What is your definition of lateness?

Are you comparing yourself to folks around you or getting fustrated of not getting admission yet?

Bro,no age barrier when it comes to education. When you get admission you will meet 26yrs old in 100level. Stop comparing yourself to anybody, get focused and don't allow fustration to set in.

Best of luck..

I advise you get an ND,pre degree will not offer you any certificate and if you don't meet the cut off ,you will still be at the same point.

Lots of poly now offer part time ND for 2yrs which makes it easy to do direct entry or still try luck with Jamb along the line, you are assured of an ND certificate to proceed for HND.

Remember,Bsc and HND dichotomy is about to be passed into law,if it becomes law then,HND and Bsc holders will be at par.

My opinion bro..!

It all depends on your future plans.

Since you are interested in Engineering, I'll advise you go for ND. With ND in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, you stand a chance of securing placement as Production Operator or Technician in many multinational companies and earn unbelievable income. You can work for 3years, save enough money and go to the UK for 2-years top-up degree in Engineering. Your 3years experience will give you an edge after your degree in the UK thereby landing you a juicy offer back here in Nigeria. That's a good plan, though it's not that straightforward or easy.

Alternatively, you can go for your pre-degree. Admission to 100level is guaranteed in most schools if you pass your pre-degree exams and meet the jamb cut-off (because most schools do register their pre-degree students for utme to regularise with jamb). That way you'll graduate at 26 (suppose there is no ASUU strike... lol) which is still ok. Most companies still set age limit of 28 in their graduate trainee programmes and all things being equal, you'll be less than that on completion of NYSC. So you are still on track. It is however more challenging to secure a job as fresh engineering graduate with a degree/HND than ND. One Engineer (degree/HND) is needed to supervise four Technicians (ND).

Experience is key in engineering. If you however don't have the intention to practice, perhaps you are interested in lecturing or want to be an engineering scientist, don't go the ND route. Get your first degree and proceed to masters and Ph.D thereafter.

Any help for civil engineering student? I mean how he could enjoy his stay being in school and chances of getting employed.. Currently in part2, if things works out fine, I should graduate by the age of 23... Hope that's OK too? Bro, what other things do you think I could learn that's in line with my course of study...
Re: Am I Too Old To Enter 100 Level At 21? by akinsadeez(m): 12:03pm On Oct 23, 2014
21 yrs is not late na. The funny thing us that when you finally gain admission, you will realize that you will most likely be one of the youngest in the class. While in school, I had men of 40 and 50 something yrs in my class. Even the cut off age for NYSC is 30 yrs so you still av 9 gud yrs. Just pursue your dream no matter the age. God bless.

Look for a construction firm around you no matter how small. Offer yourself to work for free during long vacations. Don't wait till your school mandates you to go for SIWES. You can even attach yourself to a building contractor or any practicing civil engineer you know, as apprentice. There is Voluntary Industrial Experience (VIE) in developed countries whereby students can walk in to any company and apply to work for free just for the experience. It's unfortunate that's not the trend here. The point is, try to get as much work experience as you can before graduating. Proficiency in the use of civil engineering software like AUTO CAD, before graduating, will also be an advantage.

Thanks so much for this enlightenment, think I'll go with the ND , then write JAMB along , so even if I prolly get admitted through JAMB I'll still have my ND certificate and if it doesn't pull through I'll try Direct entry or just go for HND , then Start work and later Start a program abroad. is that good enough bruh?

The choice is all yours. Whatever makes you happy is good enough besides, age is still on your side.

My Guy 21 is in noooo way late. Go for the ND. you have better options with it. after ND u can Apply direct entry for BSc or just continue Ur HND. any how you got 2 certificates.

You better be grateful to God. I gained admission at age 24! After several fustrating efforts, but I thank God tho. Infact I almost didn't make it to NYSC,after OND,one year mandatory IT,lost one year again b4 gaining admission back to HND. Ur lucky you'll still make it in time for NYSC and even get a job without declaring an "official" age, loool!
So worry not because even while bemosning my fate I met a 31yrs old and when I thot I'd seen it all,I met a coursemate in ND1 whose 1st child was 18years,now can u beat that!

starting a program abroad or in nigeria, either way is good.

if you have plans to go into politics, you might have to weigh schooling in nigeria because it gives you an edge and helps you understand the landscape better.

on the other hand, the employment sector is good for foreign degrees, it depends.
