nikkyshyne: You are the ignorant one that should shut up. We as a society NEED practitioners in these fields. Desperately need them. Our problem is we employ anybody to do the jobs those who studied these courses should be doing. So they too do other people's jobs. The circle never ending 5 Likes 1 Share |

kozaic: Display of ignorance. Those courses are very relevant to any economy. How would you be able to write here without those who cleaned your nose and dippers when you were a baby. And what would you have been without that stern HM with his cane to make sure you behaved. 3 Likes 1 Share |

I assume that the basic premise of the OP is the income generating potential of these funny courses and I don't think that makes the OP very wrong. Some have argued that the ones who study these funny courses go on to make boatloads of cash, enough to employ those who study the mainstream courses. What percentage are we talking about? The truth is that while these courses are not funny, the society we are in is not developed enough to appreciate their values. Gradually the system will evolve to pay each of these disciplines their dues, but some of them are not surefire employment magnets. And we know that more people will seek employment than go into entrepreneurship. And that is taking of the immediate. I will use Physiology as an example. In a system where medicine and surgery is sitting atop what should be a multidisciplinary plateau, the basic sciences find no relevance except in the academia. And with an increasing number of schools offering the course, how many of them will find employment in the academics? What happens to the rest who should be working in research facilities and so on? Nothing! They mix up with the crowd and lose their identities as physiologists or move abroad. I have 2 friends who are testimonies. One is a doctor, the other studying for physiotherapy. It is not these courses we should be laughing at, it is our society. And we should stop laughing and making noises. Angry noises. They are destroying the future of our society by eroding the foundations on which we can build development. You know am talking about politicians My tuppence 5 Likes 1 Share |

Truth be told...I never knew any of this courses existed until I came to the university Most of the people bashing the Op are those who maybe they were giving those courses and had to accept it. How many of them can rightly claim that they actually opted for PRIMARY EDUCATION in their Jamb Form? And now they are saying the Op is ignorant The truth is that majority of nigerian jambites apply for professional courses not until the university will change it for them and give them something else. Many of them don't accept it,,some will stay for another year while others will accept the course and write jamb again. Come to the university and see how many people are buying transfer forms to switch to a better department. Some will even still come back to study that course of their dreams after their first degree... So what are you people on about Fact is the ignorance started from our primary and secondary schools where we were made to believe that we had to only study professional courses. I'm still looking for the young nigerian that put CHILD EDUCATION as his first course choice when writing his/her First jamb. Including those bashing the Op 1 Like 1 Share |

kozaic:...I don't respect a below par opinion.it's only in Nigeria that people like you view some courses as trash.these courses, you degrade, are wonderful courses.the fact that you don't like the courses do not make it to be worthless.we must stop killing people's dreams with our untested opinion and intelligence. 1 Like |

0coded80: Those are the lies your lecturers and course advisers use to make you feel good to continue paying school fees while you waste your years. I saw your 62 likes, I have no doubt in my mind that a vast majority of under graduates here share the same sentiment. How many of you before writing jambs actually called your uncles and cousins to inquire about the reality in their various offices? It is only in Nigeria and probably most of the "charge and bail" west African colleges who tell their students "you can work anywhere" what a superfluous statement. The moment you are admitted in an European or American university, your mission is defined. I have said it before, 70% of unemployed Nigerians are people whose course have no bearing in the Nigerian labour market, 30% are probably guys who got unlucky and didn't get a good grade or yet to pass the employment test. may experience teach you guys better. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Godmother: They become early childhood specialist teachers. I don't know about you but I would pay top money to have my kid between 1 and 6 yrs taught by an early childhood specialist. For your info, that is nursery education which is the bedrock of any child's education. Why do you think there are kids now that are not well adjusted or have issues with their education? Check their formative years. Emancipate yourself from mental slavery. 1 Like |

None of these courses are useless, they are very important as a matter of fact, they are the most important, recently a primary school teacher could not read her certificate in Edo state. 1 Like |

kozaic:@op you have a myopic view. some of the courses you mentioned are needed for the normal running of our society. the others would probably push the graduates into entrepreneurship and they would probably turn out richer than you. Only God knows if you even finished from secondary school. |
Re: Funny Courses Offered By Nigerian Universities by MNDY(m): 8:57am On Nov 01, 2014 |
OP, will you remove my course (History & Int'l Studies) from your list before I send thunder to fire you? . And by the way, did you mean its Education programme form because I saw "EDU" written at its front! . The History and Int'l Studies course opens employment doors into either journalism, government parastatals & agencies, or embassies! . Besides, you are also inclined to take yourself beyond the shores of your country to be involved in another country's government as a worker due to that International Studies aspect of the course! So, what are you not saying? . Some universities offer only International Studies, others attach History! Heard Wizkid dropped from LASU while studying International Relations in 300Level to pursue music! . BOTTOM LINE: As emphasized by another Nairalander above, tertiary education empowers and is not necessarily for a white collar job! |
