Wale type ls from the command prompt and show me the result. I am guessing it has the base linux OS installed. It is however "upgradable" sha. If I may ask y did you buy the Linux installed Lappy in the first instance sef? well the best solution na to install Windows. Buy Windows licensed OS and put the CD in the CD drive, restart the PC and follow the instructions.

You can install the OS first sha and license it afterwards.

But show me the outcome of the ls command 1st make I see y your initial commands dey come with errors.

Sorry for been late o.
The laptop has gone worse. Now, immediately it boot to show desktop icon, the screen will go blank and all buttons won't function except the power button solely for force closing the laptop.
Same thing will repeat if I try booting up again.
Laptop specs.
Compaq 615
It came with 1GB ram but upgraded to 4GB
It was window 7 starter. Upgraded to home premium.(almost 2months ago, though problem started 2weeks ago)
Have not formatted it before, haven't encountered any serious virus threat before.
I did diagnose on the laptop, all areas tested was passed. I.e memory test, start up etc.
I notice the laptop is extremely hot when the problem started.

Bros you have answered the question yourself. Laptop is extremely hot.......... Kindly confirm that the processor fan is still working? This can be done by placing your hands on the side of your laptop while it is trying to boot. If the processor fan is no longer working it can cause the extreme heat which can hamper the work of the processor. The symptom you are reporting can happen when the processor isnt working properly.

Kindly involve a technician to resolve this.

Thanks, I reloaded the OS and it works but the problem (screen going blank) still comes up once in a while now. Not as frequent as before.
Could it be hard drive or virus related issues?

I can't install any O.S on my hp 655 laptop. even though it was pre-installed with windows 8, Installing windows 8 back is still impossible. I heard there is something like "UEFI" settings I need to go through in the bios setting but still couldn't do that.

UEFI should not pose any barrier to your installing an OS. Are you using a windows 8 DVD?

Got new Accer mini with windows 8.1, however I'v bn trying to install office 2007 or 2010 but when it gets to 80-90% it stops moving. Tried several stunts no way.

However, I uninstalled the office 365 abi 635 because it was requesting for product key and renewable every year. I don't wanna buy it. Kindly assist.

Given the above, I would suggest you restart the laptop
and keep pressing f10 for bios until you see bios utility or
uefi bios utility. let us know if you see uefi in the bios.

Also, what happened when you try installing windows 7 ?

I doubts he would be able to edit UEFI on windows 7 machine.
If it is windows, he might be.


@ user you could try

Press the Windows (Image: icon_Windows8_key.png) key + C, or swipe in from the right edge of the screen to open your Charms.
Click Settings.
Click Change PC Settings.
In PC Settings, select General.
Under Advanced startup, click Restart now. The system will restart and show the Windows 8 boot menu.
In the boot menu, select Troubleshoot.
In the Troubleshoot menu, select Advanced options.
In the Advanced options menu, select UEFI Firmware Settings.
Click Restart to restart the system and enter UEFI (BIOS).
The Windows 8 boot menu will also show automatically after Windows 8 fails to start successfully three times.

It is similar to sata native mode and compatibility mode for hp bios
windows vista,7 and wanting to downgrade to XP or vice versa. Lol

I was just checking the specs of the laptop and realised it was
pre-install with windows 7. User could have mentioned exactly what happen

That is if he is installing Win7 but reinstalling windows 8 won't require secure boot to be disabled.
