joseph1832: I had to do a double check cos from memory, I know it isnt IT or Fintech. It actually is agriculture Think I may have mentioned it at some point to disstroy. However his point still stands as IT is the second/third biggest contributor and the biggest in the service industry. https://www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/elibrary |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m): 12:50am On Mar 24 |
User09: It's the ICT sector. Not agriculture. ICT has been the biggest contributor to our GDP for years now. It's not the first time I have mentioned it on this thread. I did in late 2022 and 2023. I did not long ago when debating with some older seasoned economists. They were just as surprised too. I've been aggregating since 2021 particularly. Vital information when one is crafting a pitch deck for VCs and others. I posted exact links to several quarterly NBS reports to back up my claims. Please open several such reports for each quarter in the last two years even to compare sectoral GDP contribution. If the Nigerian government had its priorities right, since we are a mostly service economy and haven't laid the ground work to compete advantageously on the manufacturing front, we'd fund and craft policies which enable us operate better as a service economy. Similar to trade deals which enable India act as a gig economy for outsourcing to the West. You should see GDP boosts for India from the gig sector too. You'd be impressed. Similar to deals the Philippines has with Oceania countries like Australia and New Zealand. It's a gig economy somewhat too. The only other African country doing something close is Rwanda. And they don't even have the skilled labour like us. One of the reasons I was excited when Osinbajo wanted to contest. That's why I had I high hopes for Minister Bosun. I hope he still delivers. These are two of the people who demonstrably understand these issues. |

In January 2024, I stated something similar on this thread then went on to highlight these statistics. https://www.nairaland.com/7186774/epl-chatroom-all-discussions/4050#127981427 As you progress reading the page, you'd find other such references. DissTroy: Then in August 2023: DissTroy: Till date, at 18.7%, Nigeria still has that record for percentage GDP contribution from the ICT sector in the world. No country has matched or topped it. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by User09: 1:33am On Mar 24 |
DissTroy: No, its not Take it from me. I can even walk you through the calculation (You know what, I'll do it again for you). See image attached Its the same reason why i posted the link to the data. Again you need to know how these data are calculated to make these kinds of arguments 6 Likes

User09:Walk me through the calculation? LOL. I ts the same reason why i posted the link to the data. Again you need to know how these data are calculated to make these kinds of arguments Agriculture fluctuates just like others. IT combines with the financial sector, sometimes. For example, OPAY, Moniepoint, Flutterwave e.t.c straddle both sectors, and the GDPs are combined to be for total ICT. I don't know if you just read the overviews for each quarter or you're googling on the go for this argument, but every NBS quarterly report has about 34 pages detailing the calculations and explanations for the intersection or overlapping of sectors. You'd get it when you download the actual attached files which are PDFs and Google Spreadsheets. ICT has been our strong point for years now. ICT being a condensation of subsectors. And the Service supersector (if I'd call it that) has been driving our economy for years. Sometimes even up to 70%. Every NBS report states this much. Do way more than quick searches in the heat of the moment. I'm not googling on the go to debate this. My post history already shows I regularly and judiciously study these reports, not in the heat of arguments looking to one-up or have a gotcha moment. ![]() |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by User09: 2:56am On Mar 24 |
DissTroy: I'm not one to make up arguments for the sake of it. Not especially a field i'm well versed in. You are actually preaching to the choir in terms of reading the reports detail by detail The image I posted earlier was actually me going as granular as possible and I did the calculation myself for you using the same spreadsheet in the link I posted earlier. I didnt google it, Infact, you wont find that image anywhere else. Let me make it easy for you, there's been no quarter in recent times where ICT outpaced Agriculture. Point me to one, I'll be happy to retract but please be sure you can actually go detail by detail in terms of the calculation. Another error in your post - Nowhere is financial services sector combined with ICT for the sake of GDP computation, The two are quite distinct with varying levels of dependencies in terms of economic output. Doesnt matter if your post has stated it a thousand times in the past, It's still wrong today just as it was wrong those thousand times. 12 Likes 1 Share |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m): 3:10am On Mar 24 |
User09: Pages 18 and 20. I attached the Q3 NBS report PDF. EDIT: Nairaland rejected so I'd attach the link instead. https://www.nigerianstat.gov.ng/download/1241593 ___- Every time you read the overview, it reads thus: ICT (Telecommunications). Heck! Flutterwave, for example, isn't even a telecommunications company, but it straddles ICT as a subset and the Financial Sector. You know what, are Flutterwave, Opay, Moniepoint etc ICT or Financial Services companies? It's a simple A or B. But if they are both, you've answered your own quizzing. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m): 3:18am On Mar 24 |
It's just like when some economists argue production and then pigeonhole it as just manufacturing and/or agriculture. Yet in today's world, production as a term has expanded. AWS is a product and a service. ChatGPT is a product and a service. A product can be a digital one today. Palantir Technologies which are ranges of softwares and sytems to track terrorist activities are products too, and services. Meta, for example, fuses digital production given its suites of apps and softwares and technologies like React, and the services it offers. Many of you (and by 'you' I mean us) are still stuck in the classroom-taught somewhat outdated economic definitions and term delineations when the world has evolved past them, or expanded to accommodate more. Many sectors and niches overlap today. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by User09: 3:29am On Mar 24 |
DissTroy: I'm struggling here not to make you or your argument sound silly. But believe me, they are as nonsensical as they come. Do you even understand what GDP is ? and what it is calculating?. Do you even know what approach is being used to compute it and how different it is for each sectors?. Do you even know that for financial services - there's a standardized metric called FISIM, that's used which has no basis or origin in ICT activity. How the hell does economic activity within a small space like flutterwave and the likes account for a whole financial service and insurance sector. huh? You started out by saying ICT contributes the most, when pointed to your error, you are now saying, I should merge it with financial services - Because of some fintechs that doesnt even do 5% of what the big banks are doing in terms of economic activity so all should be classified as ICT. Guess what, even if both are merged, the 2 combined are still not contributing as much as Agriculture. Maybe you'll look for another wrangle this time or we can just agree to disagree. This is looking like a needless argument not worth my time 19 Likes 1 Share |

airmark: The bet wins when the team you play to win goes two goals ahead. The odds are usually lower than playing outright win. 2up or not is besides the point. There is also no better option. If he had won with 2up or any other option today, as long as he continues betting, he will lose it all. 99% of people who bet lose in the long run. It's just that simple. Stay away from gambling guys. 3 Likes |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 7:10am On Mar 24 |
Theflint1: Off the top of my head - mtn has switches, friendship centers, branches in every state in Nigeria. They have massive physical infrastructure. Support for these alone provides cash flow in the economy MTN directly employs 1900 people and is headquartered in nigeria telcos buy diesel, pay rent across nigeria, pay power bills, invest in pv technology Flutterwave employs 1028 people across 5 continents. No record of how many are based in Nigeria. As far as I can tell their office end in ikoyi lagos It is not clear if Flutterwave is headquartered in Nigeria or San Francisco. (tax tax tax) |

Theflint1: This is what happens when you debate with emotions and sentiments. The Ikot Ekpene Caro White ambassador cannot take correction. How can Nigerian ICT/fin tech dominate in Africa when Nigeria cannot even boast of 24/7 electricityââ Just today the Nigerian minister of power came out to tell us that Nigeria must learn power generation from Egypt, another BRICS member state. âEgypt has made remarkable strides in energy transformation, and we are eager to collaborate and learn from your expertise. Our goal is to ensure reliable, stable, and affordable energy access for all Nigerians,â he added. Me sha I just want make he explain how BRICS is failing because Nigeria is not yet on board. Na where I get interest be that. But what do I expect from someone who said that Russia depends on Israel for vegetables hence they will not counter Israeli national interest in the Middle East. Probably he was thinking that Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso are the BRICS member states in Africa. 19 Likes 4 Shares

Apostle Femi Lazarus has been vocal in recent times calling out âGospel Artistes â who charge humongous amounts to âminister â in churches . He recently projected on his churchâs screen ; a mail from a gospel artiste stating his terms of service for him to perform in a church and part of the terms includes honorarium of 10k USD , executive hotel suites for the artiste and his team , first class flight ticket for the artiste and business class flight ticket for his crew members , etc. Since Femi Lazarus started the callout weeks ago , Timi Dakolo has been subtly shading Femi Lazarus and questioning why pastorâs get to collect offerings , tithes , special donations , etc but they expect gospel artistes not to get paid . He even suggested that churches should rather use their resident choir if they canât afford the popular gospel artistes fees instead of the pastors whining online about the gospel artistes fees charged . Now Timi Dakolo has gone a step further by revealing that Femi Lazarus actually charges 150 USD per head for entrance into his international school of ministry . Dakolo queried why Femi Lazarus will charge others to teach them about the ministry/gospel of Jesus that should be free . He is saying if Gospel artistes are to be performing for free then pastors too should not be asking congregants to pay for any teaching whatsoever in the house of God. Below is link to Femi Lazarus school of ministry payment evidences posted by Dakolo. https://x.com/instablog9ja/status/1904094516426019126?s=46 If u ask me , I think Dakoloâs point of view is quite logical |
