Tara Agro to Transform Adani Enugu into Regional Hub for Rice Production

With works nearing completion on the ultra-modern Tara Agro rice processing mill, the agrarian Adani Community in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, is on the threshold of transformation from largely subsistence agriculture into a commercial hub for agribusiness and rice production.

According to a statement issued in Lagos at the weekend, it was stated that the 42,000 tonnes Tara Agro mill, which will be the biggest rice processing mill in South East Nigeria, is expected to be completed by January 2014. 

The statement further stated that the mill, which is a private sector investment, is being built by Tara Agro Industries Limited, owners of the Ebony Agro rice processing mill in Ikwo in Ebonyi State, and the producers of International quality rice brands namely Ebony Super and Ebony Gold. Larger than the Ebony Agro mill, the Tara Agro mill is also said to be fully integrated to produce, package, grade and export quality brands of rice-under a new Brand-Queen of the Niger.

An impact investment, Tara Agro mill is being set up to process locally sourced paddy rice from small holder farmers in Adani Community into parboiled polished rice of international quality. When it begins operation, the mill will raise demand for paddy, and is projected to increase the acreage of rice cultivation from 1,400 hectares one-crop per year in Adani to about 5,000 hectares of three crops per year cycle, thereby expanding the number of financially viable primary producers.

It will also provide supply to meet the growing national demand for high quality rice. Over 5,000 direct and indirect employments will be created in the community. These factors combined will raise household incomes in Adani Community, creating sustainable wealth for the people. 
Chairman, Tara Agro Industries Limited, Mr. Charles Ugwuh, said, “Our increased investment in rice production is a testament to our firm commitment to the growth, development and proper coordination of rice production and processing value chain in Nigeria. The choice of Adani rice producing community as the location of the Tara Agro rice mill is as a result of our commitment to building an empowering rice value chain from which small holder farmers can reap social/ economic benefits.

“We are committed to fostering a value chain with shared economic, social and environmental values in which producers, buyers, processors, and others collaborate to create value. It is our belief that this will accelerate the transformation of small holder farmers from subsistence levels into commercially viable enterprises.”

According to Ugwuh, Tara Agro will unlock the huge economic potential of Adani Community by bridging the existing rice processing gap, and by dividing the usually combined functions of producer/processor/seller assumed by thousands of small holder farmers in a way that is most efficient and beneficial to the value chain.

“Tara Agro mill will enhance the productivity of thousands of subsistence farmers through paddy off-take agreements, and by fostering the emergence of input suppliers, storage and logistics providers, as well as technical support, credit and market linkages, among others, which were formerly non-existent on the rice value chain in Adani.”  

Project Director, Tara Agro rice processing mill, Mr. Reuben Malcolm, said, “The huge investment in the new rice processing mill in Adani is a courageous one born of patriotic zeal, and commitment by its promoters to the growth and development of the Nigerian economy, in spite of the evident infrastructure deficit in Uzo Awani Local Government Area. The mill site is not connected to the national grid, and the construction of the factory has been wholly dependent on the use of heavy duty generators procured for that purpose.”

Malcolm urged the State and federal government to fast track development of infrastructure such as roads, standard bridges, power supply, storage facilities as well as rectification of the broken down Adani irrigation system, if the potential of Uzo Awani as the leading staple crop processing centre of the South East must be unleashed.

He also called for the state government’s intervention in promoting mechanised farming, agricultural extension services and ensuring access to credit by farmers’ co-operative societies to create an enabling operating environment for private sector players like Tara Agro.          

Investment in the Tara Agro integrated rice mill by the promoters of Ebony Agro Industries Limited aligns with the Federal Government’s current policy focus of re-diversifying the economy and re-positioning the agricultural sector to play the lead role in economic development.

Once it is operational, the mill will further boost the quantity and quality of rice production in the country, revitalise and harness the enormous potentials of the developing rice sub- sector to create food security, stimulate job creation, and wealth creation for farmers.

Ebonyi Rice Moves into European Market

Governor Martin Elechi of Ebonyi State on Friday said that rice produced in the state had moved into markets in Europe and the United States.

Elechi said that the rice was being produced from “Satake Mills” established by the state government at the cost of N1.29 billion.

He made the disclosure when he spoke at Ebonyi Day at the ongoing 24th Enugu International Trade Fair in Enugu.

He said that the rice was being sold in large quantities in London, Canada, Florida and other parts of Europe.

The governor described it as a “breakthrough which has enhanced the glory of the state in rice production.”

Represented by Dr Ifeanyi Ike, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Elechi said that the quality of the rice produced from the mills facilitated its acceptance in the global market.

He said that three mills were established under the ‘Satake’ mills which the state government imported from Japan and cited in each of the three senatorial districts.

He said that the mills had a combined production capacity of 15 tonnes of milled and packaged rice per hour at full capacity.

Elechi said that the state government had distributed high-yielding varieties of rice, along with necessary agro-inputs to rice farmers in order to sustain the mills at full capacity.

He also said that the government had established a tractor-hiring centre, and announced that “our government has opened all frontiers that will enable genuine investors to come to the state.”

The governor said that the Ebonyi International Market, which he described, as the longest high-rise building in the South-East had attained 98 per cent completion.

“We also constructed 34 ‘bridges of unity’ to link all local government areas to the state capital,” he added.

UK Expresses Readiness to Invest In Delta State

The British Government has expressed readiness to invest in Delta State and assist the state to develop its potentials to grow the economy.

British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Peter Carter who disclosed this in Asaba yesterday during a visit to the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, said that the United Kingdom was encouraged by the infrastructural development and incentives put in place by the administration.

According to him, the British Government is impressed with the infrastructures on ground especially the Asaba airport, the wastes incinerator plants, the Ogidigben Gas city project, the Warri Industrial Business Park, among others.

“I am here to personally see the infrastructural development progress you are making in the state and the business opportunities in the state for the British government and British businessmen,” he stated.

Furthermore, he said: “After seeing some structures put in place by the Uduaghan’s administration for investment to thrive, British businessmen as well as the British Council will be delighted to invest in the state.”

“I am convinced that the United Kingdom has a role to play in developing the economy of Delta State, your airport terminal (the Asaba International Airport) is head and shoulders above the ones I have seen in Nigeria. Asaba deserves to be the hub of aviation in Nigeria.”

“I congratulate you for your achievements and I look forward to growing the partnership between Delta State and the UK and the private sector for the mutual benefit of your state and my country.”

Carter promised to bring the British Council with its creative initiative and the creative sector in the state to promote and develop the creative potentials of the people of Delta State, adding: “the creative industry is a huge driver of a successful economy as it creates jobs, export talents and build essential human capital.”

In his remarks, Governor Uduaghan urged the British government to show more interest in developing the economy of Delta State.

Uduaghan observed that as traditional ally to Nigeria, the British government should show more commitment towards doing business in the state and country in general.

According to the Governor, British businessmen can invest in the Warri Industrial Park, the Ogidigben Gas City project, in the area of agriculture, solid minerals, among others, noting that the Nigerian population which is mainly made up of youths also, provides ready market for the industrialists.

“There is a historical tie between Nigeria and United Kingdom and we are happy to be part of that historical tie,” the Governor said, adding, “there is need for improved commercial activities between the UK and Nigeria especially, Delta state because, Chinese and India are now showing their presence in Nigeria and Delta State.”

“Delta State is not only the headquarters of Nollywood, we are naturally talented in the area of comedy and music and I am happy when you talked of the British Council and its creative initiative, we will work with them to improve our creative youths.”

Governor Uduaghan particularly urged British investors to key into the Ogidigben Gas City project and the Warri Business Industrial Park, assuring that despite the number of investors that have already started their projects in those areas, there will always be space for British investors, asserting, “Ogidigben Gas City is the future of the oil industry in Nigeria.”

He stated that the state is secured for business, observing that security challenges have been reduced to the barest minimum while institutional structures have been put in place to check corruption and give confidence to investors.

The Dein of Agbor Kingdom, Dr. Benjamin Ikenchuku has asked the Hungarian Government and private entrepreneurs to take advantage of the ongoing transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan and the rich cultural heritage of the people to invest in the country and strengthen its bilateral relations.

The Agbor Monarch made the call at the weekend in Budapest, Hungary when he was received at the Hungarian Parliament by the President, Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly, Zsolt Nemeth

His Majesty who is also the Chancellor, University of Illorin, said that despite the present security challenges confronting some parts of the country, Nigeria remains the investment destination in Africa, just as he assured that the challenge will soon become a thing of the past.

The Monarch who was also at the Ethnographic Museum where he flagged-off a three-month arts exhibition of Nigerian Monarchs anchored by a Delta-born photographer from Ogwashi-Uku, George Oshodi, said, “Nigeria has rich human resources and a people that are young and vivid, full of energy and constantly aspiring for a better quality life and enormous desire to contribute to making the country rich and prosperous”.

While underscoring the import of arts and culture in human existence, the Monarch stressed the need for the peoples’ culture to be sustained and reverenced, adding that it should be passed on to younger generation.

Receiving the Monarch to the Hungarian Parliament, the President, Foreign Affairs Committee of the Hungarian National Assembly, Mr. Zsolt Nemeth said both countries share common identity, hence, the need for sustained stronger bilateral socio-economic relations.

Mr. Zsolt Nemeth called on Nigerians to join forces with the Federal Government in the fight against terrorism, criminality and other vices currently plaguing the country, just as he assured sustained bilateral relations with Nigeria.

He said that the Hungarian government is already looking at the possibilities of investing into the Nigerian Energy and Gas as well as strengthen its education sector.

His words, “Your Majesty, I want to tell you that you are on a good trip to Hungary. With your coming, we hope that we can have practical cooperation in the field of energy and education. At present, here in Hungary, we have over 800 Nigerians who are studying in Hungary. Also, we have opened another 50 free of charge seats for Nigerian students who wish to come here and study by way of a scholarship scheme” Nemeth said.

On his part, the Director, Ethnographic Museum, Budapest, Dr. Lajos Kemecsi who spoke through an interpreter said with the exhibition of Nigerian Monarchs at the Museum, both countries are already on the pathway for greater and sustained socio-economic and cultural bilateral relations.

Commending the initiator of the exhibition and Delta state-born photographer, George Oshodi for the project, Kemecsi stressed the need for both countries to continue to assist the younger generation in realizing their God-given talents and wisdom.

I understand your point brother, but I'm very mindful of what I post. But, the article is about the bold step taken by the King to bring investment into his community. It is even interesting to note that Dein Ikenchuku has never denied his Igbo heritage. So as head of his people his word covers every Agbor nay Ika man. Moreover, we are talking about development in Igboland here and not just the South-East. And if uneven development will bring unity in Igboland, then we have no choice than tell the world our story - the investment potentials of Ala-Igbo.

Amaechi To Establish 10,000 Hectare Agricutural Farm Project in Oyigbo

Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has said his administration is ready to establish an agricultural farm project on 10,000 hectare of land in Oyigbo Local Government Area of the State, if the council and the people of the area provide the land.  This will boost food production in the State and create employment for the people of Oyigbo.
Governor Amaechi also disclosed that the model secondary school in Oyigbo being built by his administration will be ready for academic activities later this year.
The governor spoke during a Town Hall Meeting with the people of Oyigbo Local Government Area in the Oyigbo Council Headquarters, Afam on Wednesday.
“I want Oyigbo people to give me 10,000 hectares of land and I will give you an agricultural project that will employ people here.  The first step to solving economic crisis especially, crime is to provide people with a source of livelihood. So you need to provide for them a source of livelihood and for unskilled labour that is those who did not go to school  they constitute the highest number, the easiest way to engage them is to look at the area of agriculture.”
Governor Amaechi spoke on the things and projects his administration is doing and has done in Oyigbo. “I heard the Chairman say we should complete the secondary school. By September this year, just like we have opened Eleme Secondary School we should open the secondary school in Oyigbo.  it is just the hostels and the staff quarters that we need to finish work on”.
He also assured the people of steady light in the coming days. “You know we are working on power in Port Harcourt, one assurance I will give you is that I will direct them to come to Oyigbo and find out why you do not have light.  We are working on that, again give us one month, you know I am not a specialist in power, they are working in Port Harcourt, I will pull some of them out to come and see why you do not have light in Oyigbo and give you light”.
Amaechi said his administration has constructed some internal roads in Oyigbo Local Government Area.  He named such roads to include Anambra Street, Ijeoma Andy Street, Oga Imo Street, Obuchi road among other internal roads where work is ongoing.
Among the completed model primary schools in Oyigbo, the governor named them to include Community Primary School, Obeakpu, Community Primary School, Egburu, Community Primary School, Ayama, Community Primary School, Oyigbo North, Primary School, Oyigbo, Community Primary School, Obeama, State School, Oyigbo West, State School, Okpontu, amongst others; with two recently in AjuoNdoki and Okoloba.
He also promised to build one model primary healthcare centre in Afam to provide healthcare services for the people there.
The governor said education at the primary and secondary school level is free and gave instruction for suspension of school principals found to have collected any form of fees from pupils and students.
As an interactive forum, those who came forward to ask questions equally praised Governor Amaechi for his people-oriented projects in the state.
Earlier, the Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Hon. Prince Uche Felix Nwaeke in his welcome address noted that Governor Amaechi’s administrative policies have had positive impact on all Rivers people.
He said, “Your Excellency, on behalf of the Traditional Rulers, Elders, Women, Youth, Stakeholders and the good people of Oyigbo Local Government Area I heartily welcome you and your entourage to this very important Town Hall Meeting. You have positively impacted the lives of Rivers people, including Oyigbo Local Government Area.  Our people are therefore resolute in identifying with your giant strides and offer to continue lending their support and commitment to your efforts towards the enthronement of true democracy and the development of basic infrastructures needed for the emergence of a greater Rivers State.  Your programmes and projects are significant and monumental.
“That you were the Chairman of the Speakers’ Forum and now the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum in Nigeria is testimonial and a confirmation of your outstanding leadership qualities hinged on direct approach to issues and an unfeigned disposition to the enthronement of the best.  We are proud and happy to associate with you Sir”.

You are right in a way as Onitsha and Ogbaru form part of the Anioma heritage but so also is Oguta which is in Imo. In a nutshell all Igbos are one irrespective of geographical location but Igbos say "Ife onye kpolu onwe ya kam ga akpo ya" . It simply means you cannot foist ethnic identity on anyone even if you speak same language.

I did not type nonsense. Ikwerre people have declared that they are not Igbos and even went ahead to change town names, orthography and all that yet you are still living in the past. My mother is from Ikwerre and I spent a large part of my life in Ikwerreland and even more aligned to her village than mine. If I tell you the level of fight I've done even with a traditional ruler and my own cousins on this Ikwerre/Igbo issue, you will not believe it. I argued with them with regards to the fake Benin heritage which some are propagating citing lack of central leadership, absence of any Benin traits, their flat headedness (common among Igbos), their traditional red cap attire etc.

So in a nutshell just forget Ikwerre when planning anything Igbo.

You are an Isu man from Uga and have nothing in common with Anioma. Oguta is more Anioma than all parts of Igboland but it is unheard of us denying Igbo in public fora despite our mixed heritage. So my brothers are Asaba and Aniocha/Oshimili while Ndokwa and Ika should continue with self denial.

Well done Nwanne, may God give you more strength to keep doing this noble cause for the Igbo nation. But can you also diversify a little and maybe post articles on Anioma areas. Little minding those who try to paint us as land grabbers, can you also add Etche, Obigbo and Egbema areas of Rivers state - at least these ones don't deny their Igbo origin. Simply make it more encompassing. Also articles of Igbos doing us proud in the diaspora might be a good thing to talk about. My own little suggestion though.

Anambra plans to equip 500 youths with life-enhancing skills

Anambra State Go v e r nme nt has concluded plans to en­gage 500 youths in a programme aimed at equipping the youths with new technological skills at the Technology Incubation Centre in Nnewi, the leading auto city in Nigeria.

Disclosing this during a facility tour of the cen­tre jointly owned by the state and Federal Gov­ernments, Governor Wil­lie Obiano said the 500 youths would be trained in various skills for a period ranging between one and six months after which the beneficiaries would be provided with seed monies to establish their own small scale businesses and become self-reliant.

The governor ex­plained that it was part of his administration’s youth empowerment programme to equip Anambra youths with life-changing skills that would keep them gainfully employed all through their lives.

According to him, all unemployed youths of the state, who had yet to register with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Science and Technology were advised to do so with im­mediate effect to ensure a place in the programme. Chief Obiano, however, revealed that no fewer than 4,000 youths had already registered in the scheme.

Governor Obiano also revealed that his admin­istration had perfected plans for the establish­ment of two more tech­nological skills acquisi­tion centres in the two remaining senatorial zones of the state to open more access to youths of the state to take advan­tage of the scheme.

The governor also promised that his ad­ministration would un­dertake the upgrading of the centre to enhance its functionality and ef­ficiency, assuring that he would build more struc­tures to accommodate additional students and machinery, landscape the entire premises to give it a befitting look and ex­pand the capacity of the solar energy supply to the centre.

He, however, urged the Federal Govern­ment to assist the centre with more machines and equipment to boost its overall value to the na­tion’s economy, noting that when its potentials were fully harnessed, it could provide an endur­ing solution to the nig­gling challenge of unem­ployment in the country today.

Etugo Oil to Set Up $60m (N9.6 Billion) Petrochemical Plant in Abia

Etugo Integrated Oil and Petrochemical Industries Limited, an indigenous oil firm, is to establish a petrochemical plant, worth over $60 million in Mgbarakuma community in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.

The multi-product manufacturing plant expected to be completed in 12 months, would consist of a lube plant, plastic manufacturing plant, batteries, tyres and tubs as well as soap and detergent manufacturing plants.

Governor Theodore Orji, while performing the groundbreaking ceremony, Monday at the plant’s site, along Enugu – Port Harcourt Express Road, commended the management of Etugu Oil for investing in the State and promised to continue to assist the company to realise the project.

Orji urged other genuine investors to consider establishing in Abia, which according to him is secure and investors’ friendly.

Eboh Duke Okorie, commissioner for housing, Abia State, earlier in his address, observed that the establishment of the plant in the area, would provide job and related opportunities to the host community in particular and Abia State in general.

He also revealed that the State Government recently paid N20 million compensation to Mgbarakuma community for the 25 hectres of land they donated to the State, for the plant and other projects and appealed to the community to extend hands of fellowship to the company, by ensuring that the facility is protected.

Elizbeth Adeyemo, group head, Oil and Gas, Etugo Integrated Oil and Petro-Chemical Limited, in an exclusive interview with BusinessDay, revealed that the firm’s technical partners, Orelle Group of India, are already in the country, pointing out that the project, would be realised at the specified period of 12 months.
