DEFINITION OF BASIC CONCEPTS

GOVERNMENT:
There are 3 main definitions of government.they are:
-Government as an Institution of the state. It is the machinery established to state, manage its affairs and administer its functions and duties. It therefore has three organs which are
>The Executive-which is the organ or body that implements the law.
>The Legislature-this body makes the law/law-making.
>The Judiciary- this body interprets the law.

-Government as a Process or the Art of Governing. It is referred as this because it is a body vested with the supreme power of the affairs of the state. Making laws, enforcing it and equally interpreting laws and punishing offenders.

-Government as an Academic Field of Study. It is the study of political institutions in the state, ideas, doctrines about politics. It embraces International Relations, Public Administration, etc.

2. STATE
State is a politically organised body of people inhabiting a defined geographical entity with a legitimate government.
Features Of a State.
>permanence, population, territory, government, sovereignty and recoginition.

3.NATION
A nation is a body of people who feel themselves to be naturally linked together, share common ties, believe that they can live happily together.

4. SOCIETY
Society is the association of human beings. It is a wider term than the state because the state is only concerned with those social relationships that express themselves through government.

5. POWER
Power is the capacity to affect the behavious of others by the threat of sanction.
Forms of Power are: political power, economic power, military power, physical power.

6. AUTHORITY
Authority refers to the formal or legal right to make and enforce laws or policies which the citizens obey.

7. LEGITIMACY
Legitimacy is a political concept which refers to the acceptance and recognition by the citizens of the country. Goverment is said to be legit if it comes to power through constitutional means.

8. SOVEREIGNTY
Sovereignty is the supreme power and authority of the state over the citizens. The idea of sovereignty originated from Jean Bodin,a french philosopher.

9. DEMOCRACY
Democracy originated from ancient Greek. The word 'Demo' in Greek means people and 'Kratia' means government. Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as "government of the people,by the people and for the people."

10. POLITICAL CULTURE
It is the attitude, beliefs and perception of people towards politics.

Structure of government:

There are at least 5 different structures of government such as military, diarchy, parliamentary, constitutional monarchy, and presidential structures.

Military Government

-A military government usually comes to power by the barrel of the gun ie via a military coup. Such a government is called a 'junta'. One of the very first acts of a junta is to suspend portions of civilian constitutions with regard to elected offices.
Nigeria, throughout its history, has recorded eleven coup attempts; with five being abortive or unsuccessful.
The Nigerian juntas usually constituted a Supreme Military Council, Armed Forces Ruling Council, or Provisional Ruling Council which served as the highest lawmaking body in the country. The juntas primarily rule by issuing decrees (laws) to effectively govern the nation. The SMC was presided over by Generals Gowon (1966-1976), Murtala Mohammed (1976), Olusegun Obasanjo (1976-1979), and Muhammadu Buhari (1984-1985).
Military president, Gen Ibrahim Babangida presided over the AFRC from 1985-1993; whilst Generals Abacha and Abdulsalami Abubakar presided over the Provisional Ruling Council from 1993-1998, and 1998-1999 respectively.

i think you should elaborate more.
Re: Nairaland Jamb Tutorial Centre{government Thread} by Nobody: 6:06pm On Nov 29, 2014
Diarchy:

A diarchy is a dual practice of 2 different structures of government simultaneously. Nigeria was virtually a diarchy State between 1990-1993, with a military ruler at the center (Gen Babangida), and elected State governors, Local Government chairmen, and an elected federal legislature named the National Assembly. The Acts of the National Assembly were subject to approval by the AFRC. The basis of the diarchy in Nigeria was the promulgation of the 1989 constitution which ushered in a Third Republic.

Parliamentary:
A parliamentary structure of government is one in which the legislative body exercises both legislative and executive powers. Unlike the Presidential structure, there is no separation of powers in this system.
The Head of Government is elected by fellow lawmakers or holds the position by virtue of being the leader of the majority party, as is done in the United Kingdom. The cabinet consists of members of parliament.
Nigeria practiced the Parliamentary system in the First Republic from October 1960 - January 1966. The government was headed by Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa; with Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe serving as a ceremonial Governor-General (1960-1963), and the country's first and only ceremonial President (1963-1966).
The change in Azikiwe's title came about on October 1 1963, when Nigeria became a Republic. Being a Republic meant that the country was no longer indirectly ruled by a monarchy (the British monarchy), and the Privy Council in London ceased to be Nigeria's highest court.

Right now, I think the bicameral legislature is a drain on Nigeria's finances.
