mzilakazi: Nigeria spends 7 billion dollars on defence, we recently placed and other for over 40 attack and transport helicopters, additional T-84OPLOT M, T-72 and hundreds of additional Armoured vehicles. The Scorpion, super-tucano are all COIN based/ LICW jets. The appropriate jets to fly for the sort of conflicts we are currently engaged in. 7 billion dollars is well above your defence budget. Besides, that Arhlac is a piece of tin-pot crap. No military needs that thing. It would surely be a monumental failure, no one's going to buy that crap. 1 Like |

Henry120:indeed.the nigerian government also plans to send astronauts to space by 2018/2019,we will soon have a moon-flag.no more depending on those other three satellites that are partially controlled by foreigners.when these plans come to fruition, nigeria would be the first black nation to create and propel a spy-satellite into space.perhaps we can now talk about aiding clueless soweto republic in doing the needful. 1 Like |

MikeCZAR: I'm telling you it's crap, because it is a piece of crap metal excuse for a plane. Nobody would buy that thing, this is a fact. The Scorpion out-classes it in every department. Nigeria eyeing the Textron Scorpion ISR/ light attack jet. "The Scorpion is an American light attack and Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) jet aircraft.[1] The aircraft is being developed by Textron AirLand, LLC, a joint venture between Textron and AirLand Enterprises, LLC." It's in the same class as the L-39ZA, Alpha Jet, MB- 339. Crew: 2 Length: 43 ft 6 in (13.26 m) Wingspan: 47 ft 4 in (14.43 m) Height: 14 ft (4.3 m) Empty weight: 11,800 lb (5,352 kg) Max takeoff weight: 21,250 lb (9,639 kg) Fuel capacity: 6,000 lb (2,722 kg) Powerplant: 2 × Honeywell TFE731 Turbofan, 4,000 lbf (18 kN) thrust each Performance Maximum speed: 450 kn (518 mph; 833 km/h) Ferry range: 2,400 nmi (2,800 mi; 4,400 km) Service ceiling: 45,000 ft (14,000 m) Stall speed: less than 95 knots[41] Armament Hardpoints: 6 with a capacity of 6,200 lb (2,800 kg),[21] and an internal bay with a 3,000 lb (1,400 kg)[20] of armaments and other stores, Bombs: precision and non-precision munitions My take: I've consistently argued that, although 4 Gen. Multi-role fighters are a fantastic asset to have, the Nigerian Airforce does not currently require a them. 4th Gen fighters cannot provide CAS, they are too fast, expensive to run for the sort of conflict we are currently engaged in, expensive to maintain and are in this sort of conflict a disposable asset. The scorpion is a 4 Gen. Light attack/ ISR/ trainer aircraft is better suited for our current operational needs. It has more modern sensors, targeting system an impressive ISR capability, than say the SU-25, although not as protected. The plane can loiter at 15,000 feet, higher than enemy AAA. At $20 million dollars, it isn't cheap, but it's operational costs are significantly lower than that of other more traditional 4 Gen. Multi-role fighters in the market. The array of precision guided munitions available to the Scorpion is also quite impressive. It can carry, hell-fire anti-armour missiles, paveway LGB's, SDB 1 and 2, JDAMS, MK 81/MK 82 iron bombs, G-CLAW, Zuni and hydra 70mm rockets. 1 Like |

patches689: Bwhahahaha Nigerian army has domestically upgraded our Scorpion tanks to 90mm gun, done in Bauchi City factory Nigeria circa year 2012. You thought Nigeria cannot upgrade heavy calibre guns? LOL, Nigeria is silently more advanced than South Africans ever imagine. LOL ! We even changed the whole engine from diesel to petrol to increase speed, the interior is also changed, Nigerian Scorpion tanks are NOT the old 1994 British scorpion tanks anymore, we have done local home grown massive upgrade. LOL ! Nigeria locally upgrades heavy guns to higher calibre with longer range, you didn't know that, Domingo Block-Head .

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by Patchesagain: 1:15pm On Nov 28, 2014 |
Henry120: Comparing the scorpion to the AHRLAC is comparing apples to oranges. Fourth Gen multi-role fighters are better. Scorpion will be eaten alive in any inter-state conflict. Its a short sighted band-aid for your inadequate aifroce. |

Henry120:Support your claims please. Quote something from the paper represented by the company on the reasons for the development of the aircraft. It will out sale the Scorpion that's a fact. The logistics behind keeping a jet aircraft are massive. Aircraft like the AHRLAC and Super Tucano can operate in tough conditions. Make a list of the "departments", you judged and compared both planes on: |

Re: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by MikeCZAR: 1:22pm On Nov 28, 2014 |

Henry120: That's a lie, Nigeria is not richer than SA. it only much bigger GDP meaning they have a much better purchasing power than SA because of their bigger population. Nigeria defence budget has only became better this year now that the country is deeply plunged into insurgency. |

Patchesagain: There was consistent prove to validate all of them. Aircrafts coming into Nigeria for evaluation purposes, nothing odd about that. BMP-2, confirmed T-72, confirmed T-84 OPLOT confirmed. |
