I believe igbo are mixed somewhere along they way they might not be aware of it. I met this nigeria igbo dude, he was thick(not fat) like AA types with caucasian body type and complexion and hair I have seen on people mixed with darker indians in my country. Could their claim to middle eastern origin have some truth to it? Then have you some with hazel eyes and a couple giving birth to a white kid. And from what I have seen light skin igbos do not often have typical west african features like Okonjo anybody observed this? .

If you've been to Igboland or have lived in Igboland before, those observations you made are normal things within Igbos! Igbo people's phenotype are a continuum from dark-skinned to light-skinned. In Nigeria, other tribes automatically refer to a light-skinned person as Igbo/'omo ibo' before even considering any other tribe they might actually be from. The dark-skinned ones tend to not be as dark as the Congolese or Sudanese people who are very dark in complexion.

Could you expand more on 'with the caucasian body type, complexion and hair'?. I'm interested in knowing exactly the features of those people you met to have you qualify their characteristics as such.

its possible some are mixed, however this might be from far back.

some capoids also appear mixed, so its a bit hard to tell where exactly the mixture might be from in the absence of any defined records.

Mike Tyson body type is caught between west African and Caucasoid. Serena William has thick caucasoid body type with ripped african muscles. Shaq O'Neil got white body type yet he is dark. Jill Scott has thick white body too. Michael Jordan has typical west african body type. Tupac had africa body type so Oprah. You wanna tell me that Hugh Njemanze with caucasoid features is of pure west African race? I think this partly explains the mixed looking Nigerians found in southern Nigeria. Nigeria was settled by a number of former slaves from the US, Brazil and in the 1800s. Am not sure most Nigerians are aware of this. Am doubting genetic studies out there on Nigeria.

Afro-Brazilian architecture in Lagos State : a case for conservation
Authors: Alonge, Marjorie Moji Dolapo
Issue Date: 1994
Publisher: Newcastle University
Abstract: The immigrants of African descent who began arriving in Lagos and Badagry in the early nineteenth century included not only Afro-Brazilians, but also Afro-Cubans, Afro-Americans, Afro- Canadians (freed slaves from Nova Scotia) and Sierra Leonians (Saros). Of these the Afro-Brazilians and the Saros constituted the largest and most dominant groups. The Afro-Brazilians were the descendants of African slaves (mostly from West Africa and Angola) taken to Brazil. They returned to West Africa between the 1820s and 1890s. Collectively, in Nigeria the Afro-Brazilians and the Afro- Cubans were referred to as `Brazilians' or Aguda (Yoruba word for Catholics) probably because the majority of both these groups were Catholics. The Saros were the descendants of Yoruba slaves from southwestern Nigeria. Some of these slaves were on their way to the Americas to be sold but were rescued by the British anti-slavery squadron along the West African coast. They were then resettled in Freetown, Sierra Leone, which was founded in the eighteenth century by an Englishman named Granville Sharp. Other Saros were African slaves (mostly of Yoruba origin) who have been in England since the early seventeenth century. They were repatriated to Sierra Leone after the abolition of slavery in Great Britain. After Lagos was ceded to the British by Oba Dosunmu in 1861, many more Saros were encouraged to return to Yorubaland by the colonial administration. The Saro community lived in the Saro quarter alongside the Afro-Brazilian community in the Brazilian quarter of Lagos. Like the Afro-Brazilians, they also produced a significant genre of architecture and a distinctive creole culture during the nineteenth century. The Saro architectural style was largely based on a combination of the British colonial style and the Yoruba traditional spatial arrangement. Although the Saros contributed immensely to the development of architecture in Lagos, they were not nearly as renowned for their building design and construction skills as the Afro-Brazilians were. This study is concerned primarily with the architecture created by the Afro-Brazilians as distinct from the Saros, whose architecture undoubtedly merits study in its own right.

That's wholly untrue. Igbo people's complexion mix isn't related to any admixture whatsoever pre or after slavery.

You're talking about slave returnees right? And this was after the abolishment of slavery in the 1800s right? How about we go back in time to way before during the 1600s and 1700s when Igbo slaves were being transported from Igboland to the Americas, a time when there were no foreign settlers (and still till now) and the entire trade exchange took place along the Niger Delta coastline. Ever heard of the phrase, 'red eboe' before? Are you aware that during the slave trade, Igbo slaves directly from West Africa were remarkably known to be 'yellowish' in color by other tribes and slave masters and were called 'red eboe'? These were slaves directly from West Africa with no admixture whatsoever. 'Red eboe' survived in America, Jamaica, Caribbean nations and other areas where Igbo slaves were sent to, and has been corrupted to 'red bone' which African Americans, Caribbean natives etc use to refer to any light-skinned person. Many sources and articles exist online on the yellowish nature of Igbo slaves. Simply google up 'red eboe' and read for yourself.

The yellowish nature of the Igbo predates to pre-slavery and counters your opinion.

Moreover, the ex-slave returnees were mostly Yoruba in ancestry and settled mostly in Lagos state (Yorubaland). Igbo ex-slave returnees were few and many avoided Igboland altogether (owing to their fear of being subjected to slave status for they understood Igbo traditions well) and headed for Equatorial Guinea where they settled instead. If so, why is there a much lower incidence of light-skinned folks in Yorubaland than Igboland that received fewer slave returnees?

Either igbos are evolving into the caucasoids or they could be telling us people who brought E1b1a to west Africa were light skin north East Africans. Igbo retaining light skin from north east Africans while other E1b1a bearers lost it. That possibility bothers me to no end. LOL! There is another case of a Nigerian woman married to a white man giving to a 100% white kid. How is that possible? The woman must have some Eurasia admixture for that to happen. Where is the scientific explanation for this phenomenon? I still believe Igbs are mixed somewhere. A proud people just can't up and claim middle eastern origin without some truth to it.

No one can say for sure the actual cause of the light-skinned phenomenon of Igbo people. But one thing is for sure - the phenomenon has long existed in Igboland and predates initial contact with Europeans during the slave trade and colonization. It is well known that in some territories in Africa, especially along the sea coastline, European traders kept African concubines and sired interracial children with them but this was rare in Igboland, given that majority of Igboland is situated in the hinterlands of Southern Nigeria, and, by virtue of this fact, had very little direct contact with Europeans during the slave trade. Foreign slave traders at the Bight of Biafra restricted their purchases mostly at the coastline areas ie Opobo, Bonny, Calabar. Igbo slaves, which were sold en-masse during the slave trade, were mostly captured or kidnapped from the hinterkands by fellow Africans and transported down to the coastline to be sold off. A best example of this journey would be the slave narrative of Olaudah Equiano on his harrowing but interesting slave experience from Igboland to the Americas.

I've seen a light-skinned Igbo woman married to a man of middle-eastern origin with babies looking exactly like her husband in complexion, with not the slightest indicaation whatsoever of being a biracial. There are 2 recorded cases of 2 dark-skinned Igbo couples giving birth to what seemed like caucasian babies.

First case:

http://www.africaresource.com/rasta/sesostris-the-great-the-egyptian-hercules/black-genes-pale-skin/comment-page-1/
Second case:

Another case by an African couple from Congo.

The Igbo population is obviously interesting, with a lot of genetic manifestations showing up here and there. What's more interesting is that the stark light-skinned phenomenon is much less present in its neighbouring tribes. However, no official studies have been carried out into the investigation of this phenomenon among the Igbo people of Nigeria.

I heard about that lady to who had a white child, she is igbo and her husband white british. she has some european ancestry down the line. I believe to that igbo's, not all but many of them are mixed with white down the line. even ones that are recent mix they claim as full igbo as well, like this actress http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Madekwe , this actress is only 1/4 igbo but I remeber a guy a few years back was claiming she was pure igbo until I checked her history and found out she was mixed. Many igbo's claim being connected to jewish people and etc so maybe theres some truth to it I guess

How do you mean Igbos with AA features? Or AAs with Igbo features? Who came from the other? Igbo or AAs? Igbos are 'originally' black and thus, the model stereotype because without any admixture whatsoever, they have physical traits which AAs have to have with partial admixture from other non-african ancestries.

You're right but I prefer to think of it the other way round because African Americans partially came from Igbo and so it is proper to say they have resemblance with the Igbos, their partial ancestors, than the Igbos have resemblance with them because we did not come from them, we partially gave birth to them.

I meant it that way, it just came out different. I wasn't trying to insinuate that African Americans gave birth to Igbos and Southeastern Nigeria as a whole.

Mike Tyson body type is caught between west African and Caucasoid. Serena William has thick caucasoid body type with ripped african muscles. Shaq O'Neil got white body type yet he is dark. Jill Scott has thick white body too. Michael Jordan has typical west african body type. Tupac had africa body type so Oprah. Do Igbo women have big behinds typical of west african types or flat like ethiopians.^_^

Is this guy AA or igbo

These light skinned people do not have features associated with west african types. They seem to have narrow noses and elongated Caucasoid heads.

Man, shut your dumbarse up. You know nothing of genetics or history.

A substantial amount of AAs of partial/full Igbo ancestry keep visiting Igboland each year. Prominent Hollywood stars such as Danny Glover, Wesley Snipes, Danny Whitaker etc who have paternal Igbo ancestries have all visited Igboland. Last year 28 AAs with Igbo ancestries visited Igboland. This year another different set of about 18 of them also paid a visit to Igboland.

Other Hollywood stars with part Igbo ancestries are Blair Underwood, Chris Tucker, Quincy Jones etc.
DNA testing has continued to prove Dr. Chambers Douglas' research conclusion right, that 'at least 60% of African Americans have at least 1 Igbo ancestor'. If that hurts you so much, go and hug the nearest transformer.

I never said that. Neither did I do the research or the DNA testings. I'm only reiterating facts and I'll continue to standby it much to the chagrin of those who choose to be blinded to the real facts.

where are all these AA of Nigerian descent? in the bottom od the sea for sure.

Danny Glover, yes Igbo descent. but about Wesley Snipes, that was LIE. Wesley Snipes as Eddy Murphy are all done in Cameroon and the dust had long ago settled down on that.

then how is that every time we watch the ancestry ceremonies the Tikar / Bamileke in Cameroon follow by Mende in Sierra Leone steal the show in result in many cases.? in Churches you name it!! I heard most of Nigerian slaves finished in the bottom of Ocean. the were shoot. hang, grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin ;Dhunt down and killed by many slave masters for running away. being rebellious, unproductive, lazy . hahahahahaha!! many did not make it to raise family. that explains a lot. undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

My understanding is that when two populations inhabit a particular area soon enough there will be people who mix with each other.

So for instance a Jamaican Igbo will not be as pure as a Nigerian Igbo and may have features from other ethnicities or races.

Yet I would never deny the great influence the IGBO had on Jamaican linguistics.

On a video by Dr Kittles on Youtube they did conduct a Mt DNA test on Mae Jemison and could not specify her tribal origins.

The same thing is happening to many other African Americans!

Everything is not as clear cut as you may like it to be.

If you research on a convicted rapist by the name of Delroy Grant who offended between 1992 and 2009.

At one of his crimes he left DNA behind and this was sent to the US to analysed.
The geneticist's concluded he was of Caribbean extraction and they felt that we was from one of the Windward islands.

Though Grant was from Jamaica the Geneticists were not far off. The were correct in the fact he was Caribbean.
He was not mistaken genetically for a native African. This tells us that there is something unique in the DNA of Caribbean people,
which has experienced changes, mutations and admixture since the time we were in Africa.

Of course you are correct. If you move Millions of People from different Tribes and Ethnicities and place them together there will be Genetic crossover.

Have a look at this link which confirms just that.

Hello all.

Here is another interesting video from Geneticist Dr Kittles who explains the Genetic structure of the African American Population.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYv5Ig7WglA

If you go back 14 generations you have 16,384 Ancestors. The Y DNA TEST and Mt DNA test only show DNA from Father to Son
or from Mother to Daughter. It will not show you what Mothers pass to their Sons or what Fathers have passed to their daughters therefore missing thousands of persons DNA in your ancestry.

Mt and Y DNA is only a small Fraction of your Ancestry and by NO MEANS all of it.

Thank you. I have that material but I withheld dropping the link since. That's the same Mildo Hall he claimed attacked Dr. Douglas Chambers.

I just discovered another PDF book, 'Slavery in Maryland' released by the Museum of Maryland, in conjunction with the University of Maryland(one of the top schools in the US). In the book, despite not focusing much on African Ethnicities and slave numbers, however they gave the most credence to the Igbo group for their participation in the slave trade.
