Boxing: Obiano endorses ‘Return of Champions’

ANAMBRA State Governor, Willie Obiano, has put his weight behind the struggle to revive boxing in the country by accepting to host the first world boxing title fight in Nigeria in recent years.

The boxing extravaganza will see World Boxing Organisation’s (WBO) International Light Middleweight champion, King Davidson Emenogu, fighting for the World Boxing Federation’s (WBF) interim middleweight world title at the Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, the Anambra State capital on Boxing day, December 26.

The six-bout promotion will also see some top professional boxers based abroad returning home to showcase their talents to Nigerians.

The event, being promoted by Emmaco Sports Limited and tagged ‘Return of Champions,’ will also feature current WABU light heavyweight champion, Jude Illo, in a WBF light heavyweight title.

Current WBF welterweight champion, Gifted Cole, will be going for the vacant WBA PAN Africa middleweight title.

The night will also see current Commonwealth super middleweight champion, Isaac Ekpo defending his title.

All the listed fighters have signed on for the promotion and according to the promoters of the event, the foreign boxers will be announced next week during a press conference in Awka.

The organisers also disclosed that top former Nigeria-born world boxing champions, Herbie Okechukwu Hide, a two-time WBO world heavy weight champion, as well as former WBO Champion, Henry Akinwande and Reggie Johnson will also be present as ringside guests during the ‘Return of Champions’.

There will also be lots of side attractions by some top Nigerian musical acts and Nollywood Stars during the event.

Governor Obiano recently put his signature on the World’s biggest boxing gloves, which is going round the country to promote the big event.

The Governor says he is using the opportunity thrown up by the sporting event to invite the world to Anambra State, adding that he wants to ensure boxing as a sport in Nigeria regains its lost glory like in the days of Dick tiger, Hogan Bassey, Jerry Okorodudu, Obisia Nwankpa and Ngozika Ekwelum, amongst others.

Nice pic! I just love the concentration of tall buildings in Onitsha. The structures are already in place; they may look a little old, doesn't matter. If you look at pictures below with similar setting but in a western country; you will notice that the buildings are equally old. What is important now is our streets are updated to modern standards with....well paved road, dark street lights ( great for non-major road like this), cover those medieval open drainage system that take space for nothing and create side walks off of it....you will be surprised by how much the street width will be increased...more roomy. The ground floors of these buildings can serve as restaurants, convenience stores, pharmacy, bars, bistro, basically anything that will create a well-planned community and great night life. The top floors will serve as residential apartments. This is how modern city planning is done today in most countries. The old patios should be replaced with modern patios...these modern patios you see below with green or black canopies are actually cheaper than the welded gate ones you see in the first picture...Bida Road in Onitsha.

Gov. Obiano is on the right track...I saw pictures of Iweka Onitsha this morning and I couldn't believe it. I'm very impressed. I see they are also painting the Niger bridge truss system...these are the type of maintenance culture that we need! Kudos to him! All he needs to do is update most Anambra infrastructure and our streets to international standards and leave the development to individuals. Anambra people have money like water...largest concentration of millionaires in Nigeria are from Anambra. We are getting there!

First pic...Bida Road, Onitsha. I'm impressed by the tall structures but the infrastructure and street needs to be updated to pics below!
Second pic...similar street like Bida, same old structures but well planned...paved road, street lights, road markings in a western country.
Third pic....another street like Bida however well planned in a western country.
Fourth pic...modern green canopies on patios...give the street a beautiful look.
I can see and feel the hunger in you for development. I pray one day your wish will come to pass.

If only they can at least pack those sand dunes on every road. It makes our road dirty and dusty. We have lots of good roads covered with sand especially that of Bida and Niger street.

The governor asking people to repaint their houses is a welcome development but the government should first try and reduce the level of dust in the state by employing road sweepers and construction of quality inner city roads with under drainage sidewalks. The reason why most houses in onitsha looks old and out of touch is because of this and people wont be motivated to keep painting their houses if the city is dusty.

Good idea!. Let us start to talk about it!. Obiano is very credible, but we need to keep him on his toes!. This rural Road In Ozubulu Ekwusigo lga can be like Roads in New-York or Europe if there is Side-Walk & Street lights on it!. The little sand on it needs to be removed!

Anambra obodo oyibo..leading the pack in all spheres of development. Very soon only brand new cars will be on Anambra roads. cheesy cool

ducii:
When Nigeria, on October 3, 2013, announced the introduction of a new automotive policy aimed at discouraging the importation of wholly assembled automobile and encourage local manufacturing, it seemed like a tall dream, but building on recent local assembly successes by Hyundai and Nissan was indigenous company Innoson’s unveiling of its new brand of cars last week.

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited founded by Nigerian industrialist, Chief Innocent Chukwuma unveiled its new cars – IVM Umu, IVM Umu and IVM Uzo manufactured at the company’s Nnewi plant in Anambra State, South east Nigeria.

IVM FOX

IVM UMU

70 percent of the parts used in manufacturing the cars were locally sourced, heralding the emergence of a local car manufacturing industry that will in the nearest future serve the region. Already, the company has disclosed it plans to take its brand to neighbours in West Africa, with the Republic of Benin and Ghana on its radar. The company had earlier impressed with its trucks and buses.

The range of Innoson brands are already enjoying patronage locally, something lacking in the past, which has stifled the growth of several indigenous manufacturers. But across Africa, locally-made goods are beginning to earn respect and desired patronage through quality assurance and competitive pricing.

Former governor of Nigeria’s Anambra State where the Innoson plant is located, Dr Peter Obi had become a frequent buyer of the locally made vehicles by the time he left office. Founder of the car-making company, Chukwuma said Obi still patronizes his company.

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) is expected to soon take delivery of Pickups made by Innoson.

PICK UP for the Nigerian Road Safety Corp

The country’s minister of trade and investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga at the event held in Nnewi, commended Innoson Vehicles Company (IVC) for producing the first Nigeria-made vehicles. He said such an investment is necessary to expand the country’s manufacturing frontiers.

21 auto-companies have already signed commitments with technical partners to set up local assembly operations, according to Nigeria’s National Automotive Council (NAC).

All work and no play.... The non existent nightlife had made Onitsha seem like the only enjoyment therein is just sitting in a beer parlour and emptying crates of beer. Now the perspective is going to change.

There are too many hausa people around Bida road. And they have their Mosque close by too. I am sure they are the early settlers in that area. No wonder most of the streets around the place was named after northern names..from Bida to Haruna to Kano to Sokoto roads etc. This can turn Onitsha to a "no man's land" just like Lagos.. grin cheesy

So many of them around Sokoto road, Bida road, Haruna and Kano streets, around Creek road and Niger street Fegge and around bridgehead where they have their section too. I guess most are early settlers. Turn Onitsha to no man's land, they know it's not possible. Why do you think they cross into Asaba at the slightest sneeze whenever gbege starts?

Since they are part of the early settlers they may claim ownership. Because those streets and roads were not named after northern names for nothing. They must have had some stakes to warrant that.

Actually, I knew some Hausa guys that could speak Igbo when i lived in Fegge as a child.
If Hausa in Onitsha will call Onitsha home, and invest in it, and convince their brothers at the federal government to stop the war against the SE development by blocking any federal amenities meant for the area, then we truly have a country to be proud of.
But what i have just said is wishful thinking. Therefore, Onitsha will never be a no man's land because no other ethnic group in Nigeria wants to join hands to invest in it and develop it.

Even if they want to claim anything in Alaigbo, a hotbed like Onitsha will be the last place they'll think of. You remember what happened in 2006 riots abi you don forget?
