South African company Rippel Effect Systems has landed another contract for IGS-4S day/night sights for the Colombian Army which has now standardised on this item of equipment from Rippel for all its cavalry requirements.

The company expects to complete installation on the whole Colombian Cascavel armoured combat vehicle fleet during next year.

The IGS-4S was launched as a Rippel product two years ago and the technology is licensed from South African firm Vision 24 Observation Systems. The model selected by Colombia is the IGS-4S compact video sighting system, which can be utilised in conjunction with various vehicle-mounted weapons in calibres ranging from 7.62 mm to 125 mm. The system provides the operator with a 24/7 below-armour observation and ranging capability to fire the weapon in all weather conditions, low visibility and darkness.

Rippel Effect said the IGS-4S accommodates multiple sensors tailored to suit user requirements and weapon choice. As a single system it can be pre-programmed with ballistic aiming marks for any weapon and the various types of ammunition for the selected weapon. IGS-4S has the additional ability to range distance to target. It has a laser rangefinder, day camera, uncooled thermal imaging and multi-function screen, which displays aim points and system parameters, as well as controls for the thermal camera. The system is optimised for installation in small vehicles where space is of prime consideration.

The company has developed a video bore sighting device as well as a day/night sight, the VK-RSS-02, that can be used with the secondary weapon on armoured vehicles (such as the 7.62 machine gun on the Cascavel). Both the bore-sight and the VK-RSS-02 integrate seamlessly with the IGS-4S System. The video bore sight makes bore sighting possible by one person from inside the vehicle. The VK-RSS-02 makes it possible to use the secondary weapon from below-armour. The VK-RSS-02 can also be used as hand-held thermal imaging device.

Rippel Effect is known for its series of 40 mm grenade launchers and is focusing on three main products: its new less lethal six-shot multiple grenade launcher RLL37/38 which will be marketed in association with two of the world’s foremost less lethal ammunition manufacturers - Condor of Brazil and ALS of the US; the XRGL40 extended range 40 mm MGL and IGS-4S targeting and sighting system. The XRGL40 can fire low velocity, medium velocity and less lethal ammunition with very low port pressures, including rubber, ball, soft-nose, illuminating and smoke grenades. The 5 kg XRGL40 fires a 220 gram medium velocity projectile to a range of 800 metres, versus 375 metres for low velocity ammunition.

Designed as a true multi-role weapon system, it comes with the GR40 smart multi-velocity sight, which allows the soldier to fire 40 mm ammunition with different ballistic profiles from the same weapon - both 40x46 mm low-velocity and 40x51 mm medium-velocity grenades and also the latest less-lethal rounds.

Rippel Effect started marketing the six shot XRGL40 in 2011/12 and in the last two years has managed to sell the XRGL40 extended range 40mm MGL to eight different countries, the extended range 40mm MGL System is now operational in the Middle East, Latin America and Far East. The XRGL40 is also used in 40 x 51mm extended range ammunition development programs by RDM (South Africa), Diehl BGT Defence (Germany), Energetics Technologies Ltd (UK) and Indumil (Colombia).

Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) has finished building two FCS 5009 Patrol vessels, the first of their type to be built in South Africa. Another vessel of the same class is already in operation with the Cape Verdean Coast Guard.

DSCT said it has prepared the vessels for outfitting with Reutech Sea Rogue weaponry; a system that includes a 20 mm cannon forward of the wheelhouse and two 12.7mm Browning guns fitted respectively port and starboard of the wheelhouse. The Sea Rogue can be operated by a hand controller and has an accurate target-tracking feature. Working with manufacturer Reutech, DSCT can install the weaponry in a matter of days.

“The FCS 5009 is deliverable in two formats. It can be either a fast crew supply ship or a security patrol vessel,” says DSCT Chairman Sam Montsi, explaining that, though the vessels are complete and ready to go, they still possess flexibility. DSCT is able to carry out the final conversion for either option within a matter of weeks. They are also the first in their class to be outfitted with MTU engines that offer a better power to weight ratio for increased speed. “What this shows is the flexibility of Damen vessels,” continued Montsi. “Even though we build for stock, the design of the vessels means they are capable of accommodating a range of different features to match specific requirements.”

“This continues our policy of building in Africa for Africa,” said Friso Visser, Sales Manager Africa for Damen, “and its makes us very proud to see our South African facility maintaining the Damen tradition of building technically advanced vessels to the highest standards. The versatile FCS 5009 Patrol boats have consistently shown themselves to be an ideal solution for patrolling an EEZ [Exclusive Economic Zone]. They have low operational costs, are very fuel efficient, have a competitive purchase price and, crucially, are easy to maintain. Overall, they provide a reasonable Total Cost of Ownership, making them attractive to countries that have a requirement to patrol an EEZ.”

Cape Verde in January 2012 commissioned their 51 metre long Stan Patrol 5009 patrol vessel. The 5009 can carry 24 persons and has four engines (with four propellers), with a total power of 4 324 kW, for a speed of 23 to 35 knots.

Damen is offering the type to the South African Navy to meet its Project Biro requirement for three offshore and three inshore patrol vessels. Armscor issued tenders for the vessels in December 2014, with a closing date of June 30 this year. This will be followed by a period of evaluation before any announcement is made on the successful tenderer or tenderers.

DSCT also sees a big market for anti-piracy vessels, especially in the East African region. There is also huge demand for oil rig protection vessels – Damen has previously sold ten Sea Axe designs for counter-piracy missions in East Africa. These vessels are maintained in Cape Town. The shipyard has also been busy building a variety of vessels, including fisheries patrol vessels, tugs, dredgers, crew suppliers and pilot boats, including two tugs for the South African Navy.

Damen maintains stocks of many of the most popular models of its vessels, enabling the company to supply them to customers on a commercial off-the-shelf basis. DSCT continues to invest in its facilities. The latest addition is Shed 9; its largest production hall yet that will allow it to work on vessels of all types up to 90 metres in length with full protection from the weather, dust and other adverse environmental factors.

“The completion of the FCS 5009 Patrol boats and the opening of Shed 9 with its additional capabilities mark the start of a new phase for Damen Shipyards Cape Town and demonstrate the strength that comes with being a member of one of the world’s leading shipbuilding groups,” DSCT said.

You guys always boast of being the most advanced country in Africa but you dont even have access to internet or is it because you cant read? Namibia has been exporting power to SA for many years. Yet we are distributing over 40% of Namibia's power grid. How amazing is that!!!

I quote " Namibia is highly dependent on electricity imports from South Africa

Chad president himself was a fighter pilot, so how can you belittle a person who was once a pilot to degrade his leadership like that? I don't believe your assertions or else you will have to convince us with a source to prove to us that Chad's MIGs are flown by mercenaries.

Idris Deby pilot of what jet, F-22 Stealth Raptor? What type of aircraft was he trained on? Can he match a Nigerian air marshal and pilots who have flown 1,148 combat sorties in 3 months?

Chad MiG-29 is currently flown by Ukranian mercenaries, don't ask me to post source for you, I found it on google and many people too have been posting it since the MiG purchase, use your own time and brain to find information and stop asking me to spend my own time using laptop to give you common internet information.

Only a fool will fly 3 MiG-29 jets against 300 Roland anti-aircraft missiles that sh.ot down NATO jets and bombs in war, even Idris Deby has publicly announced that Nigeria is militarily superior to Chad the time he was talking about his MiG-29 purchase, Chad knows where death is, if they want to waste their 3 jets, Nigeria is the place to go and get wasted in 5 minutes.

Roland is an outdated SAM and no longer as deadly as it used to be.

Moreover, Nigeria does not test missiles, hence that old grandfather Roland in your picture belong to the US Army. America has written it off long ago due to its weaknesses. Nobody can ever tell you the state of Nigeria's missiles, not even their chief of staff. Lack of testing and maintainance of missiles is rampant in Nigeria.

There is a power that we are distributing to the whole of SADC. We have wires that cross to our neighbouring countries to distribute electricity.

First, you only have 16 Roland launchers - about enough to provide an AA umbrella over a brigade sized formation

How will you defend bridges, airbases, HQ's, fuel dumps, ammo dumps, garages, staging areas, communications hubs as well as 150 000 men with only 16 launchers?

They will simply avoid them, and where they do exist, they will drop cluster munitions and dumb bombs from above the effective range of your rolands

Clown, Chad will wipe the floor with you

Meh, Namibia has a power surplus so we are buying some so that we can perform maintenance on our Generators

I see no problem with this.

If anything it shows how SADAC is the best regional alliance in Africa - our nations have become inexorably linked together

So, America, Italy, Britain and others barely had power to feed their failing grid. Damn!! man I know you are living in a country that does not have power but it is not expected of you to be that ignorant. Go and educate yourself what is rolling blackout. It means SA now produces electricity to many people than before. Over 94% of SA households are now electrified and therefore many power stations are now needed to be build. Atleast Four or Five more power stations or upgrade of existing power stations will do.

my oh my....the coconut has sprout wings!.let me break it down to your level of comprehension:
for example,if you generate about 5000MW in a second along a medium of tension, and you shed about 900MW of electricity at every primary grid,if the point of convalence is located about 500km from the generation point, and there are primary grids{high tension modulators} at every 100km of displacement.you'll end up distributing{contributing} about 1000MW of energy to the central{national} grid!.
do you now understand the physics behind load shedding?,yeah?,splendid!!....
