But Zara and H&M aren’t designers. They’re not even mid range.

Why are sellers in Nigeria calling them designers and ripping people off?

Even Coach, Michael kors, Kate Spade etc that sell for around $300-$500 are not designers either.

I think they’re just misusing terms probably due to not understanding the fashion market. Then add greed and it becomes a clusterfk.

Honestly I don’t even know. Even the Gucci shoes I got off on sale cost me around 1000 usd for the two of them. The same shoes will probably be sold to me 10 million in Nigeria and will probably be fake 😂

Honestly, one of the reasons I will never return to live in Nigeria isn’t just about money. The quality of life for the money you earn is very low. In Nigeria, you’ll see rich people boasting with designer brands, using it to show that they have “arrived.” “Oh, I buy my clothes from H&M, I buy my clothes from Zara, I only wear originals,” and all that. But the funny thing is, those same designer clothes are very cheap here.

H&M, Zara, and other well-known brands are affordable, even for people earning minimum wage. If you want, you can buy designer clothes every month without breaking the bank. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, those same clothes will cost millions, and sellers will hype them up, saying they’re “imported.” The real joke is that when these brands go on sale, they’re discounted by 75-80%. You can get a nice designer T-shirt for about 5,000 pesos (around 8,000 naira) and quality designer jeans for about 20,000 naira.

What I don’t understand is that I had family members in Canada and the U.S. while growing up, and whenever they sent us clothes, they were always torn, tattered, and worn out. But now that I’m in Chile, if I ever travel back to Nigeria, even if I decide to go for second-hand clothes, I can easily fill up two Ghana-must-go bags with just 300,000 pesos worth of quality clothes. And yet, these same people will be telling us to stay back in Nigeria, claiming that “abroad is hard.” Well, I’m here now, and I can tell you abroad isn’t what they make it seem from Nigeria

it stems from a multitude of factors

the average nigerian does not even know what quality really is - it is more about ostentation.

what we call designers are basic streetwear. real designer clothing is not loud . it is understated and discreet

but what the average nigerian wants is a status symbol that tells people I am rich

because they are buying for ostentation, they dont even know what to look out for beyond 'this will pepper them'
and the sellers take advantage of this buy selling shit at high prices

the drop in the dollar has been very frustration because before now, i would just order most stuff from abroad and bypass these hustlers
because dealing with them is an exercise in aggravation

there is a so called luxury watch shop called time keepers. multipole branches in lagos. they profess to sell quality watches, but what they sell is clearly refurbished. years ago i bought a police watch from them and the strap peeled in a week. and i paid 50k for this watch in 2015.

there is a story i continue to tell about skechers. skechers are very tough and reliable shoes. and my daughter had a pair i got her for school. and one day when i was dropping her, a nice lady called me aside and said , very earnestly - these shes are designer sir, your daughter should not be wearing them like this - she should be wearing them once in a while to make them last. what likely happend is that someone had sold her a gummed pair of shoes which fell apart on use and gas lit her with the usual 'you did not manage the shoes properly'

then we have those ghastly 'upgraded' cars - where people take the body of 2015 car and put it on the frame of a 2010 car

The car own is funny here. Chile isn’t a rich country. It’s a middle income country and bros I am yet to see below 2018 cars on the road here. Used cars are banned in chile. You can only buy brand new or used within Chile. Due to trade agreements Chile has with countries like the USA, china, and the EU there are no import duties on cars here making Chile one of the cheapest places in the world to buy a car. My current car will probably cost 4 times the price it cost me to buy it here in chile in Nigeria. I don’t just understand what is going on in that country and everyone keeps on accepting it like it’s normal. Nigerians and Africans are just suffering for nothing.

I don't think they call them designers. I haven't seen anyone call them "designers" and that is why Nigerians into these designers would rather buy a fake Gucci bag than an original Coach bag. If there is anything they do, they talk down on MK and Coach a lot. Zara is worst. They put that one on the same level with Primark.

There is a page on Instagram that currently calls out Nigerian celebs for wearing fake. @t20luxury is the name.

Personally I think it is better to buy unbranded bags or any other good one than spend a lot to buy "original fake". They call it turkey.

Meanwhile coach leather is far superior to any of the products in the market today. Even compared to high end brands.

At bold I feel the same way too. I love designers when I feel like splurging. But sometimes the unbranded ones might have better quality. Especially if it’s something made with pure leather.

One thing that really amazes me about chile is the inclusion. Even at festivals and concerts, it exists. There’s someone there interpreting all the music lyrics to sign language.

One of my favorite things to eat in chile whenever I go to festivals. It’s called choripan. I prefer it to the more popular Chilean completos
Is this like chorizos stuffed inside pan?
Re: Memoirs From Chile by tensazangetsu20(m): 2:49pm On Mar 16
Geofavor:

Is this like Chorizos wrapped with "pan"?

Exactly that why it’s called choripan. It’s a cut between chorizo and pan. It’s originally from Argentina but it’s quite popular in Chile but you can only find it at festivals.

I know Chile, dude. Lived in the states for 5. I wanted to be sure, it is not "the" Chile - that scores an A1 for racism.

No bro .. just no. .. I mean Chile is so bad, you can't live Nairaland - and that saying good about Nairaland.

Re: Memoirs From Chile by tensazangetsu20(m): 1:36pm On Mar 17
I totally understand why so many men become red-pilled. Back in university, I was practically invisible to women, it was as if I didn’t exist. I remember mustering the courage to tell a Gabonese girl I liked her, and she hit me with, “What’s your like or love going to do for me?” I was so ashamed of myself.

I studied marine engineering at a maritime university, and if you know anything about that field, you know how tough it is to get a job without solid connections. Some companies would visit our school to recruit, but out of a class of 70, they’d hire maybe eight students. And, of course, those eight were the ones all the girls wanted to date because their futures seemed secure.

Then came life after university, and it was even more brutal. I barely had clothes to wear. Most of my trousers were torn at the back, and I just had to manage. I tried starting a business, but it failed miserably. At that point, it felt like all hope was lost.

That’s when I decided to learn coding, not because I had high expectations, but because I kept seeing ads during COVID: “Learn to code and work from home.” I figured I had nothing to lose. Little did I know that single decision would change my life completely.

I started struggling my way through, hustling on Upwork, then moving to Reddit, applying for jobs anywhere I could find an opening, and learning interview skills. Back then, people laughed at me, but little by little, things started improving. I began making decent money by Nigerian standards, but I refused to upgrade my life because my focus was on leaving Nigeria. Every month, I saved as much as I could while researching my best options. That’s how I discovered Chile, and once I had enough money, I left.

The beginning was tough, but looking back now, I’m so glad I made the move. The version of me that was once invisible to women now has them smiling at me and trying to talk to me all the time. But none of that matters because I only love one woman, and she’s the only one I want to be with.

Racism where. I have never experienced anything like that. Maybe it’s another chile in another universe.
