Senate rejects bid to name INEC Headquarters after Nwosu, honour him with a minute silence

The Senate has thrown out prayers contained in a motion seeking to rename the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters after the late Prof Humphrey Nwosu, the former chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC) who oversaw the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The motion was re-sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Thursday after lawmakers threw it on Wednesday.

Abaribe called for posthumous national honours to be conferred on Nwosu in recognition of his role in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

However, the proposal sparked a heated debate once again, with lawmakers deeply divided over Prof. Nwosu’s legacy.

Senator Osita Ngwu acknowledged that Nwosu operated under a military regime, which restricted his ability to announce the results. He argued that “there was no way he would have announced the results with a gun to his head. That doesn’t change the fact that some of us see him as a hero”.

Senator Austin Akobundu, however, described it as most uncharitable for lawmakers to dismiss Nwosu’s contributions, insisting that he deserved a place in Nigeria’s hall of honour.

On the other hand, several senators like Senator Jimoh Ibrahim dismissed the idea outright, questioning why the Senate should honour someone who failed to announce the results insisting that “nothing should be named after him”.

Senator Cyril Fasuyi argued that history does not reward efforts, only results. “As long as he did not announce the result, whether under duress or not, I am against naming INEC headquarters after him,” he submitted.

Also, Senator Sunday Karimi criticised Nwosu for lacking the courage to speak out, while Senator Afolabi Salisu warned that immortalising him would undermine the memory of MKO Abiola, the widely accepted winner of the June 12, 1993, annulled election. “Any attempt to do anything beyond a one-minute silence is to rubbish Abiola’s legacy,” he tendered.
"President Obasanjo was there as president for 8 years; he didn’t name anything after Nwosu. Even Yar’Adua was there, Jonathan was there, Buhari was there. Now that Nwosu is gone, you want President Tinubu to name structures after Nwosu. It will not happen.”
Sunday Karimi (Kogi West Senator)

"Prof. Nwosu and IBB fooled 18 million Nigerians that voted. I would have expected Nwosu to be able to say: 'I couldn’t display these numbers now in my record; Abiola won this election, but I’m not able to announce it.' He died without confessing, and he cannot be rewarded."
Adam Oshiomhole (Edo North Senator)

After intense deliberation, most senators rejected the motion through a voice vote. They, however, agreed to honour him with a one-minute silence and extend condolences to his family, effectively dismissing the other prayers to immortalise Nwosu.

Those of them that were active then, what did they do? Nwosu did his best by providing the most solid electoral formula in Nigerias political history. The "Option A4" was totally responsible for Abiolas supposed electoral victory. It was a masterstroke against potential riggings. He was an umpire. And he did his job to the best of his abilities by sticking to announcing the results until Abacha and co started threatening him. Agbadorian reprobates that only fight with their mouths want to use his head to break the coconut.

Meanwhile none of them stayed to face the wrath of the military immediately the results were cancelled and Abacha went haywire. All of them made a beeline for Seme border and ran as far as their stolen loot could carry them. You want Nwosu to challenge Abacha while you are in London shouting obscenities from the BBC? Why not come down to your Lagos and challenge Abacha yourself? Even the current president that parades around as a pro-democracy activist extraordinaire, was busy then at Chicago doing what him and Escobar know how to do best.

Senators that actually spoke against it are all Yoruba. If Humphrey Nwosu didn't announce the result, how did they know MKO ABIOLA won?

See the way they reason against IGBOs and you tell me NIGERIA is not wired for destruction?

Anyway, MKO ABIOLA, a known coup plotter is a DEMOCRACT but Humphrey Nwosu the INEC chairman that kept announcing results even under duress is irrelevant abi?

In an Election adjudged to be the freest and fairest?

The sacrifice this man made to ensure the emergence of the late MKO Abiola as president-elect should have been the fulcrum of the June-12 1993 presidential election and the attendant crisis the annoying annulment triggered.

However, he is not regarded or recognised. All is simply because the late Prof. Humphrey Nwosu doesnt belong to the caste system within their warped prismatic worldview. Let see them honour Mahmud Yakubu then.

Military rule ended as far back as 1999.
He should have summoned the courage to tell the story since then.

IBB wrote it in his book that mko abiola won

He does not deserve any recognition.

Most Nigerians have little or no lesson of history.
How can any sane human living or dead say Humphrey Nwosu didn't deliver or isn't a hero? If that man didn't insist on conducting election and declaring the results which declared MKO Abiola winner of the election, would we be talking about June 12? Do you know what it means to go against the court knowing fully well that the military had the backing of the court. Just look at how half men that can never have the courage to face a military man in a civilian rule is calling a man like Humphrey Nwosu a failure.....jezzz
How can you call a man that conducted the most credible election in the history of Nigeria a failure, he even wrote a book (Laying the foundation for Nigeria's democracy) that he said MKO Abiola won the 1993 election and they were praising Babangida for saying MKO Abiola won the election and hailed Buhari for declaring June 12 democracy day yet you want to ignore a man that contributed and risked his life to make that happen even some half man are saying trash about him and this are people that should be law makers.
We need to dey focus on de kind of people wey we dey send to go represent us for dis country because tribalism don enter us finish for dis country. Spit.

Imagine these fools

Because he’s an Igbo man.

Did Murtala Mohammed speak up before an International Airport in Lagos was named after him?

Did Awolowo speak from his grave before they name Abuja national stadium after him?

Did Dr Adedevoh speak up to be immortalized after her role in curtailing Ebola?

Did Nnamdi Azikiwe speak up before the International Airport in Abuja was named after him?

So, you see their logic is flawed.

It is not the beneficiary of immortalization that speaks up. It is the living or those who have seen the distinguishable acts of the individual that always decide to so honour the person.

Everyone talks about how free, fair and credible the 1993 elections was despite the challenges and pressure to do otherwise.

When all men of good conscience keep sentiments aside, they will agree that Humphrey Nwosu deserves to be immortalized.

Especially when you realize that 30 years after him, we have charlatans who can’t conduct a credible House of Rep election heading INEC.

Not surprised!

If care is not taken, they'll move a motion to immortalize ojukwu and kani as d heros of democracy in nigeria.

Imagine them asking the Senate to recognize a useless coward who couldn't summon the courage to announce MKO as the winner even when small university students took to the street to face the military.

Trying to turn history on its head to paint Nwosu as a hero should be gazette as the peak fooling of year 2025.

Well...too much political colouration for this motion.

There is really no clear-cut reasons except the fact some feel they want to use it to change the so called "popular" narratives that certain tribe was the cause of June 12.

If Nwosu is immortalised, they believe it will mask that narrative and will actually say the tribe helped birthed June 12 in a positive way by declaring the results of that election, despite obvious resistance from the government
