Let us remember the true origins of this festival.
Since becoming open about being a Satanist and our affiliation with the Church of Satan, my Queen and I are asked each Christmas Season, “What does your family do this time of year while everyone else is celebrating Jesus’ birthday?” The simple answer is, celebrate with family, tasty food, drinks, and presents. You might say we celebrate Christmas, not CHRISTmas. However, I’ll take just a moment to further elaborate as many honestly don’t know and, once again, confuse us with something we’re not.

First, we should begin by noting that Christmas is yet another Pagan rooted holiday that has been bastardized by Christian faith religions to best suit their mythology. Now, the birth of an alleged savior just happens to coincide with the movement in nature, the Winter Solstice. Prior to the character, Jesus, various cultures around the world held festivals revolving around “the Darkest Day of the Year” and welcomed the days gradually growing lighter, the approach of Spring, and rebirth in nature. Yule and Saturnalia are primary examples of this. We, in our home, celebrate in a similar manner, but we’re not limited to that.

Nature is certainly a major part of our festivities, but family is the primary ingredient. I would submit to you that that is most likely the only aspect that we embrace that is similar to the Nazarene holiday that is now slathered with commercialism, disgustingly sappy holiday themed television marathons, encouraged overeating of unhealthy foods for several days, and an absurd amount of consumerism. Let’s face it, how many of us have our earliest childhood Christmas memories of anything other than midnight Santa visits, piles of candy, and PRESENTS? The difference is, as Satanists we don’t deny what these other aspects really are.
