This forum is great but I feel there are features this forum desperately needs that are really lacking. I believe it would go a long way to boost the reputation and attractiveness of the site. I would like to mention some features that I suggest should be introduced in this forum for a better experience.

1. User Interface

Honestly I think Nairaland should look better than its present appearance. It doesn't look attractive enough for its status. This site is among the top popular sites in Nigeria and a medium to represent Nigerians to the rest of the world. A visitor maybe wondering if this is the best thing Nigerians can come up with in terms of design. A good user interface attracts more visitors and interest in the site because first impression matters.

2. Display Photo Thumbnail

The top left corner of every comment box should include a tiny display photo thumbnail of the poster. I think its uncomfortable that I have to click a poster's user name before I can figure out if he/she has a profile photo or not. In numerous cases posters don't upload their photos and clicking on their user id just to check their photos and finding none results in a little feeling of disappointment and anger for wasting precious time and data. In addition to comfort, a crucial benefit of having a display photo thumbnail is the fact that more posters will be encouraged to put up their photos to get noticed easily, and when posters put up their photos they would be compelled to make better comments compared to the trash most posters post when they are hidden. It would definitely boost the quality of contributions made by posters.

3. Moderating Voting Powers

I think the current system of selecting few moderators to oversee the activities on this site needs to be discarded. A lot of moderators have abused their powers issuing unnecessary bans and also responsible for putting some silly topics on the front page. I think it should be better if every poster on Nairaland is given a mod voting power to vote who gets banned and which topic makes it to the front page. Just like we have a like button where posters click to like posts, we should also have a button for members to vote and collectively have a stake in moderating this site . For instance if a number of votes is accumulated to move a topic to frontpage within a short timeframe, the topic will automatically be moved to the frontage or else if it falls short of the expected number of votes when the time is up the voting will be reset to 0 and starts afresh so that every topic wouldn't keep accumulating front page votes and sending them all to frontpage. I don't know if I am understood here cos I am only trying to show the feasibility of this model.

4. Comment Ranking

Most times when a thread has accumulated about 10 pages of comments we find it hard finding that particular intelligent comment hidden somewhere among the tons of dumb and derailed comments. I think it would be great to sort every comment according to the number of likes they have. The comment with the highest number of likes appears first after the body of the thread and then the comments with the lowest number of likes appears last. The number of likes a comment has most times reflects its quality and vice-versa. The benefit of this is that whenever we open a thread to read, instead of seeing the dumb comments appearing first we instead read the best comments first. In addition, it would make posters eager to post great comments in a bid to make that top spot. I think a dislike button should be added so when posters modify a good post to a bad one the dislike button will be used to withdraw the likes. The dislike button will also serve to enable posters vote to hide offensive comments instantly without waiting for any moderator.

5. Reputation Badge

I think every poster here should be able to earn a reputation badge or medal indicating how responsible and a good poster he or she is. This is just to inspire everyone to make quality posts cos no one would like to have a badge beside his name indicating he or she is an irresponsible poster.

These features l listed above I believe can improve the quality and content of Nairaland to a great extent. Seun, I hope you implement the above features and suggestions to upgrade this forum.

i agree with you except for your first point. Using nairaland as a social content saves alot of MBs than any other blogsite. Introducing the interface with designs could consume more MBs.

though, i still stand to be corrected on this opinion

Improving the user interface does not necessarily mean its gonna be slow. There is a way to make Nairaland look very attractive without compromising speed. Nairaland must not be green and white just because its a Nigerian site. The current appearance is ugly in today's standard.

I think comment ranking will likely destroy the thread flow, and quoting or mentioning will make everything jumbled up....

It won't destroy it. Like on most websites, we could have three options when we want to view comments, either by the order of the oldest, newest, or best. The default option could be by the order of the oldest, and if you want to see the most liked comments, you could switch to the order of the best, while those checking for the most recent by the order of the newest and so forth. The thread will still flow and nothing will have to be jumbled.

This wouldn't be a problem if you quote before replying a comment. The mentioning feature is there to solve the issue you just raised.

Something similar has already been implemented in yahoo answers and some other forums and it works flawlessly.

Yeah. Number 4 is very good cos it'll make threads interesting.

Also, the replies to each comment should be directly below the comment in a descending order according to time.

Well I will be forced to ask you what the definition of a good User Interface is?
1. Do you term a User Interface full with all unnecessary Javascript / jquery effects and heavy background images as good ?

The visitor should not wonder if that's the beat thing Nigeria can come up in terms of design, The most popular forums are ugly. Just name it. From

- American biggest forum(. I.e American version of Nairaland. reddit.com )?
-Ghanian Version (I.e Ghana bas(z)e. Com )?
- Most popular Mobile Forum (I.e Xda-developers.com) ?
- Middle east/ Arab (Araimehqu )? Can't recall actually spelling.

A Visitor that thinks that this is the best Nigeria can come up with is short sighted. Even in China, Japan most forums are ugly go check Baidu Forum ( Chinese version of Google. Most popular site in China is called Baidu, Her forum is called Baidu Forum. )

2. Display Photo Thumbnail

The top left corner of every comment box should include a tiny display photo thumbnail of the poster. I think its uncomfortable that I have to click a poster's user name before I can figure out if he/she has a profile photo or not. In numerous cases posters don't upload their Atmotosphere and clicking on their user id just to check their photos and finding none results in a little feeling of disappointment and anger for wasting precious time and data.

I still don't see how your point makes a difference. No offence. Also the idea of thumbnail in my opinion will make the site unnecessarily Bogus and too flashy. Also it will make the site slow.

Every thumbnail be it loaded on Nairaland's CDN (content delivery network) or on a Dropbox server or Windows Azure or Amazon Drive or Google Drive will still have an impact on the speed of accessing / viewing each thread on Nairaland.
Every thumbnail you see will be more than 5kb. Programmatically, every picture with a white background have a content of 1024bytes [ 1kg ] * 5 = 5kg. Then how much colorful background. This in one way or the other will impact on The cost of me viewing Nairaland. Call me a MISER or a Stingy Fellow but I must tell you I don't want to spend 1MB viewing to page of a thread on Nairaland. I can barely afford a N100 day meal not to talk of MB, so also the Majority on NL.

I don't know if I am understood here cos I am only trying to show the feasibility of this model.

I understand your point here perfectly. But I have to say, an Utilitarian System of Justice (a system of Justice where the idea of something been good or bad is determined by the vote of the majority.). This is not justice, we no longer live in Rome and nairaland is not a gladiator arena. We are in the 21st century, where rules, laws and regulations are been made and people are expected to Break, twist or bend but not break them.

What am saying sir, is voting system is not the best as it can also be abused. Introduce such and we will see some FACTIONS arising, we will see THE PRO- PDP's on Nairaland going against the PROGRESSIVES like I, we will see a situation of blinded system of justice.

Let me not go further its bad. To introduce such type of Justice. I agree with you that some moderators have abused their powers.

Nairaland Rules and regulations are enough and OK. Its like a constitution.

4. Comment Ranking

Most times when a thread has accumulated about 10 pages of comments we find it hard finding that particular intelligent comment hidden somewhere among the tons of dumb and derailed comments. I think it would be great to sort every comment according to the number of likes they have. The dislike button will also serve to enable posters vote to hide offensive comments instantly without waiting for any moderator.

Nooooooooooooo !!!! Don't do this its not right. Sir please you destroying beauty and chronological flow. Ooooooooooo you abuse Simplicity and its unending Joy.

Now bro, I understand what you mean but I havto say the Voting system is mostly used on Questions and Answers site like Qoura.com (biggest question and answer site ), or StackOverflow.com (one of the largest website in the world also questions and answer), Yahoo answers, Google groups.

This ranking system is based on Answers or Opinion that are nice and meaningfull appearing first before others.

Sir, Nairaland is no Question and answer site or does not share same idea as those sites. Also this ranking of comments and changing their position will disrupt coherence of several post. Imagine a User B replying to another User A and User B comment is liked 500times and so becomes first on page. If a visitor should visit that thread and sees user B comment as first he will be confused cause he never understands how the discussion started.

Its like jumping into a talk and you have no idea of what the talk is about. So for me this is a no. If Nairaland had been an Opinion / Question answer site I would have supported this.

Well this is great, As I see it been useful in the business sections, technology market, phone market , web market, programming market, fashion market and all kind of market place on Nairaland. It will help people identify fake buyers or sellers or dubious nairalanders.

But, you should know even at this there will still be Nairalanders who in need of bad reputation. Also sir I will like to know what logic, you will want seun to use in creating this Reputation Badge system idea.

Reason I ask is that all logic I think off have short comings

1. In Some websites, the older the User have registered the more his reputation. (Hmmm this means people like Marieolae who just registered September and have become famous on romance will be considered not famous)

2. Voting system, hmmm this can be abused but it's the most logical way.

3. I can't recall the Name but its the biggest forum for the Middle East. In that forum the more the number of Mentions the more popularity you get. (I think this is good. As I can't find a logical flaw with this yet).

Let me stop here, I will please like you to reply me on Point No 5.

The part I quoted above shows that you are a kind of person who is not innovative and your likes are people who do not allow development to thrive. So because you know some ugly sites in the US and China it should be the reason why Nairaland should follow suite and remain ugly too? Your line of thought also means that because US and China have not put a man on Mars therefore Nigeria should never bother to try putting a man on Mars. Why can't we take the lead and make others follow? Must we be following them and refusing to take leaps ahead of them? If you think Nairaland should remain ugly just because other sites are ugly then you belong to the class of people who don't think ahead. If Seun buys your idea then he is definitely not an innovative person.

Secondly, a site with a good user interface does not automatically translate to putting JavaScript, images and all that to slow down the site. Nairaland can be made to look more professional without those things please. You made absolutely no point concerning that.

I still don't see how your point makes a difference. No offence. Also the idea of thumbnail in my opinion will make the site unnecessarily Bogus and too flashy. Also it will make the site slow.

I don't think you have worked with pictures before. If you have done so you wouldn't have said the above. I am a programmer and I must tell you that thumbnails can even be as little as 1kb if the right technology is adopted to size them. It doesn't have to be too large in size. Just a thumbnail of about 60 × 60pixels. A single page of comments contains about 35 posts, in total that would be 35kb of thumbnails. 35kb of thumbnails on a page can not slow down a site even with our EDGE network in Nigeria. What difference does it make when you open those picture threads that contains about 1MB of pictures? Or are you telling me that you don't open threads containing pictures? Is anyone complaining about threads containing pictures? Again I think you are making no point concerning the issue.

If I may ask, are you saying that a Nairaland moderated by 1,000,000 contributing members will not be better off and sanitized than a Nairaland moderated by just 20 or so moderators? And what is wrong if the masses choose what is good or bad? You still gave absolutely no reason to show it is bad. It was empty criticism.

Nooooooooooooo !!!! Don't do this its not right. Sir please you destroying beauty and chronological flow. Ooooooooooo you abuse Simplicity and its unending Joy.

Who told you Nairaland is not a questions and answers forum? Or haven't you seen people asking for assistance in numerous threads? Concerning the point you raised about disruption of flow, the quote button is there to solve the problem. Before you reply a comment you should use a quote feature so that readers can see what you replied to. It can be made to appear as an option for readers to sort by comment likes. If you don't like it there are many others who will like it. Besides, the average Nairaland thread with 100 comments has only about 20 comments responding to the thread meaningfully while the other 70 comments are junks of derailments and trash. The disruption of flow will greatly discourage the chains of derailing comments and force posters to stay on topic. Nairaland is not a chat room where the comment made previously determines what the next comment should be. So I think it would be nice sending the junk comments at the back while the best comments comes in front. It will boost the maturity of the site.

Reading through all you have said I think you only wanted to criticize the suggestions only for criticizing sake and nothing else. You just rushed to criticize without pausing for a moment to think about what you intended to type.

The term reasonable is subjective according to some schools of taught and objective according to others, so I will not debate with you on this as what is reasonable to you might not be to me.

The part I quoted above shows that you are a kind of person who is not innovative and your likes are people who do not allow development to thrive.
Mr.
You do not introduce new features to a website if they will add no benefit. Are you a programmer? Have you written thousand of svripts only for one site and later you felt you eated your time? Go ask the coders. Simplicity is power in programming. Beside I am not anti-innovative, Mr you don't expect every senator in a house to support a Bill. And when 1 senator goes against another it does not mean the other is countering innovation. There must be one reason or the other that made the other arrived at that.

So sir your points above are not innovative. I gave due respect where respect is due at point No5. When someone criticise you accept it. This is Nairaland. And you meet the crazy, happy, lunatics, psychos.

Mr you talk about good user interface, but you barely defined or show a model or replica to one. If major sites in the United States or China have bad designs then ask what's wrong?

Beside sir design if these popular sites are a result of issues you put to consideration than beauty. You just don't create one HTML page that loads forever all because you need beauty.

I love Nairaland simple design. I can use Nairaland to check if the internet service is good. Its like using google to see if network for browsing is OK. Simplicity and not what you are ranting about.

Give me a good design model and let me see what to talk about. You lead by example. Suggest by leadership

Secondly, a site with a good user interface does not automatically translate to putting JavaScript, images and all that to slow down the site. Nairaland can be made to look more professional without those things please. You made absolutely no point concerning that.
grin grin

I see you don't know what a good user interface will require. Even Html5 cannot achieve all. You still need several things to be put in place.
If you want nairaland to have a good user interface, then Nairaland needs some modern techies put in place, like the login forgot password, login error page should he on 1 page. And a Navable Tab Menu should be put so as to make things easy for people to know where to login and where to recover forgotten password etc.

See it goes on and on you need a lot of new effects to be added so you can't do without JavaScript or Jquery. Never

Ymodulus here is part of the reason why I said the user interface of Nairaland needs improvement. In the attached picture, comments were deleted but the vacant boxes were still left there making a mess. Does that look professional to you?

Thanks for your helpful and generous suggestions. We will surely implement the ones we agree with as soon as we can implement them.

I don't think you have worked with pictures before. If you have done so you wouldn't have said the above. I am a programmer and I must tell you that thumbnails can even be as little as 1kb if the right technology is adopted to size them

Mr I have worked extensively on files as a whole.
I stop, just want to say am no kiddie in programming.

It doesn't have to be too large in size. Just a thumbnail of about 60 × 60pixels. A single page of comments contains about 35 posts, in total that would be 35kb of thumbnails. 35kb of thumbnails on a page can not slow down a site even with our EDGE network in Nigeria.
Mr you shoot yourself. Addition of 35kb still slows the site.
Are you serious about the Edge network?? You talk like you don't know how our networks in Nigeria are poor. Also you forget to talk about the browsing speed of the device.

Calm down don't just jump assuming trash because you feel toh want to attack seun. I believe you are one if those that set up site pack flash everywhere believing its beauty.

What difference does it make when you open those picture threads that contains about 1MB of pictures? Or are you telling me that you don't open threads containing pictures? Is anyone complaining about threads containing pictures? Again I think you are making no point concerning the issue.
It makes a difference. To every 1MB page of pictures you add 35kb.

Now if you visit 100pages or reload 100times. Mathematically.

35kb * 100 = 3500kb = 3.5Mb shocked.

So you want me to waste 3.5MB of data all on profile pix or avartar ??

Hey before you go to caching please consider disk space efficiency, read and write speads

Ymodulus:

The term reasonable is subjective according to some schools of taught and objective according to others, so I will not debate with you on this as what is reasonable to you might not be to me.
To be honest, you are not saying anything reasonable enough. So no need wasting my time responding to all that above.

I told you that you only wanted to criticize for criticizing sake and that's all. You just failed to give a CONCRETE REASON why the voting system I suggested will not work. The PDP faction stuff you raised is just pointless. Who told you the mods are not fractioned? If I may ask, are you saying that a Nairaland moderated by 1,000,000 contributing members will not be better off and sanitized than a Nairaland moderated by just 20 or so moderators? And what is wrong if the masses choose what is good or bad? You still gave absolutely no reason to show it is bad. It was empty criticism.

Mr do you visit the politics section?? Nairaland . com = Nairaland.com / politics.

Sir are you saying 177 million Nigerians ruling Nigeria is better than 36governors, Appeal court , supreme court etc

Please it is not a must to criticize when you have no valid reasons to do so. Even if there are flaws are you saying the badge system will NEVER help to improve content on Nairaland therefore it should NEVER be implemented? Is that what you are saying? All your points are just empty without strong reasons backing it up.
I see you don't read well did I go against point 5?? I even encouraged point 5.

However I asked you to state how you feel the logic for the badge ranking will be implemented.

You didn't state any and you just jump into conclusion that I criticized your points. Man wise up. Do not just talk things if you have no model.

No. On the hidden comments showing that way no. It doesn't look professional. These was his you should have started the thread, images and proves to show what you saying. Not using terms like good user interface when we can't see a model.
