Female students from UNN to UNICAL have confirmed the horrible living conditions in their hostels and that is why when you take one of the poor babes out to a comfortable apartment with luxury bathroom and toilet and water bed, she will just rest in your arms and open her legs wide to enjoy the AC and you can enjoy making love to her. Giving her money is even a bonus. grin

hmn, our main problem in nigeria is that we just cant use our greatest gift (our ability to think) well, some are still blaming gej for this, what a shame. are other better nigerian universities not under the same gej? go to oau for example. to better nigeria is a collective effort of everybody not a gej or a gmb thing. even many of those that shout change all around today are among our leaders in the past 16 yrs. (eg kwakwanso-almost 7yrs gov under pdp and about 3yrs a defence minister; amaechi-8yrs speaker and 6yrs gov under the same pdp; audo ogbe was even pdp chair for some yrs; how about atiku's 8yrs vp under the same pdp; or saraki's 8yrs as gov and 2yrs senator with pdp; and a host of others), dnt let them continue to fool us. lets think and do something to better our life and children.

Why won't he be blamed? During Obasanjo's tenure, the Ministry of Water Resources did a big water project in UNEC. The project could be equated with others executed in some states then.

it took Obasanjo 8years to effect so much misery on all sectors. Other leaders took a couple of years. To destroy is easy and quick but fixing is difficult and takes time. It definite takes more time to fix than to destroy. Fact!!!!

I studied at UNEC (University of Nigeria Enugu Campus) and graduated about 7 years ago, and this was the situation back then. The thing is that most aspects of the Nigerian society are so rotten for so long that they have become the norm. People get used to it and don't complain any more.

The OP didn't visit UNN....even if he did, he only went there to look for bad things to say...there are good things there when you compare UNN with other universities. I presently run my masters there and that's where I did my undergraduate programme. Am not saying because am a super lion. I stayed in the hostel during my undergraduate programme, I have cousins and friends who stil live in the hostels. There is always water, light, security, etc for the students living inside the hostel. UNN is trying..

anyway the new VC is renovating the school. Some hostels have been renovated and equipped with toilets and bathrooms with water in them....you're not allowed to defecate or bathe outside in those units.

I beg no insult oh

I am just reminding you in case you don't know or you have forgotten General Order. Your letter which seeks to investigate what goes wrong in a University when students begin to defaecate in the open in their campus should have been addressed to the school's authority. Your offence is when you jumped normal process of doing things.

Again, out of all tertiary institutions, only UNN has refused to transform. Even if mess litters their lecture rooms I know you will still say it is the fault of the President.

Maybe the University is not receiving or pockets its allocation and other educational grants. Or private investors have deserted the University.

Let me come in here. ... Am currently in my final year at the Enugu Campus. I can authoritatively confirm that this post IS NOT FAR FROM THE TRUTH. The state of infrastructure in Enugu Campus is nothing to write home about. Hostel facilities especially for the Males is more like a pigsty, I had to move off campus after my second year, can you imagine that more SEVEN students are cramped in a room,( this is official, add that to the number of squatters and you get the real picture) with Five small mattresses!! . For the toilet facilities, my Dear don't even go there! There is open defecating at the back of the male hostels(kenneth Dike and Mbonu Ojike) commercial toilets in the school make brisk business( they charge between 40 to 50 naira)
Internet connectivity has improved a bit since Prof Ozumba came into power. Students buy water from water vendors( who are not always steady) as there is no pipe borne water( though the new VC is making plans towards reconnecting the Campus to Enugu water works). Its pitiable. But the joker here is that the quality of learning in the school is up to standard, with the no nonsense lecturers( at least for my own faculty which am very sure of_)
Ps. I am speaking about Enugu campus(UNEC) which am currently a student in.. Heard Nsukka Campus is better of though.

It is pellucid that you have lost touch of what you are describing. No one charges 50 for use of lavatory.
You indite as though no toilet functions, cringe at the thought of having 6 persons in a room as though is unprecedented. It's the same at the NLS Lagos. Again most schools like UNIBEN are worse.
Water ,before recent months, isn't a problem either as water vendors are everywhere.
Futhermore, no one takes his bath outside now. Those that defecate outside now are just reprobates as most toilets function. In fact, in the main, students should be blamed for inability to flush the toilets properly after use.

Keep on deceiving yourself, most toilets function at the ratio of ? 6 rooms multiplied by over 7 persons per toilet with no functional water supply?? Ok how much do the commercial toilets charge?( I said between 40 and 50 naira) don't know why people love being economical with the truth. If the toilets were functioning well as you claimed , why are there commercial toilets even built near the hostels?? Have u visited kenneth Dike's Bathroom recently? grin, i spent 6 years in that hole!, shyting buckets were the order of the day( pronounced like fighting)
chival:
To those saying UNN is not as bad as the OP painted, I say it is a lot worse. I was there a while ago for an event and we stayed in one of the hostels. The next morning, we visited the bathroom and I can't even begin to describe what I saw. Overflowing toilets, female students defecating into custard buckets and hurling in the general direction of the toilets, all these seemed to be the norm. The bathrooms were so filthy that most of the girls elect to take their bath along the corridor leading into the bathroom and when a friend of mine who was mortified at the idea of taking her bath out in the corridor, tried to enter the bathroom, she slipped and fell on the very slimy floor.

It was bad, very bad.

You really get am pfor comprehension problems oh!
Did you not see where the article talked about absence of TAP water on the campus as a major issue. Is it not the constitutional responsibility of the 36 state governors to provide this basic utility all over their state

The other issue is of maintenance rather than building new structure that would be abandoned later. That is a general Nigerian CULTURAL problem. We simply prefer in a very crazy manner, to have BIG and meaningless items rather than have small items that are easily maintained over a long period thus saving us plenty of money to be invested in other needed services, utilities and infrastructure while providing long tenure EMPLOYMENT for cleaners, technicians, engineers, administrators etc.

It is useful to note that we also had good maintenance culture as Ghana still has until early/mid 70s before General Murtala Muhammed upset our civil service structure by sacking "super" Perm. Secs. and massive purge of highly experienced civil servants that were replaced by their quota system etc angry

BTW, it is good to see you grudginly agree to the agricultural transformation. We don't need to argue that in the future.
For the results that you claim you have not seen, why not go to any farming community around you and find out if their yield and INCOME has increased recently or not and what are the responsible factors to see, hear and feel for yourself.
Cheers!

Again, do u wanna tell me that citing of commercial toilets ipso facto buttresses the point that there is no functional toilet in school. It's akin to saying that there is no accomodation in school because commercial hostel can be found in the vicinity.
Re: Shocker: Nigerian University Where Students Defecate In The Open by Obrafour(m): 3:20pm On Dec 27, 2014
Anasko:
Dr Ugoji Ebujo
Widespread anomie prevalent in Nigeria,
occasioned by a virtual dilapidation of the societal
ethical and moral framework, has literally
squelched any social appetite for comparative
sociological analysis of any segment of the
Nigerian society and a corresponding segment of
any foreign country even if that country is
Somalia .

Any such study invariably ends as an exercise in
rendition of woes, lamentations and pity. Our
country once mighty have fallen and is falling.
The decay is systemic and deep-seated and
widespread .

Our political system is heavily infected by
corruption and the educational system is
strangulated by poor funding. But our education
suffers from much more. Teachers groan and
moan, deride politicians and claim moral
indignation but they are equally culpable for the
rot that has beset us.

The university of Ghana and the University of
Nigeria have so much in common besides being
named after their respective countries. They were
both conceived during the colonial era and they
have main campuses located on hills, Legon and
Nsukka . Both have very large student population
of between 35000 and 38000. They have regional
reputations and have produced high quality
graduates who have played great roles in their
societies.

A brief stay in each university last year afforded
me an opportunity to reflect on the two societies
through those institutions . In Legon, it was an
experience of efficiency, culture and aesthetics. All
buildings were painted and all were white and all
had red roofs and all windows black.
Flowers and hedges were manicured and trees
added beauty to the environment. Order was
evident and everything showed agelessness
because the new and the old abided by a laid
down code. The library was quaint but noiseless,
lacked modern books but had good ambience.
The hostels showed they have not lacked care
and the newer ones were quite modern. But
whether old or new , modern or ancient the colour
codes were maintained and all the roofs were red.

The Guest house was sparsely furnished but
functional and had good landscaping . Order and
serenity were evident. The internet wifi system
was good. Nsukka was a different experience. A
multitude of Uncompleted projects littered
everywhere, grasses had Turned to bushes and hedges were untrammeled, free and wild. Many buildings were pale, washed and battered. Hostels were in shambles .

The Enugu campus that houses faculties of Law and Medicine has no pipe borne water. The state of the toilet facilities in Enugu campus can only be imagined.

A chat with some female students of
that campus revealed that students have buckets
for defecating.

They(Nigerian students) grin defecate in the open, along the toilet corridor, many at a time, facing themselves, into buckets and hurl the contents afterward into the toilet Bowls, leaving trails of feces for the cleaners who come when they wish to effect as
much cleaning as they can. The buckets are
subsequently rinsed with scarce water ,which they have to buy , and kept in the rooms until when again needed. Those who cannot stand the
bucket idea defecate into polythene bags and fling them onto a heap behind the hostels.

That heap has survived generations . Its pathetic.
An Alumni exists but the atrocity has persisted.
The Vice chancellors residence is state of the art,
new. The vice chancellor has managed to
ensconce himself in five star comfort while
students are dehumanized . Dont ask me who is
being groomed there. Perhaps pit toilets , since
they cannot have water, may actually restore
some dignity.

Its that bad. Students learning early how to be
wild. The school’s internet network system
functions so abysmally slowly that I could not
use it . Lecturers and students can hardly do
meaningful online researches in that remote
location. A senior lecturer told me she sends
articles to foreign journals using her blackberry
phone. That is the story of Nigeria .

A tradition that all must follow. That entrenched
tradition is the institution. So while projects in
Legon are completed before others are started,
and buildings are repainted yearly, Nsukka is a
picture of haphazardness and planlessness. An
environment of order and good tradition will
culture , nurture and instill order and virtue in
young minds but if you sow disorder , you will
reap disorder.

Often Nigerian academics sneer at the politicians
claiming they are superficial, flimsy, selfish,
shortsighted and wasteful. But Nsukka indicts Our
academics.

And Its not just about funding. And
Nsukka is not alone ,other public universities are
perhaps worse. Nsukka is a reflection of our
society . University of Ghana indicts all of us. And we shamelessly now troop there in droves in
search of better tertiary education for our
children.
