It all depends on your discipline, the industry in focus and your career goals.
Taking engineering as an example, it is far more preferable in many instances to go for a masters than to get professional certifications.
For graduates with zero experience, oil companies will most likely choose masters degree holders over bachelors degree holders with professional certifications (assuming their performances at the interviews are all at par). A few notable firms in Nigeria also favour masters degree holders, eventhough the advert may simply state a minimum of BSc. Adverts doesn't always count. There is usually some level of PR considerations when putting up an advert, especially for big firms. It's the actual recruitment that matters at the end of the whole process.
The story is however different if you consider a course like accounting. A graduate with an ICAN or ACCA certification will most likely be placed over masters degree holder in accounting.
Another important consideration is that some fields require professional certification to be able to practice. In such fields, a masters may count for nothing.
That's why it's wise to consult widely before taking any step rather than making blanket conclusions that professional courses are better than masters degree, or vice versa.

Spot on @xfire..

For the Masters degree you mentioned with respect to Engineering field, the degree would preferable be from a foreign uni. MSc from a Nigerian Uni might not really give the person an edge.

Also fresh graduates must also consider whats obtainable at that very moment. ie A fresh graduate who wishes to go for a masters degree in a foreign university but has little or no money to do so; while applying for scholarships or trying to raise funds, twill be wise to really consider taking a professional course in a related field.

Just my opinion though..

Very true, preferably in US or Canada. All my former coursemates and friends that did their MSc in engineering in the US are all gainfully employed over there. With the recent boom in the US oil industry, the demand for engineers can only stay upwards.

Hello All,

Sometime last week I had an intelligent discussion with my colleagues about the above topic. Almost all vouched in favour of opting for a professional course as against a Master's degree or MBA which may likely come later.

Umpteen times fresh graduates rush towards gaining a Master's degree immediately they are out of school without having experience of the workplace at all. Some argue that this could be detrimental to the Master's degree studies since most of what will be taught is directly related to real experiences in the workplace

What do you think? Do you agree? Or are you of the opinion that once the fund is available for the Master's Degree, the young graduate should opt for it or rather go for a professional course in his/her field? Let's talk...

experience is better, professional course will get you stuck in a profession MSC is a bit versatile but experience is the best and above all SELF EMPLOYMENT IS THE ULTIMATE, no more answering sirs and querries and warning notices...but you need experience to move in

so do you have that?

A masters degree does not give you any real work experience . it only gives you an edge because you have foucsed on a particular area of interest unlike the first degree that covers basically all the aspect of that profession. A masters degree gives you an opportunity to research more on a particular area . Why people rush abroad for masters in naija is because of the high rate of unemployment and to further boost their skills .... I mean networking , team work and research which the Nigerian institutions don't offer you . Majorty of the entry level jobs are minimum a first degree , in a situation where a masters degree holder is competing with a bachelor's degree holder with say some months of experience and they have equal basic performance , the recruiters may tend to go for the bachelor's degree holder . you may have great knowledge about a profession but you may loose a position to someone with experience .... experience means putting your knowledge into practice.
How ever , not all professional courses are worth it .An Ican certificate gives you an edge over a masters degree in the accounting profession because the Ican leaves you with some work experience. In the engineering industry , some professional courses are not worth it , why because those courses requires some experience before you may understand those courses fully .. . on and on for different professions , the best thing is to understand you line of profession , talk to expert in that profession , they would help with the best advices.

Honestly it depends on the course of study! Like someone who study education and want to become a lecturer, for him opting for master immediately after his/her ist degree is the best option for him or her!
And again considering the way some organization do their recquirement wen it comes to job vacancy, I tink a master degree gives u an edge!
Though am not saying professional course is not good, but it depends on the individual and the course of study! Thank you!

Nice question... Anybody with experience wish to respond?
PROFFESSIONAL COURSE IS IT FOR engineering field.once you are tru wit a first degree, you have enough knowledge to gain employment, but your add professionality will sure give u edge over your peers
Re: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by omokab: 12:32pm On Nov 07, 2014
Professional course is by far better than master deg holders especially in the field of accounting.if you join a any govt work as a chattered accountant as an example you will be given level 10 but as a master holder you will be given level 9.A fresh graduate will join with level 8.Also as a chatered accountant you have opportunity to establish an auditing firm that is you can stay on your own,a master degree have no this opportunity.Anybody can have a masters certificate but not everybody have mind of becoming a chattered accountant because is too difficult to pass.Another area is that,if you do not have a professional certificate in some civil service you can't go beyond level 13 no matter any certificate you have. While you can't also be a director of finance with only masters certificate.

I contemplating on doing some professional safety courses so that I can increase my chances of getting employed now because I need o gather enough experience before I could master on any field.

I'm sorry but; i don't understand your question. I'm only pointing out to you that an ICAN does not give you any work experience… neither does an MSc in accounting.
