meaning of Commonwealth before you justify your words. |

Thanos5555: Please, don't talk rubbish...! Leave this self hate abeg. Nigerians have problems, but get your facts right... Nigeria has some of the best speakers, writers, and readers of the English language among the nations on Earth. Our people easily score well in these proficiency exams with less prep time. No nation in Africa has better speakers and writers. That's why Nigerians are the most preferred for customer service roles abroad. Think before spewing or projecting low self-esteem. 1 Like |

Even when you are employed, more problem for you, your employer and the public. They can't communicate especially in health service. Imagine a nurse fi ding it hard to communicate with his patient or any health personnel Also all other countries do that. What made your country different? 1 Like |

Re: It Is An Insult To Ask Nigerians If They Can Speak English Before Granting Visa by Angelfrost(m): 3:08pm On Nov 02 |
descarado: Nothing... Except the fact that Nigeria is a colonial product of Britain, and English has always been the official language of the nation, taught and learnt from infancy. It's one thing to check the proficiency or ability of a Japanese, Chinese, Russian, or even Saudi Arabian to write or communicate in English since they have to adapt the language seeing as it's not their official language or it's foreign to them, but asking learned citizens in a nation where English is their main interacting language is weird and downright exploitative. By the way... Nigerians speak and write better English than the same UK citizens averagely. You should research this... They know how much they make from that exam yearly. |
