Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has urged northern governors to reconsider the region’s education system by adopting Hausa as the primary language of instruction in schools.

According to the governor, English should be taught only as a subject rather than being the medium of instruction in primary and secondary education across the North.

He stated: “Adopting Hausa as the language of instruction in northern schools could significantly enhance the learning experience, promote enrolment, and foster a deeper understanding of subjects among pupils and students.”

However, this proposal has sparked widespread concern among Nigerians from other regions. Many worry that such a move could negatively affect youth corps members who are posted to northern states for their mandatory one-year service under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

“And to One Nigeria, does this make sense? Abi, na another way of superimposing Hausa language on One Nigeria or making it a compulsory language for everyone? This topic has been raised in southwest for long by some language scholars that indigenous languages should be using to teach in the areas of mathematics and science for effective assimilation on our children at elementary level or secondary level I think but this was declined...

Language is key to development and progress but come to think of it, the way our leaders spoke English and their languages in the 60s and the way they speak now is a testimonial to learning your language first because politicians today can't speak both English and their language well. I agree that adopting Hausa as the primary language of instruction in northern schools is a great way to preserve cultural heritage and promote linguistic diversity. It can also enhance the learning experience for students in the region.
