Thewhizzkid1: Every medical student/graduate has his/her own reasons for studying medicine...B4 u venture into d thoughts of studying medicine, you, yourself, have to have ur own cogent reasons for studying medicine.. I already have mine 1) Wanna be in a position to influence many lives 2)Don't wanna be frustrated by unemployment at all... .....To mention but a few. |

If you truly know that you have problems with the core science subjects, pls find ur area of strength and flow there. Last week in the school I trained, some fifteen people were sent home, after five years of study. No certificate even to appreciate their five wasted years. It's as serious as that. 2 Likes |

Some people are overconfident when they come in and they don't get to finish. Use your fear positively, be overcharged, prepare for jamb and waec like your life depends on it (well, it depends on it), get those high grades and you'll get admission. After that, get info from people ahead of you who've done it or are doing it. Proper orientation is more important than rugged studying. Finally, the most beautiful part is that you don't need to be a genius to do it, you only need hard-work, discipline, and common-sense. Good luck brother. |

Capableben:Kk...I think one of d reasons most medical aspirants choose to study medicine is because of d respect d medical doctors earn and their relatively high pay..The respect most especially..Sometimes most of us jux hide under d umbrella that it's mainly because we want to save lives...The money involved should not be a reason though as most medical students/doctors will also say....As 4 me, I jux chose it because I love the dignity, nature and complexity of d course...I love anything related to healthcare...And medicine is d only course that can give me an allround knowledge of healthcare...Lest I forget, d respect is an added reason, also d desire to save lives( which by God's grace, will grow on as I continue my study)...But d relatively high pay d doctors receive is not a reason for me at all...But who doesn't want to be a paid a high salary? No one..Jux make sure u have an appropriate reason for studying medicine..Don't jux jump into it because of what people tell u or because of what u think...I'll advise u do a thorough research and make sure it is d right course for u....Goodluck... 2 Likes |

Joeself1: pls what does dentistry share with medicineIt is as the name goes. They are doctors that specialize in the study and care of the teeth. They can also perform surgeries in the maxillofacial surgery team, or alone in tooth extraction. Six years spent. 1 Like |

rama5555:I'm also a 200L MB;BS student, I also need such tips. However, I've made little research and have found out some info. (NB: there may be no study tips!!!!!) 1. Our MB;BS curriculum is divided into programmes: e.g in the first eight weeks of of 200L we'll do CBD(cell and body defence) and IBS ( Introduction to Body systems), in shaa Allah. 2. we'll write our first progressive assessment test as soon as we're done with the first 8weeks' programme, in shaa Allah. 3. we'll offer embryology(keith moore's developing human, Sadler's/Langman embryology are good texts), histology( basic or functional histology are good texts), gross anatomy ( Keith moore's COA, chaurasia's anatomy are good texts), biochemistry ( harper's, vasudevan's, etc. texts), physiology (ganong, guyton, semulingam physiology texts. note that the values in sembulingam are not acceptable in our school, however, it's a very simplified text to read) in the 200 Level, in shaa Allah. 4. I have the scheme of work, let me know if you need it! P.S : there's still more to share. welcome to the Unilorin College of Health Sciences!!! |

LES MISERABLES ‘Good afternoon sir, we are the new students rotating through your unit and we just want to tell you we are sorry!’ ‘Sorry for what?’ ‘For anyway we might offend you in this posting’ The above scene should be the ideal introduction given by any group of medical students through a new unit and indeed, it might not even be enough to pacify some ‘malignant’ consultants (ref: a particular neurosurgeon). In my ‘short’ (ref: ASUU, NMA and JOHESU strikes) stay so far in medical school, I have added so many facies to my God given repertoire that sometimes, I even amaze myself. (Facies such as the ‘puppy dog look’, for when I want to make a request, the ‘wide eye look’, for surprise and denial, the ‘quivering lip’, to show fear and hence garner some sympathy, and my personal favourite, the ‘slack-jaw’, which seems to work well for some reason when being percussed). The reason for this is not so far-fetched, because for some reason, it seems I always have to beg for forgiveness from some consultant I offended in some way or the other in practically every department or unit I rotate through. I have prostrated thrice (particularly in the department of otorhinogbogbocalamity), been the recipient of two queries (honestly, I never would have believed that students received queries if I didn’t get them myself) and once, I even had to write a letter describing how foolish and terribly short-sighted I am, all in bid to placate my ‘teachers’. Thankfully, I have not been asked to write a letter to the Provost, copying the Deputy Provost, Secretary to the College, Faculty Officer, Head of Department, my parents, relatives and the forces from the village that always seem to be getting me in all this trouble….well, at least not yet anyway. anonymousjbl: For your embryology, I will advise to steer clear of those saddler and the likes, they are geared towards making embryology seem like rocket science, try out the embryology by Indebir Singh, u can thank me later. The textbook will let u realise that embryology is the simplest aspect of Anatomy, and you will actually understand what you are reading. That said, you have the other textbooks for the remaining courses spot on, avoid sembuligam, use more ganong, guyton to supplement you, make Keith more ur go to textbook for Anatomy, but if u really want to know your onions, you must read the rest, Chaurasia and Gray. Best of Luck in your fledgling Medical career 4 Likes |

mentorandfriend:I personally dnt think d hatred is one sided. Rather all health profession students shld let peace reign. I can testify to the inferiority complex after being treated as if the keith moore textbook I read is different. We all really need to treat one another as important members of the medical profession. 2 Likes |

I've been greatly inspired by this thread. I'm a microbiology graduate from one of the Federal Universities, finished with a CGPA of 4.45, and would love to have cross via D.E into med and surg. I intend writing G.C.E this year, cos my O'level isn't that strong, pls hope I won't be required to submit my original O'level certificate, next year when I apply for D.E into medicine? |
