The 5 Wicked Truth About Wizkid's "AYO" Album by Neldrizzy(m): 7:53pm On Oct 25, 2014
I wanted to pen down a review for Wizkid’s
album, but halfway through writing mine, i came
across this one and thought to share with everyone
as it emphatically reflects my very thoughts on the
album. Read below and enjoy;
Artist: Wizkid
Album: AYO
Producers: Sarz, Shizzi, Uhuru, Spellz,
Legendary Beatz, Del B, Dr Frabz, Maleek
Berry
Features: Femi Kuti, Akon, Seyi Shay, Banky
W, Phyno, Tyga, Wale,LAX
Total Running time: 71 Mins
On a more pressing note, have you listened to In
My Bed? If not sharply download it HERE It
comes thumping in, just after Wizkid is done
demanding if you are going to dance at the sight of
his economic power on Show me the money.
This starts the ‘’Ayo’’ experience, and signifies
number 1, out of the 5 Wicked Wizkid facts
revealed on the album.
Wicked Truth 1: Wizkid + any beat= SLAY!!!!
Ayo is an ocean wave of varied beats, and Wizkid
is surfing through like he presented the vocals, and
the producers engineered sounds to match. There
is tact in his sounds that seem to slide with every
angle of an instrumental.
In My Bed, In Love and Omalicha are precise
examples, but a remarkable point is on One
Question with Yemi Sax. Now if there is such a
thing as a typical Wizkid song, this may not fall
under the category, due to the sound of the sax,
but he came on,and he owned it.
He possessed the rhythm and fused with his usual
delivery, which is why as different as the song is
from Show me the money, he still found a way to
ask a girl ‘’Are you gonna dance’’?
By the 3:01 mark, he becomes a vocal conductor,
commanding the guitar, the drums, the bass, while
the instrumentals follow obediently.
Drop Wizkid in the middle of a gun fight and he
can lace vocals to match the bangs and booms all
over. If it’s recorded, a DJ might spin it.
Wicked Truth 2: What he lacks in song writing,
he makes up for in rhythm riding
Of course an album with money and girls as 80%
of its content may not need super intelligent
penmanship, but there are areas where the recycled
lyrics were avoidably flawed.
Example 1: On Joy for instance, there are heart
warming expressions of gratitude and grace, but
they don’t align perfectly in rhyme, or in any
identifiable structure.
Example 2: On Show me the money after ‘’Lagos
to Dubai……Jo’Burg to Mumbai’’ He ends the
verse with ‘’na Wizzy music they want to dance
to’’ There should have at least been a rhyme here.
Example 3: On For You, dragging the point of
‘’See wetin yooour love dey doooo oh, and
Ogogoro dey high pass pami oh’’ sounds like
stretched vowels in place of actual expressions.
Some words could have filled those holes.
Why these flaws may go unnoticed however are as
follows;
The lyrics are plain, and driven in fine rhythm that
will cause one effect, they will stick.
The song Ojuelegba for example sounds like it can
become anthem for people in that actual area of
Lagos, Nigeria, since they can relate to the story
telling theme of Wiz’s lyrics.
The beat of Ojuelegba and Mummy Mi are very
traditional. They are alive with that core African
energy, while the lyrics reach out to people in the
hood for Ojuelegba, and loving mothers for
Mummy Mi
Wicked Truth 3: The Producers on this album are
beasts!
Maybe he threatened the lives of his producers in
demand for their best, or maybe they just love
Wizkid. Either way, It’s a stampede of feel good
music from track 1- 19. It is safe to say that
Wizkid has released a multi-purpose and multi-
mood line up of jams, because the beat makers
geared up and went to town. The whole album is
structured to be bumped to indiscriminately.
Here’s a list of the producers and their roles.
Sarz- Came nice on Jaiye Jaiye, brought an
electric charge on Ki Lo Fe
Shizzi- Davido’s go-to beat maker continues his
winning streak. Who do you think brought the
justification behind the demand ‘’Are you gonna
dance’’?
Uhuru- Lost his mind on In My Bed, and still
hadn’t found it on For You (Though strangely, a
signature beat is slightly heard here)
Spellz- Dropped a good beat on Mummy Mi, and
then a bomb on the international sounding In Love
Legendary Beatz- Distinct sound on Ojuelegba,
banging ones on Dutty Wine and Omalicha. And
of course you know what happened on ‘Caro‘!
Del B- Almost memorable on Kind Love, but
made a hit on On top your matter
Dr Frabz-Wreaked havoc on Bombay,
experimented on One Question and subtled out on
Joy
Maleek Berry- Did drum damage on Murder,
wired with explosives and a detonator!!
Wicked Truth 4: Some Extra Info to utilize as you
see fit.
Phyno was a total savage on Bombay
Wiz’s friends behaved themselves. Every feature
nailed their bit. Tyga could have been more life
changing but the verse was suitable, while Wale
won us over with the Jollof line.
There are 14 songs talking about girls
We loved the line ‘’Make you chop my money, I
no mind……na God give me’’
Wicked Truth 5: Wizkid came through on all the
tracks and he showed his ability to be eclectic
while at it by trying different sounds.
Whatever the criticism on the depth of his lyrical
content , it is near impossible to fault Wizkid on
his mastery of rhythm and his understanding of the
audience he plays to. His eponymously titled
album ‘AYO’ Wizkid reminds us why he has
earned our respect and why he continues to rule
over the realm of sound, money and girls.
Verdict: We rate this album A for ‘Are you go-na
dance oh, if you pay for the album?’ Don’t answer
that, you probably will. Lobatan!

No doubt, both the writer of the original script and the OP are die-hard fans of the wiz"kid" guy. Rating that album an "A" tells us more about them.

How on earth would I ever consider as excellent, a song with the most redundant lyrics as stated below :
Are you gonna dance oo if i show you my money? What concerns his average fans out there with his "money" before they could dance? To now add salt to injury, he got to a point that he was just shouting AFRICA AFRICAN BABY(WTF!!) . Still yet to fathom the correlation between the lyrics.
What sense is in GINGER OOO GINGER, THE WAY YOU................. BLAH BLAH BLAH.

From my observations, Most people that do love all these musics are peeps who go to joints/clubs, where the loudspeaker keeps banging the rubbish into your ear and after few bottles of alcoholic drinks you won't have a choice than to start slowly oscillating your head to the beat, hence you stealthily and unknowingly becoming used to the song. I am also a victim.

I know I'm gonna get mobbed on this. Truth is ; that guy is overhyped . He keeps singing rubbish songs with vague lyrics and never stop making avoidable blunders in most of his songs.

Imagine in one of his popular songs he mistakenly sang "I'll always do you wrong, never do you right", just as he did on "all your mans shall fall that day". No-one is perfect! But before you release a song, you should take enough time to listen to it. However, i won't blame him, just like Timaya said in one of his "noise", he said "we dey give dem pangolo(tin)", pangolo is what Nigerians want and let them continue to dish them out exclusively for us.

Av not listened to all o, but from the few I heard, the "in my bed" song was pathetic. What kinda song is that one?

Anybody that rates that song A needs to change his brand of music. Leme not even start with "are you ghana dance o" or "bombom Bombay song". I don't see this album performing well at all.

Any musician that cant write good songs anymore should hire songwriters.

I would actually rate them A++. You forgot "In my bed" - a 5-star song of manly INTENT.

Wizkid has been the most CONSISTENT Nigerian artiste for a while now. And people don't listen to his songs because of the lyrics.

If you want to turn up the temperature in a club, a bar or a party - Wizzy is the right man.

If you stay out from 8 PM to 3 AM, you will usually hear his songs played not less than 5 times - that's how good he is. No other Nigerian artiste currently comes close.

It's hardly ever about the lyrics - even the venerable Mr Yanni doesn't say shít.

Far from it!

Music is not close to being dead.

Download the itunes player on your system. Then go to the itunes store and you will be pleasantly OVERWHELMED!

You don't have to like every genre of music. Wizkid, like every other artiste, has his audience, and he does a damn good job of satisfying them.

As good as the guys you listed up there are, you most certainly don't want to hear them in certain environments - or when you're in certain moods.

Apart from Uhuru doing a great beat for the song, its down right wacked.

I can imagine playing the song in the car with a prospective respectable client..........he'd probably look at me with less respect after that and he might not even patronize me after that.

That's why its teenagers and young people that go crazy over the song.

@topic i totally agree on some of the songs in the albulm which lacks lyrical content and beclouded with watery flows,i'm a die hard fan of wizkid but this albulm didn't do any justice, although few of the tracks were cool and banging with tremendous beats,i still prefer starboy album than Ayo though.

If you want good morals, there's Don Moen and related artistes.

In a night club with tons of skimpily-clad women advertising their wares. 'Morality' is the last thing you want to hear about.

And don't even get me started on morals. Is talking about women immoral? Immoral by whose standards? Who made the person an authority?

ANYTHING you FEEL from your core is legit!

Datz dia mentality... 'Nas, jay z and all are not broke!

Mostly dis days pple kinda prefer banging beats to deep and tyte lyrics... Datz y most of awa musicians go for fast beat to cover up cos slow beat makes pple wanna listen to u line by line..... Wizzy has a very good voice and charisma... I suggest he works wif some song writers to fine tune his music.... I kinda really like d dude... Even micheal jackson, bey, toni braxton, w houston etc had songs written for dem.. R kelly wrote songs for many popular artiste...
