Hello good people of nairaland.
I have an issue that needs urgent attention and will want your advice.
It is regarding inconsistency in the names on my documents with the names on my JAMB profile. All my documents including school portal has just two name i.e. without middle name, but JAMB has three.
I applied for change of names even before gaining admission into the university, but did not get a response from JAMB as I was supposed to. I applied for another change recently after my final exams (about a month ago) but I am yet to hear from JAMB and our results have been approved by the school's senate.
If I don't fix this, there is no way I am going for the mandatory youth service, nor be exempted and you know what that means.

I am thinking that, since WAEC has already been known not to change names and can not affect my going for service, should I change the names in my school to three before our results are ready, then get an affidavit to back my WAEC for future use or wait for JAMB's response which is possibly disapproval because they (JAMB) said they don't add or remove names again?

Or is it possible that having just two names on my WAEC certificate can jeopardize my chances of being employed in the future or maybe securing a scholarship?

@Gerrard59 and other knowledgeable and experienced nairalanders should please help me out.

Scholarship cannot be jeopardised because of a name. The koko is ensuring your name in both WAEC and the university's certificate (which would also reflect in your transcript) are the same. Since JAMB is a prerequisite for NYSC, you have to ensure the names are the same. My advice? Meet a notary to explain everything and effect a change of name. Get them published in newspapers (widely read daily).

But I am curious, why didn't you use the same in WAEC all through? The change should have been from there, not anywhere after.

Best wishes!

Actually, we started the creation of JAMB profile thing in 2017. So when registering, out of ignorance, thinking "JAMB is just for admission na", I decided to include my middle name, say, Adamu.

I applied for a change even before I was offered admission by both JAMB and my school, but did not get any response from JAMB.
Although JAMB asked us to upload our O-level result to help facilitate the admission, I did with mine that has just, say, "TUNDE Chiroma" and was offered admission with TUNDE Chiroma by school and TUNDE Chiroma Adamu by JAMB. I thought that since I have been offered admission, they have settled within themselves.

Now, I learnt I will have to remove Adamu from JAMB to be eligible for youth service. If I can do that, my problem is solved. But since JAMB is saying they don't add or remove names, I can add Adamu to my school and NIN to make me eligible for youth service at the detriment of my WAEC cert., because I can modify all other documents to have three name except WAEC, which will have just first and last name, i.e TUNDE Chiroma.

Although I have applied again for a change about a month ago, accompanied the indemnity form submitted with my NIN having two names and a newspaper publication (not a national paper though, it's a state owned publishing firm) stating that I am changing from TUNDE Chiroma Adamu to TUNDE Chiroma, but I have not gotten any response from JAMB yet. And our results have been approved by the Senate. Our statement of result will be ready in less than two weeks.

I am thinking if using three in all other documents aside WAEC, then swearing an affidavit to maintain ownership of the WAEC will endanger my chances in the future. Or wait for JAMB which I am not sure they'll approve of my request?

With this explanation, I will advise you modify every other document to have three names. For WAEC, swear an affidavit, but expect to explain tire during interviews and verification by companies.

Still meet a notary for professional advice.

Hello captainbangz and Gerrard59,

I am experiencing a similar problem with my JAMB profile. In my case, my name appears as Ajala Philips Favour on all my other documents, except for my JAMB record, which lists it as Ajala Favour P. Unfortunately, this discrepancy is now reflected on my BSc certificate, creating a significant challenge for me. It is particularly frustrating because it may hinder my chances of pursuing a master's program or other opportunities.

I have been trying to correct this issue, that is, applied for correction of name for over a year, yet I have received no response from JAMB. This has been extremely frustrating. I am so scared that I might miss out on opportunities if this is not corrected as soon as possible. Please, is there any way to resolve this? I would really appreciate any advice from captainbangz on how you successfully made this correction.

PS. Ajala Philips Favour is not my real name; I used this to drive my problem

Current Progress: The indemnity form for my correction of name has been sent to my state's JAMB office. This was sent in December, 2024

If you could, go to JAMB office in your state to push the case swiftly. Also, search on Google for similar issues. Sorry, e don tey I write JAMB.

Did you make a newspaper publication to this effect when applying for the correction? If no, please do, then reapply. Submit all supporting documents as well as the newspaper publication. I don't how friendly your school's student affairs officer is, but mine was very supportive. He even came up with the idea of a newspaper publication.

Yes, I did it. But i didn’t submit it then. But it took several months before my school could send my application to JAMB

My school did not request for such even though I had it. So I submitted only what they asked me.

talk to your students' affairs officer about it. Politely ask him to include it.

To be honest, the school hasn’t been supportive. I am thinking of trying to find connect on the short term. If it doesn’t work, then i can think of applying
