Women groups and stakeholders in the country's political system have urged the National Assembly to expedite action for the swift passage of the Bill currently before it, which seeks to reserve political seats for women.

At a 3-day conference in Abuja, stakeholders said the speedy passage of the bill will assist in harnessing the potentials of women to enhance efforts to develop the country.

The conference organised by National Women Leadership Forum of Political parties in Nigeria (NWLFPPN) was in collaboration with office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Westminster's Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and UK International Development.

The event also featured public presentation of the National Women Leaders Forum's Operational guidelines.

The National Women leader of NWLFPPN Mrs. Amina Darasimi Bryhm said that the event is fundamental and critical in building women's confidence and making sure that the bill is passed.

She urged all political leaders both at the state and National levels to demonstrate capacity for gender inclusiveness by supporting and making sure that the bill was passed before the 2027 general elections.

"This event is very important as it brings together key critical stakeholders. The passage of the seat Reservation Bill Is a critical step towards ensuring that women are adequately represented in the administrative and political structures", she stated.

A resource person from Rwanda Mrs. Donna Karthazi gave an analogy on the efforts made in advancing the participation of Women in politics and governance in her country.

She said it took a concerted effort, intentional approach and holistic support from all stakeholders in Rwanda to achieve the milestone. She went further to say that Rwanda has about 45 percent women representation which is much larger than what Nigeria has.

An activist and former Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, Mrs Ene Obi frowned at what she called intimidation and humiliation meted to a member of the National Assembly, Sen. Natasha Uduaghan by the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio. She decried the constant discriminatory actions against women by the Senate President and hinted that women will not take it lightly.

The Deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Kalu who sponsored the seat reservation bill and still championing the special seat bill appealed to women to always embrace dialogue at all times.

He acknowledged that the level of women representation in the Nigerian Parliament isadopt persuasion abysmal and unbearably embarrassing compared to other African countries, including Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa etc.

He advised that the women should approach rather than protest to achieve their political aims

The national assembly should fling that useless bill out of its windows immediately. Women always like getting effortlessly things that men struggle to get and use gender to manipulate everyone. There are many women who are richer than men, so they should contest like every other man.

Today, you can never see one NGO that empowers only men, but you see tons of them only empowering girls/women. There's even a women's ministry and no men's ministry. This was how the west started and women are practically are running their marriages and destroying homes.

Only very few women actually work for their success.

Over 80% are helped by men.

Reserving political seats for women is discriminatory based on gender.
In addition, if extra seats are created this would increase the cost of governance.
The bill should be thrown out.

What kind of nonsense bill is this? This gender just want everything to be given to them freely without any sweat, which is against equality and democratic norms.
Very soon, they will ask INEC to cancel elections for them undecided

I sincerely hope that this never sees the light of the day. The left is steadily making in roads into Africa. Eventually they may catch us sleeping.

This is a democracy, everyone should have a right to vote and be voted for. Seats should not be reserved for anybody of any gender.

This is a disastrous bill to pass

There they go again with their perpetual delusion.

Women want to be in politics and rub shoulders with men.

Women claim equality with men.

Women claim to be of same substance as men.

But women lack the capacity and ability to engage in politicking and draw voters to their cause.

Women want to be handed political power and positions on a golden platter. If they manage to get it, they then go on to disrespect their colleague men-politicians who got to the seats through doggedness.

This is nonsense.

Nobody should be given special treatment simply because they have a hole in-between their thighs.

Go out there and throw your heart in the ring. If you win, fine! If you don't win, you try again.

This is discrimination against the male folks.

If this rubbish bill scales through, a male senator actually has the right to berate a female senator because they didn't come through the same struggle.

This is absolute nonsense.

When u allow women into ur midst, get ready to entertain drama...I will keep saying it

Imagine Jesus had women in his circle of disciples, imagine d unending drama...Jesus will not even last a week bfr the Devil gets him

Keep women around but not within ur circle...they have a tendency to contaminate things thru their emotions and high level of entitlement

You have your point bro.

Women are not equal to men by any standard, going by natural rule. But to counter your argument, imagine putting some toddlers and adults in a space to compete for a balloon. You'll agree that the toddlers will definitely be outsmarted. Yes, it's often believed that women are the weaker vessels and deserved to be pampered. They came out of men because men were stronger.

However, it's expected that the respect and dignity of men are not to be trampled upon by women, to earn their place favour. It should be that with humility and submissveness, women who are not found wanting should be accorded with special treatment to encourage others. They are certainly not in the same league with their male counterparts.

Maybe because I am yet to have my morning coffee, I can't make sense of your submission. But I think @smartpolitician's position is correct: if you want a seat at the table, you MUST earn it. Otherwise, if it is given to you on a platter, no one will respect you. The women folks must develop thick skin and compete just as their male counterparts.
