It is safe to say the OP is talking thru the perspective of a starved man, but he is not far from the truth either. The stadium may not beat some of the ones in SA and Angola, but it's sure a world class with a difference if the word 'Nigeria' is to be a factor 2 Likes |

Nigerian leaders always getting their priorities wrong since 1959. Billions of Naira spent on a stadium whereas maternal mortality is still high. No basic amenities of life no pipe borne water pry schools look like shanties no basic learning tools. How many well equipped pry health centres so they have in AK state. We need to fix basic thing before doing this. This is like America trying to go to the moon when many cities have untarred roads? 3 Likes |

Another white elephant project with no direct impact on the people. How many times will the stadium be used in a year? Build factories instead where the people can work everyday of the year. |

Hmm.....nice one. However, one of the reasons why NIGERIANS are daily short changed by their leaders is because majority don't even know the difference between what they want and what they need. Stadium is good but at what expense? One of the reasons why we keep saying this government is clueless is because of the penchant in celebrating minor things at the expense of major and needful things. For crying out loud, there is poverty in the land AND AKWA IBOM IS NOT EXEMPTED. Why a stadium? Now, this is not just criticism for the fun of it but simple logic. I do not, in any way, think that the very first problem of Akwa Ibom is that of a world class stadium. Ask yourself, HOW WILL THAT STADIUM BE PUT TO USE SUCH THAT GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY CAN BE OBTAINED? As of the last time I checked, Nigerian sporting activities have not reached that commercial status such that billions are raked in yearly especially when compared with other sport loving countries to warrant this kind of project. Yes, some people will quickly refer to football but can we say that our football is properly commercialised to warrant this kind of multi billion Naira project? Even in the countries where sporting activities are well commercialised, government tries as much as possible to avoid projects like this because of the cost involved. A good example is the UK where the recently built Olympic stadium has been concessioned to a football club (West Ham united) in order for cost to be maximised. By government's reasoning, West Ham football club will do a better job with the stadium than it (the stadium) remaining a government property with little or no use. Your guess is as good as mine on what will happen when a facility is not put into regular use. To those who are ignorantly celebrating this wastage called stadium, ask yourself if there is any commercial gains that will be made from the stadium. This is not rocket science but simple logic. How much of sporting activities would that stadium get in order to recoup the invested money? After all, capital projects like this one are supposed to bring back some profits. I can bet with any amount that our lack of maintenance culture in nigeria is the very first albatross of that stadium not to now talk of the uncertain political intrigues that will follow once this government quits and another one takes over. A flash back at the tinapa project in calabar would suffice here. The world celebrated it when it was completed and inaugurated but today, what happened to it? I would have loved a government like this, with so much money to spend, to have been more involved in pragmatic programs targeted at the people like building a world class hospital and accessible and affordable healthcare, good transport scheme, social security scheme for elderly, tax credit and relief etc. But like I said earlier, most NIGERIANS want good governance but they don't have a clue on what it means. They cannot differentiate between their wants and their needs and that's why these leaders give them just anything and they (the people) start celebrating. Until we start getting our priorities right in this country, we are not likely to make much progress as far as development is concerned. |

Chylo:What makes you think you know what you are talking about? Besides, long-windedness, does it occur to you that Akwa Ibom has clubs in the Nigeria leagues who would be using the facility? I don't like folks who talk for its own sake, as it were. The stadium is a general purpose facility which is expected to find application all through the year. Instead of jumping the gun and broaching a subject you apparently know little about, I expected you to have given the state government the benefit of doubt. Maybe you think Uyo is some kind of rural village. If you had known that Uyo is an emerging commercial and tourist hub boasting of such facilities as a functional airport, sundry five-star hotels and recreation centres and so on, then it wouldn't have been difficult for you to factor in the practicality of building a veritable landmark like a world class stadium. Oga specialist, abeg talk when your opinion is sought, or else keep mum... 1 Like |

Chylo: U have spoken the undeniable truth like u said, there are numerous oda areas to lay more priority than building a stadia that has little or no economic impact to the people. Still, i think this project is a legacy project that subsequent govt shud handle with utmost care. Besides, AKS has received lot of facelift in critical sectors. yet i believe there shud be more capital investment in sectors u highlighted to elevate the economic status of the people and the state. |

Congratulations Akwa Ibom but personally i think this money would have been invested in the Ibaka Sea Port knowing fully well the Impact it will have on Akwa Ibom Economy , it would have launched Akwa Ibom into the first 3 economically Important States after Lagos ,Rivers and Delta. AKwa Ibom's delay in the sea port and concentration on non economic project leaves the state in a tight situation considering the oil price slump and the uncertain future of Nigeria and the oil industry this leaves me wondering if the Governor and his economic advisers actually took the best decision in the interest of the state or the most politically expedient decision which is to deliver the stadium within that tenure and not allow the next governor to take the credit. As it is now Akwa Ibom finances still remain the same taking a very big blow from the fall of oil price and with an additional Liability which would require tax payers money to maintain and keep in shape , Akwa Ibom is not really a football sporting state like Abia and as such should have got its priorities right |

Chylo:Oga forget that thing! One of our major problems as Africans is our tendency to downplay our own accomplishments while lauding inexorably everything that comes out of the West. Granted that our society has an institutionalised problem with maintenance culture, but one is constrained to ask whether we need study the template offered by the Olympic stadium to know what to do with a new stadium built at a very massive cost? Is it not time we began to initiate a change of attitude towards Nigeria and her leaders? You see, it is wrong to assume whatever happens here has a negative default value. There are a lot of Nigerians getting it right in various spheres of human endeavour. Let us build on their examples instead of toeing the line of the Western media who invariably report negativity about Africa most of the time. |
