I'm a big highlife fan ; From Osili, Oliver,Ali, Oriental/Warrior, Fatai Rolling Dollar,Paulson Kalu, Celestine Ukwu to Bright Chimezie. I grew up listening to Highlife, especially Osili nwa mama, Oliver and Ali Chukwuka. My best of Osili ;Egwu Ogolo,Nkemdilim,Nwe ezigbo omuma, Emeka Omanbala and Egwu Amala. Ali Chukwuma ; Amala isekise, Ogoli si, Anu m'melu ogo and Egwu ndi oma. Oliver;Uwa cholu obi umeani,Eneta aghara/tolerance, Ogene egwu uwa, nke nakpa onye and Kaduna special. Highlife music is smooth, melodious it puts you in the dance mood. Anybody who loves highlife is definitely a fun loving person. |

ril19: I give it up for Osadebe and Morocco. These are the undisputed top two But Morroco Maduka was originally an Egwu Ekpili crooner like the late Ayaka Nsugbe and what he(Morocco) sings now can't be called highlife. It's sad, you need to listen to the old Morroco songs then you do hate what he is singing now in the name of music. |

Thanks for your posts , kindly allow me clarify the following Gentleman Mike Ejeagha does not play High life , he plays folkrore "akuko na egwu" music Chris Mba plays World Music ......better known in Nigeria nowadays as Ninja Hip Hip (whatever that means?) Sikiru Ayinde Barrister plays Fuji. "Fuji music is a combination of music consisting of sakara, apala, juju, aaro etc King SunnyAde is a juju Musician and is indeed the King of it Im not criticizing your write up per se but the truth remains that since Nigerians continually use wrong lingua in categorizing music genres and we have a hap hazzard (let me say Dynamic) musical culture / taste , anyone presents anything and gives it whatever name.... Little wonder why most Nigerians are not nominated for Grammies? All the same , thanks for your efforts 2 Likes |

I play lead guitar and bass guitar in shows here in the east. And for this, highlife lines must be running in your veins. The most highlife songs we normally play include osadebe's ebezina, onuigbo and agbalu aka n'azo ani. My group mainly plays oriental brothers' songs, almost all their songs. But you can hardly see any band playing Oliver de Coque's songs because of the complex ensemble you need for that and also his complex congolese style lead lines. Ogbogu Okonji is also good, his tracks like ndi uka and ada n'egbu azu. We also play smart williams songs and Victor uwaifo's guitar boy and zoro mi are also inevitables. My bongo brothers from Owerri, sunny bobo and Ababa Nna and others. But personally my best still remains Oriental brothers even though i dont understand their language atimes! |

CHIM0Z: Biko, is FLAVOUR not a highlife musician? Nobody is mentioning him. Am not too knowledgeable in classifying music but i must tell you that your flavour doesnt come anywhere near highlife. Check up the original meaning of highlife maybe google would help, but it was originally a type of music played for the elites of the society associated with high living standards hence the name high life! 1 Like |

Highlife was the golden age in Nigerian music when artistes were actually creative...now our musicians just download beats and say random things on them... |

I like dis thread! Anyway, let's tell oursef d truth, if all dis artists all listed here play highlife, that means all Nigeria artists r all highlife artists except few. As a juju/highlife artist my self, n as a yoruba man, ther r hundreds styles of music in yoruba land not to talk of igbo, hausa, edo, benue settings etc. Even amidst hiphop artist today, their style differs. Yoruba has fuji, juju, pour highlife, waka, juju gospel, were, apala, awurebe, dadakuada etc, I nid someone frm other tribe to list ther style of music for 4 more idea. Thanks Ops. |
