Guys I find the fences inside Liberty Estate repulsive. Such place does not need internal fencing since the premises has a communal fence. We have become so obsessed with fencing to the level of stupidity. Pls pardon my language.

What the estate needs in 24 hour security presence that would monitor the movement of people in and out of the estate. People living there should employ the services of 4-6 security guards instead of employing individual guards. That is how white people create jobs. By security guards, I do not mean Abokis. Our people should be employed.

Then they should bring down those internal fences and give space for side walks. The problem with our fences is that they take the place of sidewalks and so residents struggle to walk freely within within their neighbourhood.

I look forward to a time when every house in Enugu will not require private fencing, instead neighbourhood fencing will be the order of the day.

This part of your contribution got me interested for the simple reason of one important factor that was missing in it . YOU.
Take spyder the producer of this thread for example he does not depend on the government for his livelihood. He goes out there and bring home the bacon.
You have identified the states resources, why can't you use your own intellect, connections and other resources to exploit those resources in your State Enugu and employ these "teeming unemployed" people in the state. Am sure your kind is what the state really needs. To bring home the bacon. If you haven't got the news yet. Here it is. Governments do not produce jobs but enabling environment for people like spyder to prosper
Thanks and be well

Yea, sure. This is quite smart. Instructive too. We should bring ideas of what we can do as individuals.

If you say that and mean we should leave government alone, I say, em em em. Well, should we leave government completely out? And me, ordinary me nwa Omeje begin to exploit coal deposits in Ezimo, Limestone/Cement in Amechi-Idodo, Gas in Ugwuoba and so on? Okay I get the drift -leave government alone... don't even utter a word and let them do whatever they like with our common wealth -like dealing with items that don't come anywhere near the real needs of the people. Perfect!

Well, crazy Amaechi once said that those in government steal public funds because we, the public, allow them.

Now I am confused. I thought it was global best practice for civilians (civil society) to hold government accountable. In fact before then, help in shaping policies and programmes of government.

Now it is clear that I have just been taliking to myself.

Ok. Let's leave them

But just before we finally leave them, I give you a case study of two States -Akwa Ibom and Enugu. Of all the differences in their financial status, etc. there is one uniting set of factors. They are States where the incumbents have pursued pipedreams for their people and backed it with heavy meadi blitz. Akwa Ibom -uncommon transformation; Enugu -massive (Enugu) urban infrastructure upgrade. Meanwhile unemployment poverty rates in the States continue to sky-rocket. Elitist -Elitism, you choose. Whats the reward? When it was time to call on the people, the people were on the other side. How come the uncommon transformer is fighting in trenches trying to get a successor in and how come Chime of Enugu is failing woefully in holding an ordinary State Chapter of the Party intact. Go also to Ekiti and find out why a PhD holder sitting governor was upstaged by a man that started as a bus conductor.

The choice remains ours

You give government the very leverage you complain about when you allow them to be in control of those resources. If you are in control or partly in control with many people under your employment then you have leverage over the government. All it takes is for you to be the Innoson of coal and other resources

No here are the choices for the like minds like yours.

1. William Boeing like in Boeing aircraft employs 250,000 people
2. Microsoft as in bill gates employs over 150000 people
3. Toyoda as in Toyota cars employs over 300000 people.

The list is too long
But the uniting factor is that they created the "common wealth" you are screaming about without the government and now when they sneeze the government listens.
You know nothing stops anyone from besting the list above, but first one have to roll up their sleeves and grab the shovel or whatever and get to work with mininal noise.

You know quite well that I decided to take it easy with you. Comparing apples to oranges is a crafty tool of disinformation.

Nothing, hear me loud, NOTHING, can substitute the role of the State. I was interested in how to better focus the role of State. Mind you, Enugu has an economy that is dominated by State. So better society is much plausible if those in charge of State craft are properly focused and primed to serve the people.

Now you have listed American success stories, which are naturally in America that has remained the world no 1 success story. Toyota brand named after the city of Toyota in Japan is agreat success story of Asia's greates success story, Japan.

In each of the examples you gave, there is a nexus with a government that is able to carry its own weight. For instance, would you also list out the number of schemes that US Govt has for supporting entrepreneurs and budding entrepreneurs, not venturing into a vibrant venture capitalism sector that basically hunts down upstarts with great idea. An earthquake occured in Japan, destroying major arterial roads and the over 200km road was fixed within a span of 10 days. Your government is still telling stories on East-West Road, Enugu-Onitsha Road, Okigwe Port Harcourt Road, etc. and your solution to it all is leave them alone.

Just like we were told then, as biafrans, that we could defeat well-armed federal troops with cutlasses and clubs. Bros, if you were part of Ojukwu's propaganda machine headed then by Chukwumerije with late ace spin doctor radio announver, Okon Okon Ndem, pls say so. But the shocker for you is that it is over 45years dated. It won't work in modern day society.

It will help for us to define and agree the role of the State. I do not agree with you that all we need to do is to leave government alone to do what it pleases. That is not what happens in the US. Get your facts right.

When we have a thread to discuss individual ingenuity and what people can do with their bare hands, we all head in and bring in beautiful thoughts. Right here, I was of the belief that the nice pics courtesy of goodman Spyder880 could be put in context, in the right frame as a lopsided effort of a team that could have done much better.

Now, you won't go far tutoring me or anyone about how to be self reliant. I will be the happiest man on earth if Ebonyi is actually progressing like your saying, nobody is more Igbo than others and its stupidity for anybody to feel such but some people like to feel inferior and blame others for their woes.

Premier Eastern Nigeria-Umuahia.
Governor East Central State-Afikpo.
Governor Anambra State-Akpugo.
Governor Anambra State-Udi

Tell me how Anambra is feeling inferior when all the people that have been governing Igboland are coming from other parts while Anambra holds the wrong end of the stick?
The only Anambra that governed Igboland were not elected but appointed, Emeka Ojukwu and Ukpabi Asika.

Tell me how they are feeling superior without conering those positions yet they had the political and intellectual heavyweights at their disposal?

Let me tell you guys, onye Anambra is too busy to be clannish, the local govt chairperson in Ogbaru LG was Mrs Callister Nwachukwu from Mbaise, go to Onitsha and see how Ideato people are running the offices.
Anambra is feeling superior and Jim Nwaobodo went to PDP convention and started speaking Hausa so that he will get back at Ekwueme, this is how Mbaise people refused Rev Okpalaeke from being the Bishop of Ahiara bc he is from Awka but now an Mbaise man is the VC of UNIZIK and Awka people are going their normal businesses, have your heard Awka people conspiring and backstabbing?
All these things that are going on we knew them but chose not to give any damn.
Orange Drug from Imo State built coy in Anambra, Tonimas from Anambra built coy in Abia, nobody has being caged, recolonized or sent to somalia except you insecure people feeling inferior and blaming others for your woes.

my dear i love this, if all of us can think like this then what's the problem of some states being superior to others. My stand has always be that all Igbos are equal irrespective of the state you come from.

If you really care about the poor in your state. Then start a large company to employ them and stop waiting for someone to do it for you.

When I was discussing expanding the economy, I was talking about the role of State, and not for me to be fed. I was precisely discussing the 'environment' -the enabling environment, Sir.

There is a fundamental flaw in your pitch and I fear it may not be fixed b'cos I read you as a theorist.

For the umpteenth time, we allow the State to drift when we fail as a people in the role of civil society in shaping government action. We cannot leave them alone. We have to be part of policy debates, public presentation of draft statutes, public finance and appropriation reviews, etc. That is is how it works best.

In your first post, you said you failed to see the most essential ingredient being the role of the individual (You and I). I left it because it was unfortunate that you failed to see it in the ensuing act of engaging in debates that is capable of transforming public policy. If we had progressed to discuss rural development, perhaps the next commissioner for rural development could pick a few points.

But you chose to debate out of context. That is what, in the olden days, was termed op. Now op, especially here means original poster. I actually meant the old "out of point"

Now if you wish to switch the discussion to how individuals can excel, fine, but it is a different topic and I would most likely take a different pitch than asking Enugu kids to emulate Ford or George Soros when we lack the enabling investment plank form.

With hope that you will retool and refocus on what will be beneficial to very many, can we now discuss "the role of government which IS TO PROVIDE ENABLING ENVIRONMENT". Or would you, in your usual character, say it is entirely up to me? Retool and the discussion will become useful. How can government perform its role, which is, to provide the right environment for private enterprise to thrive? How can next government in Enugu State improve the overall competitiveness of the State in the global market place? And lets see whether the answer will be macadamized thoroughfare and patachy, overpriced made in China traffic lights basically dumped on hapless ignorant people whom you wish to continue to be ignorant so that the fleecing of our commonly owned wealth will continue endlessly.

@Centje you know this is a big fallacy and I'm sure you know I will pick it out when you spew it.

Chime stopped fighting when he lost all. ALL I said. He lost out, forget that lame repacking of the greatest loser in Enugu politics by his lame aides who could offer no help to him, even a lame one. Amaka is a Diaspora dunce, I hope you know. She was recruited to open doors of international investment and aid into Enugu. What did she achieve? If she did her work, Chime wouldn't be borrowing billions in dying minutes. Amaka sat and Ekweremmadu defeated Chime in Diaspora Enugu election. Together with Jude Akubuilo. Now he has also defeated him at home. You see have the facts and figures. There is no nobility in Chime. Its just a shame. See the problem. Chime is surrounded by buffoons and defended by re-tarded chimps like you.

Why are you wasting eye shadow on a corpse, Centje? Chime: Dead he is for sure and fast proceeding to political rigor mortis. Just free us, abegi.

What was your noble Chime looking for seeking to go to the Senate? Was that not avarice? Someone who despises people and practically locked himself in inside the government house and who did nothing for his people of west district, just doing Enugu big boy and paving, painting and studding Enugu city center streets while his wine tapper kith and kin of Udi continue to clime and fall to their death from palm trees. What is Udi know for and how has he helped to modernise or progress it?

Please educate yourself by reading the real gist under the right heading below. Lame face-mending cannot assuage the disaster for which Chime connotes today -a disaster long predicted, anyway:

PDP Senatorial Tickets: Govs Uduaghan, Chime Forced Out By Power Play

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) begins its primaries to choose its candidates for the National Assembly elections, an intense powerplay, intrigues and upsets have forced two frontline governors to abandon their senatorial ambitions. Barely 48 hours to the party’s senatorial primaries, governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Uduaghan and his Enugu State counterpart, Sullivan Chime, lost in the power tussle in the state.

I lost strength to reply you after reading your posts because you keep roving. But to give you the appropriate psychotic pills, I decided to reply you. Don't think I've forgotten who you are. You're a die-hard loyalist of chimaroke nnamani, and any thing positive from sullivan chime gives serious palpitations. If Chime was an average nigerian politician, with his power of incumbency, he would tear enugu apart and frustrate Ekweremadu, after been denied senatorial seat. Politics has never been cool in enugu as it is in the last 8years, we all know how it was during chimaroke's government. We are not appreciating chime's government for only infrastructure but also for non-infrastructural changes he's made in enugu state. Some of your posts has minutes of sense but your bitter heart will not allow you present them in a manner that will incite constructive discussion. Like someone said earlier on, government provide enabling environment for investors, that's the way forward for nigeria. Where is nipost, nitel, nigercem, anamco?? Now, compare those companies to DHL, MTN, ibeto and innoson that are privately owned. Chime is not a fool for the direction he took, he clearly knows what he is doing for the state. And by time the merits of his 4 point agenda start coming, you would have forgotten him.

I bolded that part of your post because I want to bring to your notice that I don't engage people that resort to insult. You've insulted a lot of people on this thread, you are lucky to be replied, 'cause we usually hold down our ignore button for people like you. Desist from insults and have a civilised discussion, that's what we do here. We say the wrongs and most time proffer solutions. No one said chime is an angel or enugu is now london or free of problems, but we appreciate what see, commend conscious effort been made by chime's administration, keep hope alive, and believe that we can still have a politician close, in qualities, to those we see in countries with advanced democracy.

Read eaglechild and cjrane post again, this time, slowly and think deeper into what they posted, cheers!

eaglechild:

You have actually made some genuine points but you also fail to realise the reality on ground.

Nigeria still has a very long way to go, we need to start somewhere. We may be resource rich but we are still a poor country.

Chime defined his priorities when he came into office which included revamping of the state capital with upgrading of roads , security and I believe provision of potable water.

He vehemently stuck his goals and has largely achieved it.

He did not deceive himself by claiming to be able to solve every problem of the state, rather he looked at his budget and set realisable goals which he pursued.

Now he has succeeded in creating a fairly conducive environment which has even put Enugu on the world map. No one will want to do business in an insecure environment with rundown infrastructure.

Government is a continuum and it is left for the next gov to even take the state further.

I hate eulogising politicians and I acknowledge that Chime is very far from perfect.

cjrane:

Absolutely! I agree 100%. But we must prioritize based on our tiny resources.
I usually remind all that Enugu is about the poorest state in Nigeria in terms of federal allocation. Those that schemed such lopsided allocation against the SE were exactly hoping the place would NEVER develop, but the Igbo ingenuity have made a nonsense of their evil schemes.

Only the private sector investments will eventually grow Enugu and provide additional resources for the development of our rural areas. Chime's infrastructure will help convince the private sector that Enugu is a good location for business.
I believe Enugu must give attention to the rural areas. But must make the Enugu city ready for business investment by private sector, which will eventually boost the tax base of the state and make resources available for development of the far flung villages in the state..
More like saying you have to walk before you run. Based on a less than N100 billion naira budget in a country where some states get N500 billion naira, Enugu must desperately grow its IGR by developing its biggest city for businesses to flourish as well as create new industrial estates at Emene and Agbani area for new industries to set up in the state.

Spyder880, thanks a million for the pictures. Please, spyder, there's a spot opposite IMT gate, at the hill top, facing the liberty estate and also facing IMT, you can get aerial views of enugu. I enjoy those views whenever I pass there. I think your fans here will love it too. cheesy
